Mangart (Via Italiana)

Print
MANGRT19. 08. 2013 22:16:04
Due to the cycling race on Mangart this time I decide for the path from Klanška lakes. Path without features, up Via Italiana + Slovenian, down Italian + Via Italiana.
Since I was eyeing the pathless area under the ferrata in the morning already, my heart didn't give me peace on the return. After the exit I go directly down the ugly scree until steep walls stop me. Two descents follow and I reach the snow tunnel which persists despite the heat.
From here back to the trail and towards the valley.
Morning view from the forest.1

Smooth walls.3
Pure beauty of mountains.4
Cold spring below the bivouac comes in handy.5
Second part my favorite because...6
it is airy and...7
the soul enjoys on its own8
before left traverse I overtake them9
if you have something, give me a little10
that I will check out11
that scree will be my path12
heroes were not lacking on return13
soon it will be cut off14
view back15
before the abyss I look for a crack and...16
I run into the predecessor17
first 16 meters of descent18
next 20 meters of descent19
it is huge20
walking through it is like a car wash - water flows everywhere21
and I'm on the other side22
23
they also enjoy the embrace of the mountains24

Today from saddle to bivouac then along Via Italiana back to saddle, along Slovenian to top and descent along Italian. On ferrata two pitons holding cable pulled out (one already completely out, the other you can pull too). These are pitons exactly one after another, so extra caution needed. Don't want to imagine how it would be falling on this section. Otherwise super path and gorgeous day. Just mists obscured view from top.

Youth Day was ideal for Mangart loop.
In dark start at Strmec past alpine pasture to saddle. Here short break and path check. Go through chimney - midway clouds come and exit direct into sun. Return via Italian to Via Italiana ferrata entrance where I spot two groups of hikers. Here change gear and surprises begin. Midway big snowfield, passage through hole only on belly, entry part deep under snow. From here slide past bivouac which snow didn't spare. Slowly snow lessens but replaced by sand and mud. At end vertical descent on scree and quick steps to lake where transport home waits.nasmeh

Like this it snowed it in, tore the cable and shifted it.
This is what winter does1

Via Italiana dry, protections flawless, on the "Slovenian" you cross two snowfields in the upper part above the "shoulder", ice axe recommended. On descent via Italian three small snowfields passable without issues.

No report on Via Italiana ferrata for some time. This weekend processions swarmed the Slovenian and Italian paths to Mangart, the ferrata stood empty zmeden. On it two steel cables torn (status 31 July 2016), but replaced with fixed rope. The ferrata therefore is not any harder than usual.

Some confuse the Italian path to Mangart with ferrata Via Italiana or even ferrata Via de la Vita. Of course these are not the same paths velik nasmeh.

Ferrata Via Italiana was during cold relations with neighbors in former Yugo the only Italian approach to Mangart saddle, or a bit above it. Italian path to Mangart is basically its Šodrovo continuation, by which neighbors could reach the top on their side of the border. Slovenes for the same reasons made the Slovenian to Mangart.

Today luckily we can use all three paths to good advantage nasmeh

The via ferrata is excellently secured12
Somewhere we advance through chimneys, elsewhere through exposed sections13

To Mangart via Via Italiana, I hadn't been yet and it was so interesting that it wasn't the last time. Just because of the foggy weather in the lower part, it needs to be repeated. Otherwise the path is completely dry from the Slovenian side, on the Italian side you cross three snowfields, possible without winter gear. At the top fantastic weather

So is the road to Mangart Saddle normally drivable (was the landslide cleared then)? Are the current snowfields safely passable without winter gear?

Due to the active landslide, the road is and will be closed until possible remediation or the building of a new road route.

OK, Janez, I'll ask differently - is the road normally drivable to the saddle by breaking traffic rules?

Drivable with a single-track vehicle.

Verified on site: Cars are cheerfully driving on the road, as there is no physical barrier on it.

I admit: I also parked at the saddle last year and the year before when we climbed Mangart with my better half. If there's a little space for sheet metal. nasmeh
