Laypeople think power lines emit electromagnetic radiation over long distances, but my colleague MSc electrical engineer and I calculated that the proximity harmful to human health to the HV line is only within a radius up to 10cm from the HV line. So, you'd get exposed to harmful el.mag. radiation if your head was 10-15cm away from the line, further it's negligible. Plots under power lines are thus unnecessarily much cheaper, which some smartly exploit.
