Rombon

If you had looked back a bit, you would have quickly found out about the path; otherwise, be more precise and say which path interests you. Current conditions: at 17:33 there is sun on the top, no snow; during the day the top was in fog.

Triglavski has a very accurate weather forecast. Today in the Julians, it was quite cloudy and foggy during the day, only late in the afternoon did the sun peek out.

This year I plan to visit Rombon quite soon. Since I read it's best in spring and autumn because in summer it's too hot, I'm wondering if a visit around the first of May is already possible and which of the three paths is the least demanding, because at the start of the season an easier path suits me better. Nice greetings to all and a successful start of the new mountaineering season to everyone togethermežikanje

In summer it's usually too hot in the valley, not at all on Rombon. But joke aside. Around 1 May at least the summit part of Rombon will still be in snow, but that's no obstacle for the ascent with the necessary gear. There's no really easy path to it, not even the one from Kanin because it's long. Maybe it would still be the easiest from Kluže, since on this path you can avoid the gully in Naklo, which is usually snowy until the beginning of summer. Of course the path from Zavrzelno is also possible, below Čukla we go right to Krljišče, and then off-path join the path that comes from Kluže. There's also the current path to the summit through Dolič or along the ridge right above Čukla. Anyway, the gorniki have been hiking since the new year, but the mountaineering season really starts slowly. LP

Igor, excellently written. nasmeh

Yes, both of you wrote nicely, especially thanks to Igor for the detailed Rombon description. True, as you said, planinska is just starting, but never say never; maybe we too will become gorniki someday if we are persistent, we don't lack will and courage. LPmežikanje

This is how Rombon (Veliki vrh) looked today from the Škrbina under Grdi Vršič.

In June 12th and 13th we're going to Rombon, will there be snow problem then? Is it too early for ascent to Rombon?

Murglovc22. 04. 2010 12:07:49
If you go from fortress Kluže there shouldn't be major snow problems. But if from Bovec or Zavrzelno, there will probably still be snow in the gully below Rombon summit. For ascent from Zavrzelno recommend ice axe and crampons.

From Kluže snow starts around 1400 meters. Otherwise no problems.

How much snow is there approximately? Is it sensible or necessary to have snowshoes somewhere?
like
viharnik23. 04. 2010 13:59:15
For ascents, especially from southern sides, snowshoes are now necessary. During the day the top 10-15 cm snow softens, below somewhat harder snow. When walking the top layer practically slides off under feet, below still slippery. Snowshoes allow not reaching slippery bottom layer. Without snowshoes sink in quite a bit already. Somewhat better snow base above 1800 m.

Can anyone tell me how much snow is still on the path from Bovec up?

Towards Čuklo there are still some snow patches and also in the gully through Naklo, but no difficulties.

We were there yesterday. Start and end in Kljuže. Nice but quite hot hike. Not many of us on the top.
Like many before me I also recommend early start in these summer days. Otherwise it applies to every hike, right?

best
