Does anyone have a map of the three Cimes handy... I would be very grateful if someone scanned it and put it on this page. Thanks.

Thursday, 22.8.2013, was the day for a family trip to the Dolomites and Tre Cime (Tre Cime di Lavaredo).
We drove to the parking lot at Rifugio Auronzo past Vidm and Tolmezza, where the highway ends, then through countless hairpin turns past Forni di Sopra and over the pass Passo della Mauria to Auronzo di Cadore and Misurina. Toll for the 7 km long panoramic road to Rifugio Auronzo or parking fee, as indicated on signs, was 22.00 EUR for a passenger car.

From Rifugio Auronzo we set off along the promenade, crowded with hikers, to Rifugio Lavaredo and further across scree to the ridge Forcella Lavaredo. Here the promenade turns down, but we continued on a narrower and less crowded path crossing the slopes under Monte Paterno to Rifugio Locatelli. From there we climbed past the little church towards Torre di Toblin to the saddle and then left to the summit of Sasso di Sesto. Despite easy access, the summit was little visited and the right place for rest with ever better views.
From the summit we continued on the path that gently descends across scree under Torre di Toblin, then on a wider trail under Sasso di Sesto to Rifugio Locatelli.
We continued in procession along the circular path around the Tre Cime. It first descends, then ascends under the north slopes of Tre Cime across the Longa pasture to the saddle Forcella Col di Mezzo and on to Rifugio Auronzo.

We finished the trip in Cortina d'Ampezzo. We drove home towards Belluno, where we joined the highway to Venice and then at Conegliano turned to Portogruaro and further towards Gorizia and Trieste. Toll Belluno-Villesse around 15.00 EUR. Hard to say which route is better. From Cortina to AC at Belluno we drove in a tight column, so the trip dragged on endlessly. In pure kilometers, the road via Belluno is about 50 km longer than the one via Vidm (for those coming from Primorska).

Depends where you are from; from Trbiž via Tolmezza to Passo Mauro (old road) two and a half hours. Early morning the road is very empty, also beyond Passo Mauro, but I haven't hit crowds yet. If you are in Trbiž at 5 a.m.,
you will be at Rifugio Auronzo by 8 for sure. by

Everyone does what seems best to them, but my opinion is that if heading under Tre Čime (Drei Zinnen) it is best to start from Val Fiscalina (Fishleinboden). There secure parking for the whole day costs 3 euros. It is true that the access (wide comfortable trail) to hut Locatelli (Dreizinnenhütte) on the north side of the mentioned spires is about 2h longer than from hut Auronzo, but with such views they pass like a flash. Car access to hut Auronzo is used mostly by tourists who then do the excursion as described above even with very small children. I went there once and Lake Misurina made no impression on me, the south side of Tre Čime not much either; a completely different story is the first contact with South Tyrol at Passo di Monte Croce above Comelico, easiest via Sappada and St. Stefano di Cadore. What can I say; there you feel something else that shyly announces itself beforehand with the first morning views on the east side of the Dolomites. To the parking from MP Vrtojba 180 km or 2.5 h in the morning hours, toll Villesse-Carnia via Udine approx. 5 eur. What can I say; for me the Sexten Dolomites are the law, they are still waiting for you. LP

I was in these places for the first time, a bit scouting and of course more touristy than hiking. Given the attractiveness and easy access, the number and structure of visitors on the circular path around the Three Peaks are accordingly high. Not for lovers of lonely paths! I could breathe easy only when from the promenade we turned to less crowded trails.
Continuation on the circular path due to the indescribable crowd was at least for me real torment. But I softened it with enjoying the views (though somewhat in clouds). The landscape is really fantastic. Next time on the path that MiranK describes.

Also my driving variant: Trbiž - Austria - Hermagor - Drava valley - Three Peaks - good three hours from Mojstrana, no toll costs except 22€ for road to Auronzo. Possible from Hermagor continue to Kotschach Mauthen, from there to Drava valley or further over Lesachtal (Karnische Dolomiten Alpenstrasse). These two variants are better, but currently repairing road between Hermagor and Kotschach, so the first variant described too. Least traffic on the last, as we almost completely avoid the main traffic route from Austria to Dolomites.

Hermagor, Slovenes once called Šmohor. Unfortunately, no more Slovenes. Sprechen Sie Deutsch, Matias? Gehen wir nach Laibach?

I speak German too. Unfortunately I'm too young and on my map there's only Hermagor. And local signs in all these places are only in German. Unfortunately it's like that, thanks for the remark, I'll add Šmohor to my dictionary.

By the way, I've never heard of Tri Cine (not only @1mitjas but approx 90% of Slovenians who were there don't even know where it is). From the context and pictures I see it's about TRE CIME. 'Cima' is peak in Italian, 'cine' are supposedly tits! velik nasmeh

'Tri Cine' only Slovenians say and no one else in Europe. It's not written like that anywhere there either!

Many people in places under the Cimes have German as their mother tongue, so I don't know if Drei Zinnen wouldn't be more correct. Here's another link with pictures and some data on these peaks: http://www.summitpost.org/tre-cime-di-lavaredo-drei-zinnen/150212

But I know well enough where I was (been multiple times to all three peaks, not just the walk around).

With my first post I wanted to give one more tip on the route, which seems best to me especially for Gorenjci (avoids toll, tunnel), you drive 10 min longer. If the tunnel has what happens lately almost daily then this route is faster.

With this I end my posting in this thread.

@1mitjas: sorry didn't mean to insult you. Yes, Tre Cime lie on border between Veneto region (mostly or almost fully Italian-speaking) and South Tyrol (mostly German-speaking).

And yes, 'Drei Zinnen' would also be correct name, like Bozen for Bolzano, Bruneck for Brunicco, Sexten for Sesto (from there start to circular path around Three Peaks from South Tyrol side - good 3h walk from Dolomitenhof hotel).

Anyway on South Tyrol in areas where German-speaking minority mostly lives, road signs have German names first then Italian. Luxury Slovenian minority will never get. Austria cared a bit better for its own. Best is in South Tyrolean town La Villa (Ger. Stern) under Lavarella saddle where Ladins predominate and entrance sign to town is trilingual: Ladin first then German and Italian last! cool velik nasmeh

That's why it's right to say Tre Cime when talking to a German and Drei Zinnen when talking to an Italian. Correctly we can start speaking when both care for Slovenian minority and bilingual signs.
