Last time I walked the Košuta ridge in May when I went to Košutnikov Turn. Back then on the Spodnja Dolga Njiva pasture I "swore" that next time I'm around here, I'd go to Tolsta Košuta. Until then there weren't many posts up there, so I thought "phew, this'll be great, another in the chain of 2000ers that aren't too crowded" . Somehow all week I wanted to go to Kepa. Weather didn't look great at first, but as the weekend approached it looked better . Until yesterday evening I didn't know exactly where to go, but I was sure I'd head to Karavanke this time. Tolsta Košuta was first on the list, if Kepa didn't work out. So I went...alone . And it was fine....nice..interesting ... I start at the quarry just after 10am. A bit late today, but no problem, weather's definitely nice, actually wonderful . Already at the start there was quite a crowd, I was surprised. Well, obviously no peace here this time like usual. Somehow I start at the same time as another lady...she's pretty fast, too fast for me. Somewhere above Spodnja Dolga Njiva the sun awaits me ...nicely warming. So time to ditch the first layer of clothes...Then slowly, really slowly , at my pace, pace of enjoying and looking around , towards the top...Walking on pleasant, dry, sunlit grass...Really nice crunch underfoot...super . All the time I look ahead to keep the pasture fence in sight...walking fairly steeply up. It's a bit trodden-off-trail of course, but since I have the summit ahead, can't get lost . Finally at the pasture fence. Here it's sometimes tricky to walk because of mud-well yeah, and the profile on the boots , slightly slippery. Often my gaze drifts to the KSA peaks...or their north faces...slightly covered in snow. The cliffs to the Austrian side are huge...but nice to capture in the lens. Warm sun warms the body, beautiful views the soul and heart . At the top an older couple awaits me. Also keen hikers who march to hills, mountains or local bumps at least 2x a week. I ask about nearby peaks, get answer right away. Obviously they know mountains well. Together we then go to western TK. I'd go further, but from here it gets serious, so I turn back . Maybe I'll traverse the ridge with someone more experienced. Really want to. Views today divine...sight to the Hohe Tauern, nearby border peaks, Grintovec, Raduha, Olševa and Peca, and of course the Julian Alps wonderful...especially enchanting . This year rarely offered such a view, so I was extra happy this time. On the way back wind starts blowing stronger slowly, so descent to the hut was quick. There I chat with the caretakers and drink tea in peace, then slowly descend to start. Tolsta Košuta is really beautiful. But from Zgornja Dolga Njiva pasture it's a real knee-gripper . But no problem, main thing is that upon reaching its summit you feel that warmth and happiness you often don't in the valley. Really, very beautiful, so I warmly recommend a visit.
