One nice tour is to go up from the South Tyrol side. From the Dolomitenhof hotel in Sexten (Sesto), where there is paid parking, it is about 3.5 hours to the junction on the path around the Peaks. Nice day trip and you also avoid the toll from Cortina.

Pima, I checked photo archives from two years ago. The whole path took us almost 4 hours, with stops 5.5. We extended the circular path around the Three Peaks (Tre Cime di Lavaredo) to the Lacatelli hut and the peak above it - Sasso di Sesto. We returned under Torre di Toblin and Sasso di Sesto. Under the Locatelli hut there are also nice little lakes Laghi di Piani, where you can make a calm stop, especially if not climbing Sasso di Sesto. The Locatelli hut was very crowded, but at the lakes and on Sasso di Sesto it was quiet. If I were alone on the trip, I would extend the path to the Pian di Cengia hut and further to Crode Fiscalina. Path description: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/rifugio_auronzo_croda_fiscalina_di_mezzo___oberbachernspitze_/39/1087/1811 But like this it was just right amount of walking for a family trip. Not just lack of fitness, also walking above 2300 m a.s.l. contributes to greater fatigue. With a stop in Cortina and long drive more than enough for a day trip. Otherwise, the path described by MiranK in the post 27.8.2013 tempts me.

In my 2013 post I didn't want to open a new topic - Path around Three Peaks (Tre Cime di Lavaredo), as it didn't seem sensible. If the editor of these sites thinks otherwise, please move the post to a new topic or change the title of the existing one. Why under this topic do those who were on nearby peaks Monte Paterno and Torre di Toblin also post? Probably they didn't see that there are already open topics with those titles: http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?ita=1&gorovjeid=39&id=2952&stran=1 http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?ita=1&gorovjeid=39&id=3855&stran=1 Let the editor make some order and move the contents to the topic where they belong; the mentioned topics can also be merged, as neither describes the path to the top of the Three Peaks - which I would call Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Suzana, if you mean extending the tour from Locatelli hut - Drei Zinnen hut to Bullele - Pian di Cengia hut and visiting Croda Fiscalina summit, I really recommend descent via Comici - Zigmondy hut. Time-wise and difficulty-wise it is exactly the same; but the views on the return are unforgettable. Jovan, you are right, but then this thread doesn't belong here at all, but among pure alpinistic ascents, which ascents to Three Peaks summits also are.

Kucelj, if you start from Val Fiscalina it takes cca 3 hours to get there, to Auronzo hut cca 3.5 hours.

On Thursday and Friday we spent over 24 hours around Tre Cime / Drei Zinnen with base at Auronzo hut. Half-board with discount for PZS membership is 40 euros, road toll is 24 + 5 euros per extra day. But in high season you need to be early: at 10am the road was already closed because the top parking was full and without hut reservation we'd have to walk or bus 600 m up. Even so we waited 1.5 hours as they lifted the barrier only when a spot by the hut freed up. First day we did the tourist circle around the Peaks, with stops at three huts along the way. On Friday we split, trio did alpinistic ascent to (I think) Cima Piccola (III/IV), some did ferrata through tunnels starting from Dreizinnenhütte, others explored surroundings on (as we'd say) mulatieras. We had plans for weekend but weather spoiled early. Some pics at http://www.flickriver.com/photos/belatrix/sets/72157657340227451/

Hello. I'm wondering what footwear you recommend for the hike around the Cims, sturdy boots or are sports sneakers with a better sole sufficient? Thanks for the answers.

No need for sports shoes, put on clogs or go barefoot!

For the path you're asking about, stronger sports shoes or light high or low hiking boots are sufficient. Ostrorogi's answer is out of place. Good luck on the trail - I'm going again in August.

"Ostrorogi", thanks for your "wit". Be aware that with time sharp horns get blunt, sharpness is lost and only a blunt shriveled thing remains.....
