Poldašnja Peak - Jof di Miezegnot

Print
peter28. 05. 2011 18:26:56
Yesterday 7.5.2011 we headed to Poldašnja Peak.
Despite not such an early hour, we were the first in Zajzera in the morning. Past the Grego hut we quickly reached the Rudni vrh saddle. There we branched off towards Poldašnja Peak.
To the Gemona shelter the path runs through the forest. The whole way we were accompanied by the calling of woodpeckers. The path is completely dry.
Above the shelter we spotted the summit of Poldašnja Peak. Despite the assessment that it's a very easy approach, we were surprised a few dozen meters below the summit by the extremely crumbly rock. We felt like walking on scree. It's a short section that crosses a small gully.
The summit is very panoramic. In the mountains we're not used to hearing traffic, which we can't avoid on this peak. The Canal Valley to the north is of course very
busy.
Our gaze kept drifting to the bold walls of Montaža, Viša and Naboisa.
Descent by the same path.

Has anyone been to Poldašnja Peak recently from Valbruna via Strehica or Ravna?

What's the path like and what are the conditions? Apparently an avalanche took part of the path and it's apparently very crumbly overall? What about those gullies in the description? Are they difficult? Exposed?

Thanks for the reply!

Yesterday I went to Poldašnja Peak from Valbruna via Stehica. The name is supposedly correctly Poldnašnja Peak which might make more sense since we say 'noon', not 'polde'. nasmeh If the mountain were in Slovenia and more known, we'd argue about it like Mangart-Mangrt, Prisojnik-Prisank and such, but there aren't so many debates about this name.

First I ride the bike to Zajzera and hide it in the bushes behind some fenced area before the bridge over the now dry streambed. Probably some old abandoned barracks. Then I ride back to Valbruna where I park halfway between the junction for Zajzera and the starting point.

When I reach the forest path I start ascending towards the saddle Za vrhom (Sella Nebria). Legend has it Napoleon rode over it... at least that's what they say. nasmeh From the top of the saddle (marker at the base of the power line) I detour to the nearby Podgorski vrh (Monte Nebria). The path goes through a short tunnel. Claustrophobics or those wanting a loop can go to Monte Nebria right after starting the forest path from Valbruna (signpost). Both paths reach the top. As soon as we leave the gravel road (signpost to the peak even in Slovenian) a wire helps with a slightly slippery short descent then we climb again and have about 15 min to the summit. View of Canal Valley (Ukve, Valbruna), Poldašnja Peak already visible but still in clouds that were slowly clearing in the morning.

Well, when I return to the saddle the sun has come out. I continue to Planina Strehica, over the torrent, then the steepest part of the path (ignoring the summit gullies) in switchbacks to the clearing with a nice hut. At Strehica (Malga Strechizza - Italians have great talent for Italianizing authentic Slovenian names) I rest a bit then head on and after about 20 min reach the junction for Poldašnja Peak where the path from Planina Ravna joins, which is actually around the corner from there. I take advantage and go see the famous Zitta chapel - dedicated to the last Austrian empress. There should have been an old logbook with entries from 1969 onwards but apparently they replaced it (probably during the chapel renovation in 2007, since entries from then are in the new book).

From the chapel where I rest and snack I head back to the junction and turn towards Poldašnja Peak. Initially the path goes through forest then opens up and there the close view of the Peak opens. Clouds around it visible from Strehica have dispersed. On a somewhat crumbly and slippery path I reach the saddle where the view to Viš and Montaž opens. To the left along the path Višarije with Stone Hunter are visible all the time.

The path then drops a bit then those gullies start, which according to the description on these pages are demanding but aren't any big deal (maybe the last one before the final ridge and even that has well-trodden steps of predecessors which I followed). The path is indeed crumbly, slippery and slightly exposed in places but what the description author meant by 'demanding' path remains his secret... zmeden

The summit ridge is then a bit tricky but only orientationally due to faded markers because of which I stray a bit into scree where I scramble, traverse, climb... and get back to the markers which take me past another bunker (with which the mountain is dotted) to the summit. And yes, on the summit due to the exposed position (as predecessor wrote) you really hear traffic from Canal Valley. nasmeh View: everything already seen from the path plus Karnic Alps e.g. Ojstrnik and even Tromeja, well Mangart and around our Julijci remain in clouds.

I descend the path which is no less demanding in the summit ridge although marked as easy on this portal. Somewhat steep, crumbly, and you even have to climb a about 5-6 m rock step which isn't usual for easy paths. When I reach the normal path it's only another 5-10 min to Bivak Gemona. There branches the collapsed and closed path to Pipar and Dve špici. Deadly dangerous for us mortals, for hardened fighters of hardest paths, vias ferratas and maybe something alpinistic perhaps not. And if anyone risks (at own responsibility) the path is apparently in the range of very demanding pathless terrain, helmet mandatory because apparently everything flies around!

I go towards Zajzera to Somdogna on a nice forest path. Well at Somdogna Mangart nicely reveals itself, unfortunately at that altitude only it sticks out from behind nearby mountains, well if the clouds had cleared when I was higher I'd see more (probably whole Ponc ridge and Jalovec and more).

At Rif Grego beer fits again then on a bit winding gravel path to Zajzera and by bike back to Valbruna and home. Another nice trip done.

