With my wife we wandered yesterday among other things also on the slopes of Poldašnja Peak.
Even in summer it's interesting on this panoramic summit, on the mountain sadly dotted with memories of the tragic fates of those who were sent up there...
Already above the saddle nice view to Mangart and Jalovec.1
Herd on the path.2
You can see who is the boss.3
At such signs we remember all those to whom it was not as nice as to us who come on excursions.4
At the remains of military objects there is a bivouac which they are now renovating.5
Beautiful view the whole time on the highest in the Western Julians.6
View towards Višarje and our Julians.7
Bunker below the summit.8
Towards Piparju, Dvema Špicama, the Dolomites and down towards Kanalska dolina.9

Although I did the tour last Thursday, I think the path hasn't changed much despite today's weather front passage. From Zajzera to summit no peculiarities, just that collapsed part below summit annoying, downhill understandably even more. Collapsed part well marked so you know direction of easiest, can choose between firmer ground left edge and scree in middle and right. But collapse relatively short, so with some experience no problem. No sheep and goats on summit, their ... quite a lot, so best sit on some rock. No cheese at pasture above Rudni vrh, so after tour had to go to co-op in Ukve nasmeh

Nice tour, good for these hot days as it was pleasantly cool up to Bivak Gemona.

In the afternoon I drive to Zajzera and up towards Poldašnja Peak. Deciduous trees in true autumn colors, larches slowly turning color. Below the summit I went off-trail because that western path is like a quarry. Returning there back and it's not easy at all. Mainly whoever heads up be careful with holds.

ON THE OLD ABANDONED MILITARY PATH

Sunday 1.7.2018 at 17:00 I park the car in Ovčja vas and start walking on the gravel road towards the end of Zajzera valley. At Rifugio Montasio I cross the asphalt and turn right up the gravel road that takes me behind the barracks to the torrent. On the other side is the old Aqueduct, here starts the old military path that some have already written about in this forum. The path is abandoned, no one uses it anymore. With the help of Italian Tabacco map, altimeter and some logic the little path is quickly found and no crawling in gullies needed, scree not a problem. The path first takes me to some stone pillar, didn't understand if monument or old border stone. Higher I reach ruins of barracks and shelters dug into rock. At every step I see war remains, still full Italian cartridges, bomb fragments, wires and such. In company of chamois I reach the ridge where the path is now very visible, below me on left is that big gully but no need to descend into it, along the upper part the path at same height brings me a bit above Bivacco Gemona.
Overnight in bivouac, second day along marked path to summit and then northern path over Planina Ravna back to car in Ovčja vas.

Weather forecast again promised this year's usual summer shower. Accordingly we chose a closer goal and took full rain gear, almost with a dryer. After some initial wet moments we were rewarded for courage and got excellent weather for the hike nasmeh.

So … to Poldašnja Peak we went via less known direct access from Valbruna. No, not the usual one past Grego hut, but path 606. Its start is next to the village on the road to Zajzera and shares sign with path 607. At first glance somewhat hidden signpost is near the arranged parking.

Path has some initial km of pleasant gentle gravel for warm-up. Can go all along road or shorten turns via some marked overgrown shortcuts. Both variants lead to Planina Ravne (Malga Rauna). There next to alpine dairy is quite untidy bivouac, just above the plain interesting chapel with Austro-Hungarian patriotic inscription on the altar.

Continuation found above chapel. From here to saddle just below summit path 606 is nice, scenic and comfortable, only here and there worse preserved. No excessive exposure anywhere. Like most local paths this one originates from WW1 and we had quite some fun prying remains from those times. Final ascent on scree but short and easy. About views from excellent viewpoint no need to talk. Sees far, far nasmeh. Recommend.

The morning start was not promising, but Italian meteorologists rarely err1
Our path 606 shares the markings to the Ravne pasture with path 6072
The rain stopped after ten minutes and there was no more of it on the entire path3

In this section of the path there is more sandy material, but no exposure.27
With a little caution, there are no difficulties.28

Exploring war remains always goes well for us and this time was no different :)30

Road to last parking completely dry and clear. Path to Grego brothers hut only here and there a bit icy - caution especially on descent, snow starts at the flat where hut is and then practically everywhere on path except in that collapsed gully just below summit. There they (maybe this year?) strung three steel cables, which in such neither one thing nor the other conditions provide solid help. Weather spoiled a bit on return, during short stop in Ovčja vas it started snowing quite heavily on us.

