Ferrata Via Italiana officially closed. However, on Saturday 29.06. there were quite a few "hikers" on it.

Just wondering if you happen to know why it's closed? Regards

Because the fixed protections aren't flawless and Italians haven't managed to fix it yet. It's known what can happen if someone ignores the closure, last year a boy killed himself because of that on Slovenska on Mangart.

On Wednesday I went up Via Italiana to Mangart. The route is officially still closed. Where the cable is torn, a rope has been strung. Even earlier on the route there is one quite loose cable (one of the bolts it's attached to has pulled out). Midway there is a broken bracket. Protection is possible along the entire route anyway. From Mangart I then descended to Loška Koritnica.

Does anyone know how the condition of this route is? Is it still closed, has anyone been around there? Thanks and LP, k.

Is there any snow left by chance on Via Italiana? I know there's still some on the Italian route for sure. I know the route is officially closed, but if there's at least a rope instead of the cable, it shouldn't be an issue.

I admire Bojan A., if the age is right. There aren't many such experienced young hikers. If you ran the mountain run from Kamniška Bistrica to Grintavec last time, we cheered for you too. Bojan, keep going like that!

Since the weather wasn't remotely as bad as the great forecasters predicted a few days ago I headed to Mangart. Perfectly clear morning always pulls one to the heights. Mangart saddle was as I always want it, almost empty. Below MRM I descend partly on the path towards bivouac, partly straight across to the entry of Italian protected route. Sun pleasantly warms, but remnants of sleet from last week haven't melted yet. Mists rise from lakes above, I gear up and go. New cables, new pitons accompany me almost 3/4 of the wall, only upper part has old cables that still serve excellently. Good job, thanks to such people. At exit I turn to Slovenian gully and up to summit which fog slowly covers, no views anymore but I don't mind as I've seen the best already. After short stay on top I descend Italian route to saddle. Meet quite a few on way, but summit in fog, they slept in better since it's Sunday. But mornings are still best in the mornings.

Igor, I really enjoy reading your contributions. It's nice that as an experienced mountaineer you checked this ferrata, it seems now flawless and officially open too. Photos as always excellent, descriptions too. With your knowledge and experience you could write a new mountaineering guide. And also - what does MRM mean?

I'm wondering if this path on Mangart that "triglavski" described can be compared to the path to Jalovec over the notch and Goličica? is it harder or easier than Jalovec!!??

Via Italiana is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than any route in Slovenia.
