Großer Knallstein is 2599 meter high peak located in the Lower Tauern mountain range. The peak is located 6 km west from the center of Sankt Nikolai im Sölktal and 10 km south from the center of Großsölk. The nearest mountain hut is Bräualm, located 5km east-southeast. A little further is bivouac Mößna Tritscher. The peak is located northeast of the valley Rantengraben.
