Hi, which starting point is the most suitable so that the path is tracked in these conditions? Thanks

Lots of snow visible up there. From Učje it's probably tracked.
this is how it looked on Tuesday from Dolec pasture.1

With my companion yesterday again to Stol. This time we started quite late from Breginj. At the top after a short refreshment we decided for descent along the ridge to Muzec. The path with a little caution at a couple of spots is currently manageable without winter gear. From Muzec we descended the direct path, which I must say is really steep. Better recommend descent towards bivouac and then traverse back. Especially when wet. To top it off, in the middle of this steep part an avalanche flattened the path for the length of three switchbacks. That part was safer to bypass on the left side.
Weather was just right for hiking and views.
On the way home rain already before Kobarid and further over Krn already announcing weather change.
After a long time beer again at the table, at Labrci jezik mežikanje

For me the path via Muzca is much nicer, and then along the ridge to Stol, otherwise it extends the tour by a good hour...

After a long time on Stol. Before Breginj I turned right onto a forest path and soon parked. Then my own way through the forest (blackberries) and up steep grasses to the Stol ridge. For steep grasses used crampons and ice axe. On the summit surprisingly no wind. After sunset descended first on steep grasses, then down snowy gully. Sank only a little. So not to get into blackberries again lower down I descended by road instead.

First congratulations, ljubitelj gora, for innovative approach to Stol. Must be interesting feeling to "pick" on the grass nasmeh

I was up there on Sunday. Start right from Učja, via Božca, so the path wasn't too short.mežikanje Conditions solid, in places lots of drifted snow and many works of nature.
Whole day met only 2 hikers who came from Breginj direction.
On summit no wind. Martinčkanje on bench by hut, listening to silence with closed eyes.. Priceless...velik nasmeh

Is there any water source on this ridge on the Slovenian side near the Italian border, or also in Italy? Looking at the map, there might be on the Italian side, don't know how it is in practice. Thanks for info!

Long ago (20 years ago, probably more) I was often on the ridge, one peak or more, depending, for water I remember getting it here. I also slept in the shelter, several times. Water probably still there, maybe someone has more recent info.

And the time has come, third time's the charm as they say, we reached the summit. Because this year in January and February we turned back due to snow that sank too much. Second time we got to planina Božca. First time we turned earlier on the forest path. From Srpenica. Yesterday we decided to go on the path before Žaga that joins higher up the path from Srpenica. Further we knew where to reach the upper path from Učja. Didn't know conditions. Had crampons just in case. Didn't need them. Snow starts beyond the hunting hut. Because wind blew previous days it was blown off. No problems. Actually went on marked path from planina all to summit. Some snowdrifts here and there, nothing special. That hour walk as written to summit took us 10 min more. Great views. And almost no wind. On summit about 8 degrees. Really pleasant in sun on top. Tour not short. 18 km on watch and about 1300m elevation.(24.11.2022)

Nice greetings to all.
Has anyone been on Stol in recent days? Interested at what altitude snow starts (from Kobarid direction) and if it sinks anywhere.
Thanks in advance for reply.

Yesterday we were on Matajur and snow started there quite soon above Avso. View across valley showed bare slopes above Breginj, but on the ridge path you can expect snow everywhere as soon as you climb onto it.
On our path it sank as soon as you stepped off the trodden track, how trodden it is there I can't say.

First-hand info - yesterday on Stol (start Učja).
At beginning snow frozen, above 900m increasingly sinking (though using tracks of predecessors). From Božca on it got a bit annoying. No real trodden path, but without snowshoes you improvise between predecessor tracks and sometimes to wind-blown grassy areas. Hardest were last couple hundred meters, when sinking up to half meter most of time. zavijanje z očmi
Still worth the effort.
Total opposite of crowd last weekend on Komna - met only one hiker. He shortened descent with paraglider. nasmeh

From Breginj first to Stol, then along the ridge to Muzec, bivouac, Nizki vrh and descent to Breginj.
Weather was super - warm and no wind. Southern slope mostly dry, on ridge and north side snow. To Stol winter gear not needed, for continuing ridge westwards I put on gaiters (ice axe and crampons stayed in backpack). Between Stol and Muzec no tracks, so had to work harder through breakable snow and path dragged on. From Muzec onwards tracks and a bit easier. At Veliki Muzec waited for sunset then back to bivouac where I slept. Next morning up again to top of Veliki Muzec and continued along ridge to Nizki vrh, started descent to Breginj and finished nice loop tour. Next time maybe continue along ridge and conquer Breški Jalovec too zavijanje z očmi

The idea came up to conquer Stol directly by road, but Friday evening when I checked those distances a bit, I felt it would be an extremely long journey and we'd surely run out of motivation midway. I haven't seen any such road descriptions anywhere (except cycling ones), and if I did, nothing encouraging.

At village Sedlo we drove almost 1 km higher and started walking the road in foggy morning. It didn't take long for views to open towards Stol, also Krn, Matajur, in distance west Karnic Alps. Meanwhile leaving more and more long serpentines behind, some over 1 km long.
When the road ended for us and a bit before, we stepped into fresh snow, and walking was pure pleasure. Around there opens view to our Julijci and I could almost swear there's no better view. Snowy Kanin mountains, Rombon, Mangart, wonderful Jalovec, Pelci, Triglav and Krn group, in front dry Polovnik ridge, captivated our gazes. At top view of ridge chain, distance Karnics, High Tauern and Dolomites. You find practically everything that exists, much already known and hiked.

On return we went to pl. Božca, where pond looked frozen, of course road snowed, but landscape wonderful. Above us gliding white-headed eagles, which didn't let us leave quickly, though day still short. Seemed we saw also golden eagle and its attack on another eagle.

On path met only one hiker, two a bit off path. On return saw even a car coming towards us.

We figured about 24 km walked, cca 1100 m elevation, and with all stops did one shift. Marked path drawn on zah.JA map shortening all those serpentines, we didn't see.
