Tolsta Košuta 2057m

viharnik1. 11. 2009 18:03:26
Today I'm heading out to see how time passes for Jezersko folks up there. I drive to Sp. Jezersko, turn left to Virnik into the Kokra river spring valley. Leave the car a few hundred meters in the valley and walk the road to Tolsta Košuta. The road goes past the hunting hut and higher past two collapsed brick houses, which spoil the otherwise untouched nature. A little higher the path splits; left goes along the border ridge through the natural quarry, the other more recommended right on top of the border ridge, which is sometimes only wide for the path. Between Pečovnik and Plešivec there are lots of "Russian steppes" and frozen puddles. To the summit of Tolsta Košuta I climb directly up the middle grassy gully, where higher on the ridge it joins the path. Few visitors only from Dolgih Njiv, me the only one from Jezersko - they looked at me strangely. On the way back I bypass Plešivec on the planšar-cyclist track and cut forest roads where sensible. Up I took 3.45 h, down probably less. Went through a still very little touched corner of the mountains. Recommend to all with a bit more fitness, others the excellent road can take to 1500 m high. Already in the car I notice (also in autumn) that Jezersko has early frost +2°C at 15h. Lp-Roknasmehjezikvelik nasmeh

Well, I was there too with my boyfriend at the hunting hut and further to the ruins, which are remains of a guard post. We went by road, it's well drivable, fantastic view, especially the golden larches impressed me. Does it just seem so to me or did they really turn yellow early this year?

On Košutnikov Turn was on Saturday 30.10. From quarry to upper Dolge njive foggy and frozen. Then warm and sunny weather. Up to summit via eastern path, descent western. Nice loop tour, views over our mountains. Saw group of chamois too.

9.10 my wife and I climbed Tolsta Košuta from Sp. Dolge njive. At Zg. Dolge njive we searched a bit for the path, then went straight up the middle gully towards the summit and didn't miss anything. Some chamois accompanied our steps.
Weather in mountains nice, wonderful views over peaks. Ljubljana basin foggy, same as Carinthia.
No pics, camera was on trip to Bosnia. LP

Just after 5 am we climbed from Krnica past Dolge njive to Tolsta Košuta (both summits), from there along the ridge towards Košutnikov Turn. Through steep pathless terrain we managed with some difficulties to reach the marked trail leading from Košutnikov Turn. Hot, not a cloud!

Today we climbed via planina Dolge njive to Tolsta Košuta. Morning clear, a bit windy. Just before 8 o'clock we were at the eastern summit of Tolsta Košuta. Descended to saddle and past natural window visited western summit. Back to eastern summit and down the eastern edge of Tolsta Košuta to Orlovo sedlo. Before descending to Planina Zg. Dolge njive, wandered a while over quite scrubby summits of Mala Košuta.
On both pastures besides cows also horses and donkeys grazing. Planšarija with surroundings very nicely arranged and well visited. Parking full.

There's always some piece of unexplored path that turns up, not crowded and offering a chance for a jaunt. We went for something shorter today, Tolsta Košuta the goal, a summit on the Košuta ridge where I haven't beeneek. Already at the start without much debate we slightly adjusted the plan and turned onto the border line with Austria towards Mala Košuta. Interesting little peak, we climbed its crumbliest right summit, and one can cross right to the other side, where after descent we continued to the original goal. Occasionally steep, but today dry, firm and without issues. No snakes, despite warnings and warm day. From the east summit we descended to the natural window, then up again to the west summit. Views beautiful, as far as you can imagine. Then back to the first summit and after some breaks down to planina Zgornja Dolga njiva. When we were already there, also to Plešivec, right bumping into the signpost (well yeah). From it down the other side, the path takes us to planina Zgornja Brsnina, there we turned right on the cart track and came back to where we started. A little more and we were at the hut, where there were quite some people in the warm sun. The ascent today was unplanned, as it happened. If planned, it would go something like this: Planina Zgornja Dolga njiva, right on the cart track to Brsnina, there up to Plešivec (hard to find the entry without knowledge), over Plešivec back to Zg. Dolga njiva, along the border line and border path to Mala (Meli?) Košuta, over it down, then again on the border path to Tolsta Košuta and back to the planšarija. It must be noted that it's overall an unmarked path, some pathless sections, especially from Brsnina to Plešivec is a bit of a puzzle. At the hut we learned that the marked path from Dolga njiva to Jezersko is almost unusable, although drawn on the map, so don't rely on it when searching for Plešivec and the approach. Nice day, nice trip, a bit longer than planned but much more interestingnasmeh.

The trip to Dolga njiva felt early spring-like, of course only in the upper southern-exposed parts to the sun. Below in the shade the snow is fully frozen, little on the trip but enough for sliding if choosing terrain. No to the summit (sinking south snow to wet base, sometimes snow just enough for slip). Descend to skis and ski down wide snowy gully to Dolga njiva. At hut on Dolga njiva already big avalanche roaring from Košutnikov turn. Beautiful trip, better with more snow.

