If you want peace and quiet, you'd better leave Velika Planina alone for the next few days because some international orienteering meeting is taking place with over 200 parked cars and a corresponding number of people

On Monday, June 25, we also walked among cars. There were definitely over 400 as we even counted them for a while. For us walking on foot to Quiet Valley and further, they dusted the day a lot, but then on the alp those so-called car-mountaineers got lost a bit and there was no crowd. Maybe they should collect toll like in Logarska or Mangart, Vršič or Bohinj, then Velika Planina would be really only an alp not parking lot. Jana

Dear Jana! I've been going to the alp for over 30 years (almost every weekend) on foot and believe me, every year more horrible regarding traffic or so-called car-mountaineers. Best regards! Vojka

People who think with Velika planina they can do everything, really don't know how to DESTROY it. Ljubljana hoteliers drive tourists who don't belong on mountains at all. Wrong shoes, loud, uncultured...

I've also been going to the alp for 30 years, sometimes you found peace there, now it seems to me best when there's bad weather and in the evening when the screamers go to the huts - then you can still hear the silence ... Best, Irena

I think the problem could be solved with a symbolic toll of 1€. The money would be used for preserving cultural heritage on the alp. Best, Tonči

Yes, toll should be around 10€. Not 1€!

Kamnik folks, follow the Bohinj example. Those who park under the cable car: 1 hour 1€, road 10€.

They can't organize themselves because there are too many different interests!

Well, those who park under the gondola cable car should pay 1€ for the whole day - otherwise I completely agree that car tourists should pay at least 10x the price. Especially those who don't go often to mountains also don't know real mountain culture - so from such will quite often "fall off" various metal-plastic decorations ... maybe I'm wrong too.

Cars to the pasture altogether forbidden; more cars than cows. Shame what some people do.

Should really make the area like TNP and fines for thrown-away litter in the mountains should be astronomical. Well, if some child throws away a candy wrapper, we won't fine him - warn him not to do that, but wouldn't say that huge amount of cans (beer) are thrown by children!? Well, those at 20! As for cars, would allow only those who are, say, hut keepers - others nicely in the valley tie shoes and fill backpack and voilà!

Good you weren't up there on Wednesday 15.08.2007 because that was a shame from Kranjski Rak to Dom na Kisovcu, car by car, so much metal we couldn't even walk on the road. Cyclists were standing. Stupid car tourists honking like crazy... Drop dead!!!!!!!!!! Wouldn't believe but I was there. SUCH A THING YOU DON'T SEE!!! When they mess everything in town and still pigsty up there that's some fashion or what...(MUST MAKE BARRIERS) For illustration it was worse than on Rožnik for May 1st. Explanation was mass already over! Mary's holiday and all drove cars to mass. God help us hikers. Will it be heard? We'll see... (Can send pics but where?)

Just attached them here so we'll all see! There was already a barrier but it got legs. Kamnik mayor Smolnikar should know how badly the pasture itself is treated and could act for its benefit but I'm afraid he's one of theirs - namely the aforementioned piggery of the pasture!

As long as they sell all cheese, curd and some sour milk on Velika Planina no hiker will worry about columns of cars, I think hut keepers don't care either. Some years ago policemen on horses paraded on Velika Planina and I think it was more or less bearable. Hope authorities wake up soon and put barrier and start collecting toll like on Vršič or Mangart. They can learn from Bohinj guys too. Sabina

Hello, I'm reading your comments and I'm less and less drawn to Velika Planina, but is it really that badddd Well, just tomorrow we should set off if the weather allows, of course.

Velika Planina is beautiful (most beautiful is path from Kranjski Rak) just not for weekend. Then too many people for my taste. Even more beautiful in spring because of flowers and October when larches start yellowing. I also like winter tour... gorgeous... whiteness and biiiig blue sky. Good luck!

Hello, I'm interested how much time is needed for path from Stahovica to Velika Planina (moderate pace)? I wouldn't want to be one of polluters of Velika Planina as I think all should protect it from human destruction.B

Velika Planina is always beautiful, the most beautiful when you wander around it alone. Without noise, crowds of people, music and all sorts of other pollution. Lado

From Stahovica via Praprotno past St. Primož church it's 3 hours. I was there in spring when there was lots of flowers and the path was a bit longer because it's a sin not to enjoy and recharge batteries looking at colorful meadows. Good luck!
