@lencka we needed good 8 hours for this trail with breaks. We started at 6:45 in Bohinjska Bistrica and were back exactly at 15:00.

Yesterday on Rodica and Črna prst from Orlove glave. I comfortably reached the starting point by Vogel gondola cable car and then Orlove glave chairlift. That way more strength remained for crossing the summits and descent to Bohinjska Bistrica past Orožnova koča. The trail can be quite demanding in scorching heat despite the cable car comfort, but yesterday's temperature was just right for hiking.
The trail from Rodica to Črna prst was very picturesque despite average views, but at some exposed spots it required quite some caution, so the step wasn't always the easiest. The descent to the valley due to mostly slippery terrain was more or less tormenting.
Above the lake the morning fog was already rising, Triglav was still visible, although the mists soon thickened into clouds1

Today on Črna prst and Rodica. Start at 5.00 at Dom dr. Mencingerja. To Črna prst 1.5 hours, to Rodica another 2 hours. Back it went a bit faster nasmeh
Views were solid despite some fog, but by 12 it got quite warm. The ridge trail is very scenic and in dry conditions not too technically demanding.

To Rodica 2 hours, Rodica-Črna prst 3 hours with one longer break and waiting for sun for photos. From Črna prst to Bohinjska Bistrica center another good 2.5 hours with just a few minute breaks for knee relief.
Down it was very slippery and although downhill, it's always the most demanding part for me, for which I've never needed less than 2.5 hours.
Total around 8 hours walking, with breaks 9. In severe heat the trail easily extends by another hour.

Anyway, hiking time in mountains is very relative.
Everyone has their own, I'm among the slower ones.

After a month, on Friday 16.8.2013, I hiked the trail also in the opposite direction. Started at 6.50 in Podbrdo, finished at 16.35 in Ribčev Laz. No time left for swimming in Lake Bohinj because I had to catch the bus and then train. There wasn't much rest on the way either.

The trail from village Trtnik to Kalarsko sedlo is adorned with numerous new giant cairns. The path from Črna prst to Rodica requires a lot of caution also in the opposite direction. Especially at the beginning when descending towards sedlo Vrata, and at the end of the trail between Suha Rodica and Rodica.
Beautiful day, great views and due to gentle breeze just right warm for pleasant hiking. But couldn't avoid tourists in sandals whom I met between Rodica and Raskovec.

Ski hotel-Rodica-Črna prst-Bohinjska Bistrica. From Šija to Rodica the path is completely overgrown on two short sections. The further crossing to Črna prst due to grassy slopes to the south side really requires concentration as mentioned several times on this side, unfortunately several accidents have already happened on the path. Steel cables are sparingly placed. Otherwise the path is very beautiful, a real botanical treasure, the quantity of gentians surprised me the most, almost comparable to narcissus on Golica mežikanje Worth observing nature, enjoying 100% and forgetting time. We will definitely return nasmeh

I don't know what the path from Šija to Rodica looks like because two years ago I crossed from Planina Suha to Rodica and on. From Rodica to Črna prst the path didn't seem too demanding to me. Last year I did crossing from Šija via Vogel to Spodnja Komna so I skipped exactly the part Becar mentions as demanding.

Janez, the path hides completely under scree in places but it's maybe 20 m sections. In good weather you see path continuation after mentioned sections so passage not problematic. In thick fog probably search direction a bit. Didn't mention due to impassability but as curiosity first time marked path so overgrown. Regards

Branko, I know you go via Grdi graben to Dolce too... The path reminded me a lot of Grdi graben. No serious climbs but narrow path above very steep slopes in places smooth slabs. Path marked on maps as partially demanding agree with rating. For family outing with kids would choose something else mežikanje

Late post of Saturday (19.7.14) hike Orlove glave - Rodica - Črna prst - Podbrdo.

At Vogel ski slope I hesitated a bit whether to head to Vogel or Rodica. Expecting blooming pastures went to Rodica and was somewhat disappointed from the start as to Rodica it was not so fragrant as expected. Instead of colorful flowers sadly bleating sheep and crowds of hikers. Real atmosphere caught only around Matajurski vrh when traffic thinned and luxuriant blooming slopes lured to panoramic peak. Worth to climb and despite clouds embrace whole path from Rodica to Črna prst. Continued over soft cushioned Poljanski vrh and joined mountain path at saddle with Konjski vrh.
Path from Rodica to Črna prst worse at some critical spots than last year. Most tormenting descent to Vrata saddle: legs tired terrain more demanding. From Črna prst descended to Podbrdo this time and home by train. Ankle held knees soon disintegrated.

Scree Becar describes likely on ridge descending from Zad. Suhe to saddle Čez Suho. Many hikers miss marked mountain path dropping under scree and continue on scree overgrown ridge. Myself first time this way as marked path easily overlooked. Otherwise scree quite low passage not too hindered. Much worse last year and year before towards Komna or worse to planina Govnjač. There sank into scree barely pushed through.

SuzanaM - is it possible to get lost on that part you describe? I would do the following route: BB - train Podbrdo - CP - Rodica - Orlove glave - Vogel - Zlatorog gondola - Bus BB

Beautiful pictures. Picture 60 - pity, because it lies like that, as it is part of our history after all.
@janez.novak, you can get lost, especially dangerous in fog around Suha.
If you go to Vogel as well, you'll just prolong the route.

SuzanaM beautiful pictures! Where did you find the alpine stone men. I know they are planted at that marker when you descend from the saddle below Crna Prst towards Podbrdo - not a natural habitat. I'll go there around August 15th from Planina Suha for the Rodica-Crna Prst traverse. Last year the path didn't seem too demanding to me - my rating.

SuzanaM28. 07. 2014 09:28:05
Janez, the path is well marked, so you can't get lost with normal visibility.
In fog all paths are problematic. Once there was such thick fog already at Orlovi Glave that after a few steps I almost got lost, even though I had hiked the path many times before. Although I reached the saddle below Šija, I turned back and returned a couple of days later when the views were limitless.

Velkavrh, the alpine stone man is indeed at the monument and it has grown luxuriantly this year.
The difficulty of the path is perceived differently by everyone. For me, on a few shorter sections from Rodica to Crna Prst, it wasn't pleasant underfoot at all. Otherwise, most of the path is easy. Given all the discussions about difficulty/easiness, I photographed those sections and posted them, so everyone can form their own opinion keeping in mind that photos don't show the true steepness.

Thanks everyone for the praise.
