Hi,
the time has come when cranes will fly over Slovenia. Maybe you've seen them already... They are huge birds, accordingly very loud. They mostly fly in V-formations and are very loud!
If you spot them, please report the observation.
Interested in location, date, time, number (estimate ok) and flight direction. Photos always welcome. Tip: often seen in afternoon and evening, they fly at night too.
Watch for this natural spectacle and contribute your sightings to knowledge of migration habits of these magnificent northern birds.

The first flocks of migrating cranes are already flying over. From direction Ljubljana towards Škofja Loka (from E to W), at 10:00, about 30 of them. They were quite high and in bad weather, accordingly the pictures are too (both flocks top left).

Yesterday morning around 5-5:30 am, they flew over Topolc near Ilirska Bistrica...couldn't see them...it was still dark...but could hear them very low.

Surely quite a few of you saw/heard loud flocks of cranes today. Please report info on your observation: date, time, place, number of individuals (at least estimate), direction they flew.

Yesterday admiring birds in morning hours in Rovte. Beautiful selection, also pine grosbeak that fly to us from the north.

Today at 15:20 I observed flyover of at least 500 cranes, in S to SW direction over Rošpoh near Maribor.

Hello,
I have a question about bird feeding. Until now I've regularly fed them every winter with sunflower seeds and lard cakes. Great tits, coal tits, sparrows came to feed, the great spotted woodpecker was also a regular guest. This year I made a new feeder because the old one was very worn out and placed it in the same place on the balcony railing. Every year when I started feeding in autumn, birds showed up right away, in a day or two they told each other the feast can start this year nothing... as if cut off, none anywhere. What could be the cause? I'm using the same food I know they like. Don't see them elsewhere in village either, e.g. gorging at some other house. Does anyone have similar experience?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think today around 11:30 above Sorško polje I spotted a flock of cranes (about 25 birds). They were flying towards the northeast.

Little bird!
We feed birds all year at our place and every year we notice that except sparrows, the number of other birds greatly declines. Maybe 3 great tits show up, so far 1 greenfinch. We made a special feeder for the woodpecker too, it hasn't come yet. Three years ago we recorded which birds come and there were 17 species! From woodpecker, bullfinch, siskin, chaffinch, blue tit etc. Hope they still come...

Little bird, as @babim already mentioned the number of many bird species (even sparrows!) is declining. But also consider that in winter birds are quite nomadic and move mainly according to food sources. Possible that in some season more birds stay in an area, in another less. They might come later in winter, so don't give up on feeding
