On Saturday early in the morning I set off for this neglected peak in the Polovnik ridge. Neglected and remote from civilization. I didn't meet anyone on the path. Only loud bird chirping and the roaring of the Soča accompanied me, on the ridge also curious chamois glances. The mule track can be followed to the top, practically no snow, just above the hunting hut when crossing the small snowfield (5m) some caution is needed. At the top of the ridge a distinct divide, spring to the south, winter to the north. Nice views, I noticed some visitors on Krasji vrh and it was time to slowly head to the valley. The forecast and approaching clouds predicted worsening already in the morning hours. Luckily it was a bit late...

On Saturday to Krn, this time for the first time via the Silva Korena path. It holds what many have already written: in wet conditions it's slippery and the slip risk on grasses is high, so caution is not superfluous. Otherwise protections, except two pulled-out pitons right at the start, OK. Although Krn was besieged by many hikers on Saturday, we few who went via SK could enjoy the peace and nature. Sadly Krn got its cap early, so there were no views and the photos match that.

On Monday from Vrtovina to Kuclj. The path below was very muddy, towards the top idyll, which I waited for since Saturday, when despite the nice forecast it just wouldn't be proper weather. And although the valley was already bathing in sun in the afternoon, I caught it on Kuclj only on descent, just before sunset. No more sense about conditions, coming 3 days with snowing and strong bora, by Saturday it'll all be different...

2.1.15 around similar time as SuzanaM on Matajur, but from our side - from Livk. Road to Livk and further to Avse excellently plowed and salted. Inversion noticeable - in valley morning -6, at Livk in shade 0, higher up sun already quite spring-like warming.
Path from Avse well trodden, snow due to high temps quite slushy and often practically walking on water, which will freeze quickly with forecasted low temps. Otherwise surprisingly little snow, most around the planina and just below the ridge. On ridge to top almost none. Snow cover very uneven, one step bare, next deep snow. Wind did its job and yesterday afternoon it was blowing quite cold on the ridge. Afternoon clouds came and martin-bathing by the summit church unfortunately off...
Quite some visits to the top, number of this year's visitors in the book I rounded to 40. Views reached far, only blue sky covered by cloudy gray.

Winter idyll is rare in Goriška and this time it was no different. A few snowflakes, momentarily sugared roofs (on Saturday) and all the beauty was over. Already a few meters above Nova Gorica, a winter fairy tale. Up the corridor to the top of Sabotin the snow cover thickened from meter to meter, towards the top about 30 cm of completely dry snow (more in drifted places), so there was some tramping training on the way. The idyll was occasionally enhanced by the sun around noon today, all the way to the ridge.... when conditions changed in an instant: cold, a fairly strong bora was blowing, carrying snow. Nevertheless, it was a pity to head straight down to the valley, so I extended along the ridge to sv. Valentin. On the way the bora really shifts you, luckily it can't shift you over the steep walls to the Soča, as it blows in the opposite direction. Below the church I turn on the Italian side back to the starting point, no one in front of me yet... Winter fairy tales are rare with us, and if they happen, they pass quickly. Given the forecast temperatures and snow amount, this time it might last a few more days.

Darinka4, on Sunday I was on Krn from Kuhinja. Little snow, on the path it starts at cca. 1900 m asl, grass is dry even higher. It was noticeable that it cooled and froze in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Most visitors were without winter gear, crampons came in handy on descent. Beautiful views, quite a crowd (parking lot full), if it had been one degree warmer, we wouldn't have wanted to descend to the valley at all.

Yesterday (Tuesday) to Skutnik from the village Učja via path 733. The fog that persisted in the valley most of the day cleared above 1000m and I could enjoy beautiful sunny weather. Pity about the clouds that prevented fantastic views, but then it would be too "kitschy". The path is completely dry up to 1500m, then some snow which was completely soaked due to the heat. Gaiters come in handy, especially on the ridge where it sinks in places even over the knees. Back along the ridge via path 731 to saddle Predolina and then via 732 back to start. Nice loop path, but next time I'll do it in the opposite direction. All junctions and the whole path well marked. What surprised me most was the solitude of these places, the whole path I didn't meet anyone, no cars on the road, as if civilization has somewhat abandoned these areas. Probably more life in summer, now it's more or less all deserted.

Dejboz, started from Magozd village. Leave car under big linden by kids and sports playground at village exit. Continue on gravel towards Trnovo ob Soči to sign for Dolec (Douc), directing right to cart track. Stick to cart track, cross Globoščak gully and other side well preserved mule track takes to top. Guide says good four hours walk, I needed 2h 45min. Forecast worsening so pace accordingly. Normally rate 3.5-4 hours. Quite big elevation gain, ca. 1300m.

