Where to go with a dog?

Print
U&Q13. 07. 2011 19:35:58
Hi!

I'm new to hiking and need some idea for a trip with the dog. So looking for mountains/hills that are also less visited in these summer weekends and no fixed ropes, walls to climb on the path...
Last Sunday we were at Kurji vrh and it was great, didn't meet a soul. I have a friendly dog, but it's big and not everyone likes dogs.
Would be happy for any suggestion. Thanks

For a dog's whole life you have peaks and huts up to about 1500m. On these paths there are mostly no problems for a pet dog of normal size and fitness!!

I've been taking a small dog with me to the mountains for a few years now. Of course we started with lower hills, now he can make it to Kredarica and back. Always leashed because of people and for safety. For him I always have enough water and treats.

I think we've written about this a year ago and two years ago too,...
We usually don't take our dog because he has quite a few aches and would suffer more than enjoy.

But it really bothers me when loose dogs run wild on trails, pastures, mule tracks,... And then we step in poop, hide sandwiches,....

If we look at northern neighbors, almost at every former border crossing there's a warning that dogs must be leashed. Everyone follows it.
Here of course free as Prešeren. And that's not right.
I have nothing against furry and barking friends, quite the opposite - but there must be order.
A month ago on Golica. Dogs walking free, barking at each other, owners whistling all over, and a wonderful cocker spaniel snatches my sandwich which I left next to me on the bench. I just untied my shoelace and it was gone.
Dog owner - nothing.

Not long ago at Zelenica. Dog jumping everywhere. Among people, on the meadow (trail is nicely marked), dog owner all over too. Why do the markers mark, I wonder, when so-called hikers really don't need marks.

Couple days ago on Slivnica.
Frantic dogs, owner took three up, they charged at horses.
Horses went wild and hikers literally ran.

Week ago at Slemenova špica.
Same story.....

So don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of furry and other animals, but we need to ensure safety for the animals themselves and other mountain visitors so that ALL walk safely.

Well, that's why I look for more remote mountains. My bitch is very calm, too scared of horses, cows... to chase them. Mostly ignores people, but you never know.

Don't have her on leash, because she has 40kg and different pace than me. Can't imagine where I'd fly if she pulled me on descent on the steepest part. Easier for her to run down, not for me.

And really not a wild dog, but trained pup.

I too have done quite a number (also longer) tours with a (trained) dog. But she was consistently - where I expected people - on leash. When going with her I chose tours "off the beaten path" or "non-weekend" ones, I'm not a fan of free jumping of four-legs around (unknown) people.

skalar 50: maybe some concrete suggestion for a tour off the beaten path? Like, for whole day.
I don't dare just follow one path wherever it leads, my orientation would quickly fail me.

U&Q, for whole day you want idea?! Well, even on some "puppy" you can fool around whole day mežikanje Otherwise:
SHORTER: former border crossing Jezersko and either to Virnikov Grintovec or Pristovški Storžič. To Grintovec also from Jezersko from church above hotel. Nice also to Jerebikovec from Mojstrana or from road from Mojstrana to Radovna. Or to Goli vrh past Jenkova planina, can from Planšarsko jezero or from Austria from Belska Kočna. Or leave car in Slaparska vas or Grahovše and go to Bela peč and on to Ženiklovec (Veliki Javornik) and past Rekar back. From Planica to Ciprnik is nice too. Or from Planica past waterfalls to Slemenova špica.
LONGER:
From Zadnjica along mule track to Kriške pode and further to one of lakes. From Zadnjica to sedlo Čez Dol and Zadnjiški ozebnik, descent other side over Trebiščina. Or Zadnjica - Luknja - Dolič and back. If not back then from Dolič over Hribarice to Prehodavce and to Zadnjica. Long!
Anyway, I guess... On this site all trips and tours are also pictured and by pictures you might easiest find what suits you two, and schedule and tour description too.

thanks. now I have suggestions for the whole month =). somehow figured out that if in searching for trips I choose unmarked paths and look at tours without comments, probably won't meet many people on the path. some descriptions even say the mountain is less known.
thanks for all suggestions