Good thing the day isn't always known by the morningjezik, as today's repeat didn't promise... started in Ovčji vasi and already puffing on the macadam road through the forest (prohibited for traffic, fine 82 euros), where the path from the road after a good half hour turns to a steep forest trail and soon I was at planina Ravna. A little higher I stop at the Zita chapel and viewpoint, then continue through the dark spruce forest to my today's goal. Since I like to do circular tours if possible and even if it means walking on an asphalt road, I descend to Zajzera valley... it was worth itnasmeh. Descent from the top crumbly, sometimes the path is almost gone as it was washed away, but it goes. I stop at the Gemona bivouac and sit with eyes glued to the walls and peaks of both neighboring giants, which seem as if on the palmnasmeh. I continue to planina Rudni vrh and on past koča Grego, to Zajzera valley. Here follows the last stop on the meadow with wonderful views, then a little more "pounding" to the car (hmmm, bike would be a super choice today, but what when I'm not rozka for nothing, hehe)
I liked the path, it is varied, from soft forest trail together with autumn colors, to path that was washed away or very crumbly, markings on the ascent higher than the planina already poorly visible, path of ascent and descent a bit crumbly, otherwise all ok, quite a lot of war remains, caverns, bunkers, trenches, ruins,... weather from morning cloudiness, strong wind on top, to heat and sunshine... had all, views again fairy-tale...

Last time I noted that the nicest is yet to come, and it came too fast. I drive to Zajzero, road plowed to barracks, car with higher undercarriage reaches chapel too. Snow good 20 cm, no tracks, through forest goes quite well, here and there something falls from trees, otherwise nothing special. At Grego hut snow already around half meter, continue to Rudni vrh saddle and further to pasture. Snow dry and pleasure to break trail. To bivouac no trouble, just photo moments so many that could shoot nonstop. At bivouac short rest, then to summit. In drifts snow well over knees, but goes. Short stop on summit, then back on own track. Weekend will be nice, track done, so tour more than recommend, before 9 a.m. almost no sense because cold, gaiters mandatory, poles with sufficiently large baskets recommended.

"Come on!" I tell myself, stopping before the road barrier at the start of Rabelj Lake. The road is closed to all traffic, to Nevejsko Saddle not from this side (at all) and Pecol and Strma Peč are out. I turn around, first km drive by the rules, because my brain is running "recalculating" program which quickly spits out three alternatives. Good that I've been in these parts before. One variant out because shady (today want sunshine), second promised to someone, so go where trampledvelik nasmeh. To Poldašnja Špica, classic, this year not yet. Nothing special to add, except of course no sign of snow, not even traces, and summit part yearly more collapsed, descent slightly uncomfortable, gully on return (returned under summit) requires quite some care, last few meters completely collapsedeek. So climbed next to gully few m back up to marked path, seemed nothing holds at all. Well, in the end it does. Morning -5, but day pleasantly warm, no wind, views let pics tell.
This view always cheers me up, the morning one especially. Montage1

Fortress on the top. It has a good position, you can see something from it.10
Mildly put, ugly. You know, step by step, and you climb it.11
This is how the summit looks from the ridge, with ants on it. 12
View of the remains, the bivouac is in excellent condition. At this point I collapsed. No, wrong. I was sunbathing :)13
Not this one, but it must not be missing. Beauty Viš, with buddy Nabojs14

Today we got up early and headed to Zajzera. Left the car at the last parking by the chapel, road there well drivable, but maybe conditions now different, as afternoon snowed quite a bit when returning home. Trail to Grego still quite icy, easier straight through the forest. Hut closed. Then trail visibly better, well trodden, base hard but not icy. From Gemona bivouac onward caution needed. Two ahead told us can go up without crampons and yes it is so, but with caution. You walk on rocks, ice and snow. At one o'clock weather conditions worsened visibly, most hills were in gray clouds and it started snowing stronger. Nice anyway and especially glad finally went to this peak, because twice already in these parts but always one obstacle present.

Because it's clouding over, we head straight to the summit.6
Caution is needed here, a mixture of rocks, ice and snow.7

A necessary entry.9

No sign of the terrible front, suitable weather, so I drive to Zajzera. Park at the old barracks, then straight behind the barracks up into the forest to find some old path. From the start it went well, then I realize it won't be anything, bushes appear, need to cross two loose gullies and on the other side up into the forest and up the nice forested ridge. At times it seems to me that I'm walking on some very old trail, I reach a clearing where once stood a small wooden hut, now there are only remnants of decayed wood. I go on, on the beeches I find some red blotches, higher up yellow dots, the little path leads west, soon I hit a landslide, the path ahead impassable, go a bit higher, bushes more and more, with difficulty push through to a gully, continue up it, turn right again and off-trail to the SE ridge, where at every step remnants of the front line. I join the path coming up from Planina Ravna and up it to the summit. Since it's windy, quickly leave the summit and descend to Bivacco Gemona, then to Planina Rudni vrh and past Koča Grego back to Zajzera. Nice loop, hard to repeat.

Yesterday idyllic day, perfect for idyllic hike with already somewhat kitschy views, among which north face of Montaž stands out especially. We start at last parking in Zajzera, then past Koča Grego, Jezerca and Rudni vrh to Poldašnja špica (or maybe someone knows how to pronounce Jof di Miezegnot Italian-style). Path in last part under summit quite eroded, steep and very crumbly. Maybe info that path 649 from Bivacco Gemona to Piparj is closed.

Above Zajzera, blue showed here and there. The path to Koča Grego is snowy, but trampled. Further to the Rudni vrh saddle, someone drove with motor sleds; on the planina, fog rising from Dunje gore, but the Krniška glaviica peak still visible. I go across the planina, track more and more sparse, higher into fog, but it didn't bother me. At the bivouac, I pause for a moment, then to the summit. The edge is windblown, not much snow in the rocky part. I stop at the cross when it clears, then quickly back down.
When it's cloudy and foggy for days it's nice to see a blue patch of sky1