I see last time I said goodbye to snow on TK, today I greeted it... Not much... below summit couple nasty patches for disorientation but doable. Summit sunny with light breeze. On return more caution on snowy parts. Was alone today on Dolga Njiva and summit... and it was great.

Yesterday, 17 Nov 2012 with hiking "partner" headed to Tolsta Košuta. Nice not too strenuous trip. First surprise at Dolga Njiva pasture, hut open. After morning "snack" continue to upper Dolga Njiva. Sun and light breeze there. Walk pure pleasure. Continue to summit bit on path bit across. Can't miss, summit always ahead. Saw three hikers above and clear sky. Wind picks up towards summit blowing strong, walk bit harder but nothing scary. Beautiful panorama around, especially excited by haze over Kočna in Kamnik Savinja Alps. After short summit view and pics soon retreat to sheltered spot. Descent passing viewing Košuta and even to Triglav. See Austrian side to Uršlja Gora, Olševa, Raduha, word godlike panorama.
On way to car stop again at hut. Stomach calls for food. Good really GOOD veal stew and buckwheat polenta with cracklings satisfy all wishes that day. Nice chat with hutkeeper and goodbye.
Really nice day spent. Will return to this nice corner of homeland. Only wish everywhere in our mountains such friendly welcome and good food like here at DOLGA NJIVA under Košuta

We also headed out for Tolsta Košuta that day, but chose Pečovnik (Jezersko) as the starting point. Via Plešivec we reached Zgornja Dolga Njiva, where the wind had slowly started blowing. We climbed to the top partly on the path and partly off-trail. When we got to the summit pretty quickly, unfortunately we couldn't stay as long as we'd have liked due to the strong cold wind. We returned along the border via Mala Košuta all the way to the Plešivec junction.

Last time I walked the Košuta ridge in May when I went to Košutnikov Turn. Back then on the Spodnja Dolga Njiva pasture I "swore"eek that next time I'm around here, I'd go to Tolsta Košuta. Until then there weren't many posts up there, so I thought "phew, this'll be great, another in the chain of 2000ers that aren't too crowded"nasmehmežikanje.
Somehow all week I wanted to go to Kepa. Weather didn't look great at first, but as the weekend approached it looked betternasmeh. Until yesterday evening I didn't know exactly where to go, but I was sure I'd head to Karavanke this time. Tolsta Košuta was first on the list, if Kepa didn't work out.
So I went...alonevelik nasmeheek. And it was fine....nice..interestingnasmeh... I start at the quarry just after 10am. A bit late today, but no problem, weather's definitely nice, actually wonderfulmežikanje. Already at the start there was quite a crowd, I was surprised. Well, obviously no peace here this time like usual. Somehow I start at the same time as another lady...she's pretty fast, too fast for me. Somewhere above Spodnja Dolga Njiva the sun awaits menasmeh...nicely warming. So time to ditch the first layer of clothes...Then slowly, really slowlycool, at my pace, pace of enjoying and looking aroundnasmeh, towards the top...Walking on pleasant, dry, sunlit grass...Really nice crunch underfoot...supermežikanje. All the time I look ahead to keep the pasture fence in sight...walking fairly steeply up. It's a bit trodden-off-trail of course, but since I have the summit ahead, can't get losteek. Finally at the pasture fence. Here it's sometimes tricky to walk because of mud-well yeah, and the profile on the bootseek, slightly slippery. Often my gaze drifts to the KSA peaks...or their north faces...slightly covered in snow. The cliffs to the Austrian side are huge...but nice to capture in the lens. Warm sun warms the body, beautiful views the soul and heartnasmeh. At the top an older couple awaits me. Also keen hikers who march to hills, mountains or local bumps at least 2x a week. I ask about nearby peaks, get answer right away. Obviously they know mountains well. Together we then go to western TK. I'd go further, but from here it gets serious, so I turn backvelik nasmeh. Maybe I'll traverse the ridge with someone more experienced. Really want to. Views today divine...sight to the Hohe Tauern, nearby border peaks, Grintovec, Raduha, Olševa and Peca, and of course the Julian Alps wonderful...especially enchantingnasmehmežikanje. This year rarely offered such a view, so I was extra happy this time. On the way back wind starts blowing stronger slowly, so descent to the hut was quick. There I chat with the caretakers and drink tea in peace, then slowly descend to start.
Tolsta Košuta is really beautiful. But from Zgornja Dolga Njiva pasture it's a real knee-grippereekvelik nasmeh. But no problem, main thing is that upon reaching its summit you feel that warmth and happiness you often don't in the valley. Really, very beautiful, so I warmly recommend a visit.
The first sun rays greet me somewhere at the junction, where I go left for KT.1