On Friday evening Primorsko was fogged up too, and with the forecast for Saturday it would really be a shame to stay home. I set off from pl. Kuhinja to Krn. Weather gorgeous, spring-like warm. Views superb, only in the south the deep blue was veiled by "white cream". Path unremarkable, grasses dry, snow on the path starts above 1800m asl but caused no trouble and winter gear was not needed. It's different towards Krn Lake, where conditions look much more wintry. Plenty of visitors, which given the conditions is no surprise. Weather will probably hold for at least two more days, then Krn will be snow-covered by the end of the week.

Mukica, we really met in that slippery gully above the cave, with urbancik at the top. Well, next time we'll talk more. Good luck!

For Saturday Razor was planned. Weather forecast wasn't great, reality even worse, whole way from Nova Gorica to Bovec drizzling or raining. Started thinking about plan B. Then at Bovec rain miraculously stops and road to Zadnjica practically dry. Start cloudy, but bluish gray above promised a lot. Just below lower lake I break above cloud cover and see deep blue sky us Primorska folks could only dream of lately. Practically no wind, heat almost summery. At Razor summit with light breeze 15C (sensor in shade). Path no issues, snow all gone. But all visitors expected snow judging by ice axes on packs. Met only three people near three chamois, surprisingly few given conditions. They were fantastic, views phenomenal, just Primorska hidden under cloud cream. Anyway day like rarely in year, really shame to miss. So unexpectedly nice vs forecast I left sunglasses in car, winter gear with me though…. Two words on new path section: short and demanding. More importantly want to point out huge pile of rocks right above ferrata exit that triggers at slightest carelessness. Now when Razor mostly empty risk of something on head small, peak season tho…

On Tuesday 16.7. from Rudno polje via Kredarica to Triglav, return via Planika. When morning mists cleared, it made a wonderful day. Path bp, no crowds. Good day very rare, hence more frequent hello, ahoj,...

On Sunday I headed from Lepena towards Krn Lakes. The road to the hut is normally drivable, there's snow around the hut but plenty of parking spots.
The first serpentines of the path are bare, snow starts around 850 m asl, from there the snow cover just keeps growing. At the measuring point above the upper cable car station it's still 220 cm. And though it seems huge to us, it's still a good meter less than the record year 2009. The snow was (and still is) southern, rotten, breaking through practically every step. Worst was between cca. 1000 and 1300 m asl. Even bigger fun was on the return when the sun did its thing and almost no step without sinking at least to the knees. Given the temp and forecast it'll likely be even worse next days. Above cca. 1300 m snow mostly held, even on return. At the hut and lake there was a colorful bunch of walkers, snowshoers and ski tourers. Lake still in ice and snow and probably will be for some time. Views were fantastic, temps almost summery and hard to head back to the valley.

On Saturday (16.02.) my colleague and I set off from Avsa towards Matajur in the morning. First part through the forest was trampled, hardly sinking. After exiting the forest to the end of Pl. Idrsko we were constantly up to our asses in snow. At the junction to Mrzli vrh the path got much better, snow mostly held our weight. From the ridge onwards much less snow, base much harder. On the way back it softened, more sinking. We bypassed the pasture via Mrzli vrh. Path from Avsa to pasture well trampled due to many visitors, from pasture to Matajur summit less.
Weather fantastic, views too. Road to Avsa completely dry. Only mistake was no snowshoes. But we gained fitness velik nasmeh

Today (Thursday) from Vrtovina to Kucelj, back first towards Veliki rob, then along the old road connection from Vrtovina to Trnovska planota to the Srednječavenska path, which I follow to the junction of the direct path to Vrtovin, down which I descend to the starting point. Below the path is wet, muddy, snow starts at 700m. Towards the top it's quite wind-blown, otherwise up to knees in places. Except wildlife (met a herd of mouflon) no one ahead of me, so I broke trail a bit. Worst on descent towards the old road connection to Trnovska planota, where it was quite drifted and I sank twice to my waist, on the road then up to 0.5m. Otherwise pure pleasure and weather ok - bora has stopped.

After Saturday rains and bora, on Sunday morning I looked towards Slavnik. White to Podgorje! I waited for crappy weather and headed to Slavnik from Podgorje on the steep path. The tour was a real "winter" one, sometimes snow to the knees, the path well trodden. Towards the top, where the bora swept the young snow away, barely a cm left. By the hut it was nice to hang out, on the very top icy and windy.