U&Q ,
one more idea: park near a hotel on Pokljuka. And go with the doggy through the forest to Lipanca, to Blejska koča. Then to the ridge, say to Brdo and then towards Viševnik. Don't have to go exactly to Viševnik, but can, descend to the barracks at Rudno polje and go on forest paths, where there are cross-country ski trails in winter, back to the hotel. This path can also stretch to more than a solid morning zavijanje z očmi As for animals . . . sheep are plenty everywhere, even in cities not just countryside zadregazmeden And some bull, god forbid needed too mrk pogled

U&Q,
"turbo" wrote quite a few nice variants...anyway yes - just on tour descriptions where there are no comments will be - if you like the tour otherwise - just right for enjoying with your furry friend. Enjoy nature!

With my Rex we've combed the western Karavanke and part of the Julians. He has stamina, even though he's no longer a youngster, plenty, so he's able to walk and run around from morning till evening. I don't drag him (anymore) on steeper secured paths, nor on longer tours in hot days.
A dog can go almost everywhere a human can, his only problem is he has no hands for grip. That's the whole philosophy about ->where with a dog?<.
When meeting people, of course put him on the leash and problem solved. No different than when taking him for a walk.
On pastures where livestock grazes sometimes it happens that they want to attack him, so we avoid that. Happened already that because of a mad bull we had to return home. But we repeated the tour in autumn when no more livestock.
Otherwise: surely he could make it to Triglav too, but actually no sense in making crowds. He unlike many humans knows how to enjoy equally elsewhere.
My opinion about people who don't like dogs and maybe even claim they don't belong in mountains is that it's their personal deformation, or their problem. This planet is available to all living beings.. and that - with equal right.
in a trance.. :-)1

U&Q, if you're still following, one more suggestion. Close, but quite long. Park near Golnik hospital. Then towards Gozd village and direct path to Tolsti vrh. From Tolsti vrh to Kriška planina, to the hut and from there on one of the paths back to the valley. It adds up nicely. But this is more for weekdays, on weekends you won't be alone.
And another quite solitary: Mrzla Voda valley. Drive via Rateče towards Trbiž, continue towards Predel, in Riofredo village where the road turns sharply left, turn right into the village (small sign). Park at the chapel, then you have about 5 km of gravel to walk. No crowds there ever. How high you go, as you wish. Can go right under the notch of Krniška špica, or towards Lastovice, to Prašnik saddle, anything goes . . .

Yeah and dog booties -70€, and backpack -120€... Good market niche, nothing to say!
Mine walks barefoot like all normal dogs and without any gear, always without problems on paths, when we get home he recovers faster than me. Clear, he has 4 I have 2 legsnasmeh
Doesn't need special harness (who thinks so, shouldn't take dog to mountains).., on narrow ridges etc, goes nicely precisely in front or behind me. Why a dog would fear heights, simply don't understand. Maybe first time, next time surely not anymore.

I think the path difficulty as presented on this portal is a pretty good measure.

Most easy ones are suitable for dogs, partially difficult conditionally, difficult and more no. A dog can be a good hiker, but not a climber. And a dog can fear heights too.

By taking dogs on unsuitable paths for them you endanger the dog, yourself and other people(if that's your priority in that order).

A dog that regularly goes to high mountains(e.g. rescue) is used to scree and rocks, a dog that goes to mountains a few times a year isn't and needs proper footwear. Think if you walked barefoot. And water? Dog gets thirsty too! And first aid? And more! It's not just stuff the dog in the car and go!

And those who do it exclusively to terrorize people and vent on them, set off with unleashed dogs(and some without leash at all), stay home from mountains. You can exactly see where most of you are: on somewhat medium visited paths! On crowded ones you don't dare make a mess, on deserted not enough victims to make it worth it.

Oh, and where it says DOGS ON LEASH, guaranteed at least a third without.

Hand on heart, I've been most threatened in the mountains by, mildly put, impatient and hostile towards those who think differently. Man is wolf to man zmeden
