Dobratsch

Today I ascended to Dobratsch from the place Rute / Hermsberg. The path is nicely maintained and passable without issues.
A few more pictures.

Yesterday I tackled Dobratsch via the technically and physically a bit harder ALOISIASTEIG.

I parked in the forest at Almwirtschaft Schüt (access from Čajna(Nötsch) via Čač(Saak), at the fire station right where the mountain sign also points). Access to Almwirtschaft by car is officially prohibited. zavijanje z očmi

From Almwirtschaft I followed the sign for Alpengarten. It is very misleading as it is marked only with a red dot (medium demanding physically) next to it no warning like "Nur für Geübte!" or similar.

First along gravel then the path branches into the forest. Initially poorly marked, from the rock with ALOISIASTEIG inscription better, at first some knafelc markings (yellow middle), from the memorial plaque (there already first concrete view of the Julian Alps - they get nicer with ascent) then red dots. Not far ahead from that plaque the technically demanding part starts, but not too long. Easier climbing (at start a bit exposed) lasts about 10-15 min then the rock starts to flatten into just very steep path. Such path then brings me to a scree. There need to climb a bit along it (much less demanding than first climb and not exposed) then - markings ran out zmeden What now?

Above on the right I see some wire. I reach it, but to the right where it leads no dot, to the left it's collapsed. But from it I accidentally see marking on the other side of the scree. So the scree destroyed part of the path. I find the most stable (almost solid rock) crossing over it by descending a bit back and traversing. Scree not very wide. Back on markings. From here on they are again a bit sparse but can be found.

Continuing I meet some unnecessary wires (where were they before?!?) then traverse two more screes (first trivial with already made path, second I bypass on top and despite fear immediately find markings ahead). Then a herd of chamois crosses my path and I'm at Aloisiahütte. Actually it's a bivouac.

From it I continue. Until here path was very narrow, now it widens a bit and finally brings me to the wire fence and summit plateau. Cliffs end here, markings too! Where now? Intuitively follow faint track, ascend and descend a bit and see crowds in the distance. Of course at the main path from parking at end of road to summit. I join it too. Nicely greet people in Slovenian and get some Slovenian greetings back. mežikanje

After summit walk and viewing both chapels, descend to Čajna and with bike I left nearby ride to the car, in Čajna on the way back treat myself to a beer! velik nasmeh

ALOISIASTEIG:
DEMANDING MARKED PATH with two sections of easy climbing.

On the mentioned part where scree took the path continue left (marking on rock visible from other side if look well). Carefully cross scree on almost non-crumbly passage a bit below last visible marking! (condition: September, 2011).

HELMET MANDATORY (several times heard rocks loosening)!

We see this mountain from everywhere, which means that today from it we saw everythingnasmeh Most people think of a comfortable walk from a high starting point, but today with PD Medvode we first viewed Dobrač from a frog's perspective completely "from the bottom" and ascended it via its south side, which is not described on these web pages. The start in the town Jurklošter (Arnoldstein) is just a bit over 500 m asl, to there via Korensko sedlo. In the town itself at the large monastery building turn right (police sign also therezavijanje z očmi), then follow good signs for Almwirtschaft, which after ca. 3 km bring us to the Gail river. There is a power plant and the path ends. On foot continue first to the other bank, there left and after some 15 min reach the inn. Continue on the road almost half an hour more, then notice on the right a forest road with a barrier and no-drive sign (only such road there). Here turn right, and ascend gently along it for almost an hour. Then big arrows and cairns push us steeply right up the slope. Here orientation issues fully end, only breathing ones start, as the beautiful path will haul us steeply all the time along Dobrač slopes, alternately between incredible green ridges and spurs and rocky sections and scenic views. To the very summit part of Dobrača you'll rest little, steepness doesn't let up until at about 2000 m we step on the summit plateau. Here from the right also joins the hunter's path from Trate parking. Continue left along the plateau and its edge to reach first the Austrian chapel, a bit further the Slovenian one and next to it remains of our church, built in memory of the great earthquake on Dobrač almost 500 years ago. Here also the summit with cross. From the summit descend some 10 m down to the tower, so characteristic for Dobrač. Here it's clear why it's visible from everywhere, as it's huge. Next to it is a renovated hut offering food and drink, but today so crowded that most didn't want to wait in line. We descended on the road to the so-called Trat (Rosstratte), to which it's possible by car or bus (15€). If your vehicle waits in the valley, then from here on foot along the road to the place of the Alpine garden (Alpengarten) and viewpoint platform, ca. 4 km, where you can view the Red wall, consequence of the mentioned earthquake. A bit after the alpine garden a wooden sign directs you to the footpath right downhill (steep) and brings you to Almwirtschaft, the inn, past which you went at the path start. What to say about the path? It surprised me with its beauty and picturesqueness, offers us a full 5 hours and almost 1700 m of solid ascent, beautiful views, and if the weather is like today's, there are no complaints at all. I recommendnasmeh
In the morning gentle mists were still drifting over Zilje. It must be crossed via the dam to the other side.1
At this point we leave the forest road and the knee-grinder begins2
Still green, but no longer all. Nice path start leads first through the forest3
Also some scree in between, Here the path rises steeply one level higher4
I could calmly carry this home to the atrium. But I don't believe it would be so beautiful...5
alternately among screes ...6
...and (still) green larches and grasses. First trees already glowing7
View of our starting point and Ziljo8
stretched between storm pines, larches and...9
with steep walls that offer a fully alpine feeling10
Nature is really beautiful, by itself11
Natural window along the path12
Here a view opens to the summit of Dobrač, and it takes a good hour more to reach the top13
anything else to add?14
Tower and mountain hut, now almost from the top15
Summit and Slovenska cerkvica below it.16
We return along the road, the backward view shows the entire peak17
In an hour of descent along the road we are at the Trate parking lot, where a huge number of people drive for a Sunday trip.18
Such a view is offered all around. Only Mangart and Jalovec stand out a bit, and all others are lined up in a straight row.19
They ask if we are thirsty... I like it.20

