Yesterday I did the first winter tour to Uršlja gora. I went from the direction of Suhi Dol-Razborje, and by car to the junction Uršlja-Venerca. From there the road to the top of Uršlje is not plowed. So I went on foot from there. The day was nice, only at the top there was fog for a while, which then blew away. The hut was closed.

This is a very nice tour to Uršlja gora. Park at Ivarček Lake, then up the Ironworkers' Path to the mountain. The path is steep and well marked, the hut is open on weekends. Regards Franc

I'm wondering which path to Uršlja gora is used in winter conditions. Thanks, Jožek

Even in winter conditions all paths to Uršlja gora are passable. The shortest is from Naravskih Ledin. The Ironworkers' Path is more difficult. Regards Franc

Yesterday afternoon I also headed to Uršlja gora from Sleme. Nice dry path up to 1350m elevation although a bit muddy up to the cargo cableway height. Then snow starts and there's quite a bit although dry patches appear in between but it's quite slippery on the snow, recommend crampons, without it slips . At the top nice weather sun, and open hut

Yesterday I went from Poštarski dom (via Kozarnica) to the top. The path is mostly dry, only at the beginning some mud. Just below the top on the path still some snow. Caution on descent won't hurt. At the top great view in all directions.

We've been planning to go to Uršlja for quite some time. Yesterday the decision fell to go into more winter conditions before the holidays. We enjoyed those today. Šoštanj - Zavodnje - Sleme (the road to the cross is plowed). Already quite a few cars - it's snowing, fogs are gathering in the spruce tops and it promises a real winter day. The path is trodden and in three hours we are at the top. At the top a surprise awaits us - strong wind, snowdrifts, visibility (almost 0). Slowly we look for tracks of predecessors, which the wind successfully covers, and we almost run into the chapel. We orient towards the hut and enter the warmth. The hut is full of visitors and the friendly keeper serves us quickly. We refuel quickly and make space for incoming hikers (it was very visited, despite bad weather). We had the cameras more in our bags. We took a few photos (no problem) but more material for nice memories of the wonderful tour. We returned in one hour and thirty-five minutes. Lp

Although "milkina tabla" really doesn't belong in this environment, it is the protective sign of Kralj Matjaž park, where Uršlja gora and surroundings belong too!

Already from afar, as we approached the chapel it was immediately noticeable ( annoying ). It really stands out - when we looked at it up close we noticed: the sign is completely scribbled ( ugly sign and a bunch of other remarks ). I'm not against a warning ( notice ) that we are in the Kralj Matjaž park area - but in a form that fits the area ( many design options ). Best

Of course, the sign could look in the natural shape of a sawn tree profile and carved words and it would be fine.

This path from Sleme to Urško I use for building fitness at least once a month, so I've got used to not practically registering the signs! As a local I also know the legend connected to this mountain, I got it in the Dom na Uršlji gori! On Plešivec stands a church dedicated to St. Ursula. The church is visited especially in summer by many tourists and even more pilgrims. Next to the church is an inn. When you reach the top and enjoy the beautiful Carinthian view to Vrbško jezero, you'd like to refresh and quench your thirst with cold mountain water - but no water anywhere, at most a little rainwater. Right there where the church stands today, there was once a lake where the water man lived. There was no St. Ursula yet. St. Ursula came from Croatia and first settled on Poharci near Slovenj Gradec. But Ursula didn't like it on Poharci because shepherds cracked whips too much. She decided to move to another mountain. At the saddle near St. Daniel there was a nice plain overgrown with tall grass. In this beautiful place one day they found the image of St. Ursula, meaning they should build a church there. But the owner of the meadow was a stingy woman and feared pilgrims would trample all the nice fodder, so she didn't allow building the church. In the morning when she got up, there was a deep gully where the church should have stood. Offended St. Ursula left and came to Plešivška planina, where she knelt on a stone and viewed the landscape. On the rock where she knelt, knee prints are still visible today and pilgrims diligently crumble rock bits to take home as souvenir and remedy. On the deer pasture St. Ursula's foot sank into the rock. The indentation remained, pilgrims still stick their feet in it and are convinced it will never hurt again. Many have managed to put their foot in but hard to get out. When St. Ursula reached the mountain resembling a triangular pyramid between Slovenj Gradec, Šoštanj and Črna-Mežica, she liked it very much. On the nicest spot there was a lake with the water man living in it. St. Ursula called him out and ordered him to move the lake elsewhere, offering her previous dwelling on Poharci. The water man was very bored on Plešivec because all year he saw no one but shepherds who always whipped the same and sang songs he knew by heart, and for some 200 years no shepherdess had appeared at the lake to talk to. He was pleased with St. Ursula's order. When he promised her to move the lake to Poharci, as men do, he didn't think how easy it is to promise a woman and how hard sometimes to fulfill. When the water man finally dragged the lake and moved himself to Poharci, a purse of gold hung on every corner. As soon as the lake dried, people found on the dry bottom the image of St. Ursula that had disappeared from the plain near St. Daniel. They immediately realized a miracle had happened. They built a church in honor of St. Ursula and baptized the mountain after her. The church is quite large. Masons couldn't make a large stone ceiling, so they made a wooden one. In my youth the name Plešivec/Uršlja g. was always used, I don't remember otherwise. Nowadays it's only Uršlja g., I don't hear Plešivec anymore. I remember best when the TV transmitter Plešivec started! Why did it change like that? Lp

The old name for the mountain is still Plešivec. There are two explanations for the name: the first says it got the name due to the dance floor on the top; the second that it got the name after farmer Florjan Plešivčnik and his son Anton, who were masters of Plešivec slopes together with farms Macigoj, Naravnik, Šisernik, Vernišek, Močilnik and Prevolnik. After building the church in 1602 the name Uršlja gora caught on among pilgrims and has stayed popular until today!

On Friday, a winter ascent to Uršlja gora from Slemen, where the snow sort of starts. The weather was freezing cold, so a fast pace was needed to warm up, and apart from poles no other winter gear was needed. The hut was open, inside like a sauna, a bit too hot... Despite the fog it was wonderful, as frost and snow play nicely with trees and shapes. Back over Nravnske Ledine...

2.1. indescribable crowd on "Urška", so no joy even to visit any hut, but that's right, how would our mountains be empty if huts were deserted; again one beautiful day. LP!

Is the Železarska path steeper than over Kozji hrbet or just longer?

The Železarska path is longer and also steeper than the path over Kozji hrbet. Lp Franc