On Sunday sixteen female and male hikers, most first time to Poldašnja Peak. From Rateče to Tarvisio, turn towards Ovčja vas and park in Zajzera valley, finally first time here... what wonderful views, weather gorgeous. Start at 1,000m, ahead 1,300m ascent, path nicely laid and we overcome meters moderately. After one hour at Grego hut, path through forest further to Rudni vrh saddle. Then ascent to Bivacco Gemona. Follows last part, more demanding last half hour, eased by new cables but caution not superfluous. All from our group happy at summit, admire nearby and distant peaks... all the way to Grossglockner, nearby Montaž, Viš, Strma peč, Visarje, Kamniti lovec, Mangart, Jalovec... Guides and assistants help on descent, all happy with such tour.

Peaks above Rudni vrh (Sella Sompdogna) between Zajzera and Dunja

If you go to the ridge from Poldašnja Peak over Piparji to Dve špici from Zajzera via Rudni vrh, it's quite a long day tour, in summer choose cooler day otherwise too hot on south slopes. More practical and easier trip is via Rudni vrh to connect opposite Poldašnja Peak and Krniška glavica, or from start at two bridges (cca 2km below road summit) say independently visit Dve špici and Veliki Pipar.

But since Piparji interested me, I made a mix of that, mainly to see how they renovated eastern approach /more or less now via ferrata/ to Veliki Pipar. Answer: excellent, cables new, thicker, markings and ascent directions well marked, avoided gully, scree and quarry, ascent goes more to left looking up. Path well secured but for descent still not recommend, too much scree and consequent slip opportunities. Veliki Pipar has grassy summit and also from west (from Dve špici) nice access, much trickier is its neighboring but slightly lower northern brother, of course unmarked but summit has cross. Everywhere on path and these peaks still find bunker and observation post remains from WWI and some placed there really like eagle nests, hmm wonder how good hikers those soldiers were back then.

Idea of Piparji ridge finally abandoned, looks too hard although true respect never comes from fear.

Some news from this part of Julijci …

Zajzera valley now definitively connected to Rudni vrh saddle with quite wide road. What its status will be I couldn't find out, but EU co-finances it. Also access to Grego hut for hikers slightly changed for this reason, well marked and arranged. Hut open, lots of visitors.

Planina Somdogna above Rudni vrh saddle alive this year, noticeable in abundance of sheep around Bivacco Gemona. They even make it to summit, so need to be twice careful velik nasmeh. Bivouac was open this time, but they were doing some work around it. Already twice in a row I hit locked door.

Collapsed gully in final approach more collapsed every year, recently renovated protections all in good condition. That Poldašnja Peak is wonderful viewpoint no need to repeat nasmeh. Recommend.
Parking lot in Zajzera early in the morning. There were some Czechs and Poles, most were Italians1

Poldašnja Peak is a rewarding goal in winter, not entirely easy though. Especially on the summit section current conditions can turn many back. In that case the Bat. Alpini Gemona shelter below the summit is an excellent substitute and great viewpoint nasmeh.

And what are the current conditions …. the marked path from Zajzera to Grego hut is mostly under snow, in places icy too. Many people therefore prefer the new road. It's longer, but gentler and more comfortable. From the hut to Rudni vrh saddle it's also well trodden. From there towards the shelter the track is no longer so comfortable, but in the morning it's firm and holds without problem. From the shelter to the summit conditions can change quickly. On the ridge mostly wind-blown snow, we hit a steep untouched drift at the narrowest passage. Continuation is easier. Follows partly rocky, partly snowy section with cables to the summit ridge. This is mix of drifts and hard snow all the way to the top. Return was via same variant. Surprisingly conditions to the parking lot didn't change much.
Parking at the last parking lot in Zajzera1
The frost bites and some sun is very welcome2
The hut is still firmly shuttered and sleeping its winter sleep3
Ahead the trodden path is no longer as firm as up to the hut4

We cross the exposed passage and continue ...17
