Mangart (Via Italiana)

m.marmota, thanks, MRM (Little Rateški Mangart). As Alessio already reported, this route is officially open again, regarding the difficulty Bojan already answered, it's not some long thing though, if you go down from the saddle, it's quite airy in certain places, of course it can't compare to the difficulty of sportier ferratas, since it has lots of natural steps and aids (step pegs, brackets...)

No doubt about that Triglavski. Your reports are excellent and I read them with pleasure.

I'm wondering from when Via italiana is open again and if it's actually repaired at the two fateful spots. greetings and thanks

With Janez we climbed Via Italiana today. The ferrata is really nicely renovated and lots of natural steps and ledges allow nice climbing. It is really airy in some places though. If I compare it to Cijajnik, the latter is technically more demanding but not so airy. It was a bit annoying that the rock was wet. To the top of Mangart we dashed via the Slovenian route, back via the Italian side to the car at Mangart saddle. The weather was suitable today, just clouds didn't allow views.

Enjoy,

Andrej and Janez

I absolutely advise against this route: to dizzy people and hikers who are not at least basically skilled in a bit of climbing. The route is secured but very, very airy, with very few spots on this route where the hiker can rest and have a snack. Mostly it's vertical rock; at the very exit to the saddle it's also crumbly, so you have to be quite careful, a bit more than on other ferratas since it's significantly harder than the others, which my predecessor already emphasized. And to all together HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010, safe steps and safe return to the valley.

I'm interested if there's anything new with the Via Italiana ferrata to Mangart saddle, if it's already repaired, open. Thanks

Most likely they won't repair it, because the local GV have interest to earn as much as possible at the expense of "tourists". The same goes for Via dell Vita.

That last part is of course not true, I haven't seen any GV taking anyone on those paths, and I'm quite often around there.

I got this source from one of the GV, he told me that it's in the interest of Italian GVs, but I didn't claim that it's a "de facto" fact. Undoubtedly, you as a "local" have more up-to-date information on this, Igor.

As far as I know, the problems are elsewhere, local markacists are not allowed to do such tasks, meaning repairing secured paths, that's actually the competence of GV, there are always many damages and certain repairs come when they come, sometimes they tackle things comprehensively, meaning they repair a longer section. Otherwise, Alessio can give concrete explanations, who is really the most at home there, as he lives almost at the starting point.

hi. I'm interested if maybe someone knows how badly damaged the ferrata on Vevnica is? some say you can't pass, others say you can... thanks for the answer

As far as I know, the Alpine Association of Slovenia will no longer repair Via Italia on Mangart; it was also published in Planinski vestnik, so it was said at the last meeting. Lately it's already a problem for domestic ferratas how much they will still be repaired and renewed since crisis is felt here too in lack of money and also people, because if markacists aren't even paid for food nobody will work anymore. Via Italiana is in Italy, so PZS has nothing to do with this path.

When (I hope) GV FJK - G.A. FVG officially notify me that they have repaired "via ferrata italiana", I'll immediately post on the forum; I did what I could, right after the notice that I got via acquaintance I.Zlodej (thanks again for the info) I notified CAI FVG (PD FJK) and many others and put warning signs on our and your side, what to say? hope it'll be OK soon.