Then that sign at Almwirtschaft is really interesting. No Aloisiasteig up! But for Alpengarten. Probably reach it if go further on forest road, for Aloisiasteig branches path left - markings point there, straight ones I didn't notice.

Anyway Dobrač also to me during this weekend rambling around Mokrine, Ponca and Slemenova špica kept jumping into eyes. velik nasmeh

On top of Slemenova špica some father nicely explained to his son which mountain is what, then son asks: and that big mountain there (looking towards Dobrač). Father couldn't answer that! jezik Slovenian's knowledge, obviously only up to the border! mežikanje

MajaO, do you know what the fences on the 8th pic are for? Maybe because of avalanches? Regards, Ljubica

From all this writing now I don't know at all where in Beljak the turnoff for the Beljaška Alpine Road isrolling eyes.

Lj That fence isn't for beauty but because of the wind, probably so it doesn't blow snow away, maybe so it doesn't make drift work for them at the other end.

I still haven't gotten information on what the conditions for skiing on Dobratsch are like !?!?

@rekar20. 12. 2011 15:53:07
Tose you gotta check with Austrian tourist workers, they'll surely explain what snow conditions are like there, or advise where you can ski

@sla

for skiing there is and isn't winking

Footpath, actually little road, was groomed. Tons of touring skiers, fewer sledders. But for skiing very bad. Off groomed immediately on rocks and grass, no base. And on groomed some turns already pretty gravelly. Maybe could do some zigzags on old ski slope towards Heiligengeist, but even there probably not far and not low.
Need at least one more round, at least one more rolling eyes

@Igor: try map. If coming from your Italy direction or from Korensko sedlo (road 83), drive on along Kärnter Str. A bit after Triglavstr. turnoff which is right, turn right and also sign Villacher Alpenstraße. Turn right but overpass and road goes actually left.
At the black dot is the start. The red circle is Innenstadt = city core.1

@rekar, MajaO, thanks for the info. I always had aversion to "technically defaced" mountains, but Dobratsch has charmed me despite the huge antennas and all those fences. It's really such a friendly, spacious mountain where everyone can find their own path.nasmeh

Our girls say that during holidays it's "not proper" to get up early mežikanje, so today we set off only late morning. Accordingly we had to choose a target - short approach, but still nice and scenic and on their wish to step on snow right from the car nasmeh…We've seen it from so many peaks, but not been on it yet and decision unanimous – off to Dobratsch. Managed to park at the full last parking of Beljaš Alpine Road and headed uphill. No talk of any "catharsis" you experience in solitude and silence... lots of people, from "tourers", snowshoers, sledders to ordinary walkers, which we were too… Tourers of course have no other choice for descent than the ascent path, i.e. the road, for anything else snow too little… About the views on the way and from the top, no words lost….insane, magnificent, grandiose, all around to the horizon…It was so nice that we managed to wander up and down, here and there for a few hours…at the end refreshment in the friendly hut, then just time when sun goes to bed, went to see it once more from the chapel…then in moonlight and stars back to start…Again heard from our girls what we love most…«We liked it very, very much» mežikanjenasmeh...

Path easy, beautiful, suitable for all, even dog buddies. Views fantastic, last part of path over little ridge to the cross wide enough. Quite a few visitors, even on skis, čav...
