Glinščica River Valley - Val Rosandra

Print
katty10. 04. 2012 15:42:07
On holiday Monday we headed to, for Slovenes quite a hidden corner, the Glinščica River Valley. And what did we seenasmeh...little pools with hardly any water, then vertical walls above which somewhere goats longed for pastures, centuries-old ruins of an aqueduct, and the wonderful stone church of St. Mary at Peči, and some ruins of a castle and more and moremežikanjevelik nasmehnasmeh.
We started in front of the France Prešeren Cultural Home in Boljunec. The path led us past a small hamlet above Boljunec. At one of the viewpoints we admired Trieste and the Trieste Gulf, then trudged on towards Vrh Griža. There first-class view awaits of the Trieste Gulf, part of Slovenian coast and all the way to Slavnik. Here we notice some ruins that give these places a magical and mysterious touch. There are so many paths and signs that you can hardly decide on the wayeek. Good we met some compatriots on the way who pointed the path to each other a bit. Slowly we reached the ridge from which the waterfall and the centuries-old church were nicely visible, in front of which there were quite a few people, so we didn't even think about solitude and peace. Here we nicely picnicked and looked around. The Karst edge was nicely visible, along which Hribovc walked last time with companymežikanje, and rocky walls below it where some were climbingeeknasmeh, and old railway line, and real caves,... I personally couldn't wonder enough at the fact that this famous church lies here and a few houses below itvelik nasmeh. Then we headed towards the pools to see the waterfall as close as possible. First we descended scree, then slowly ascended along the bed to the desired waterfall, which falls from about 40m high cliff. As Lidija wrote last time, this time too the waterfall was like a trickle. Probably no rain here for some timemrk pogledeek. Back we returned along the bed or above it. The path is quite exposed in places, so the rope served its purposemežikanjenasmeh. The closer to the mountain hut Refugio Mario Premuda, the more people and crowds (some refreshed in the river or its pools). There we refresh and strengthen, then to the starting point which was really packed.

Another super trip/hike behind menasmeh. Wonderful weather, good company, valley oh so supermežikanjenasmehvelik nasmeh. Thanks everyone.
the path leads us to Vrh Griže1
already after a few steps we notice this cavern...we didn't peek, we just went straight ahead2
at Vrh Griže a beautiful view of Tržaški zaliv awaits us3
ruins of the old watchtower on Vrh Griže4
Nice spot this pine has chosen :-))5
This little bush really caught my eye, I had to show it :-)6
Lonely houses, the village is apparently called Botač...they lie above the waterfall7
Karst edge, below it the old railway8
These walls pose such a great challenge to climbers...there are masses of such walls in this area9
Part of the railway line Hrpelje-Kozina-Trst10
Little church of St. Mary na Pečeh...behind the path we returned on11
The ridge along which we came12
View back...those are not ruins, but a monument to Triestine alpinist Emilio Comici (who killed himself nearby)13
This is how the waterfall looks from afar....14
View back towards the little church15
On the path, SPD Trst markers for the Vertikala hiking trail also accompanied us16
Little pools17
and the waterfall up close...although there's little water, it's still nice18
There's plenty of water in these pools19
we had to climb a bit too to see the waterfall closer20
Rocky masses above the Glinščica river.21
Those goats are almost like chamois and ibex, because they grazed so high above the abyss :-)22
View back.23
Nicely shaped pools :-))24
There's not much water, but it's still nice... and quite peaceful here.25
Remains of the Roman aqueduct.26
Well, we're back at the starting point... upon return the parking lot was packed full.27

You made a very nice trip and also took nice photos. But I have some remarks. Namely, on the second photo there's a cave by the path, on the fourth photo remains of a guard post by (former) border, on the seventh photo village Botač, on the eleventh photo church of St. Mary at Peči (not Pečine), on the thirteenth photo not ruins but monument to Trieste alpinist Emilio Comici (who died nearby) and on the sixteenth photo mark of SPD Trieste, marking the alpine path "Vertikala". Otherwise LidijaJesih wrote the names correctly...No hard feelings, my remarks are well-intentioned and nice day!

Finger stopped again on Glinščica, weather there also showed it would hold (and it did). Since nice world corners need to be shown to dear persons, we drove today via Socerb to Boljunec. Picturesque little town already offers plenty of things where the eye stops. Right at mountain hut we turn right into the slope on path no.1, which brings us after an hour to viewpoint, but not the one where I've been. A little further from the known is summit with PZS logbook, called Mali Kras. On top there are ruins for a whole village and nice view on Gulf of Trieste, which reaches to our coast. We descend past Vrh Griž and quickly turn again toward mountain hut down, then on path marked 13 climb to Comici monument. Really nice viewpoint on Glinščica valley, which from this angle looks like big canyon. After steep bit we descend to Mary on Rocks church, then continue on lower walking path past waterfall. We also descend to top of waterfall and along the water walk to Botač, small village where today buffet is even open and lady speaks Slovenian. Then again uphill, this time to other side, to old railway track, along which we walk some kilometer and leave it after second tunnel at marks again. We step to one more viewpoint so eyes embrace the walked path, then back down from viewpoint to Boljunec. For goodbye a mask helps us, just as befits carnival Saturday.

The old times when there was a passage here are still somewhat visible, but now it's just a memory17
the little church is really photogenic18
tunnel on the old railway line closed in 1958, now paradise without cars and traffic19
nice view of the already traversed section, the ridge above the little church to the monument is especially visible20
towards the start from the last viewpoint, right below it we took the descent21
A little while ago we were up there.22
Over this little bridge and the sausage was skewered.23
Boljunc is a nice little town.24
And another one for carnival Saturday - masks were everywhere. For a change, real ones.25

Maja, there's lots of useful information for everyone who wants to know more in your description on page 1. Dejboz, this variant altogether good four hours of comfortable wandering. But the path can be shortened or lengthened as desired, the question is only how many times you want to go up and down from the valley. I probably haven't gone the same path yet, though I've been there a few times. nasmeh Ben : velik nasmeh

It looks like I'm always here, but it's really nice. Especially when it's getting cold higher up or cloudy weather is forecast. You really can come here often, on different paths with different difficulties. From alpinism to poodle walking, from cycling to via ferrata it offers. We went on a short ferrata, so there was plenty of time at home to write more about Glinščica. If anyone's ever interested in this interesting almost-Slovenia area, there's some collected in one place.

February, time for Glinščicavelik nasmeh. From the posts you can see I'm here every now and then. Haven't gone the same path yet. At least some branch or direction is different. Last year at the top of Mali Kras (or Vrh Griž, as noted in the logbook) I noticed Socerb written on a pine. This year we went to see it up close. So we parked at Socerb Castle, which by the way is an SPP point, from where the path descends to Osp. It's also a great viewpoint on Koper, Milje, Trieste bays and more, I think I even saw Venice. In the back white backdrop of Dolomites, Carnics and Julians. Path start is unmarked but the only possible if not going to Osp. Nicely along the edge behind the castle. After a while markers appear. Path is scenic, leads past paraglider takeoff to Mali Kras. From there we continued on marked path but at first opportunity followed blue markers left. They lead to Italian markers (path no. 1), which via steep zigzags over scree descend to Glinščica valley. We exit practically in front of M. Premuda hut, below 100m asl. Then we took the nice walking path through the canyon, past the beautiful, today flowing waterfall, under the church and Comici monument, to Botač. There in the small village inn, open as it says until sunset, we treated ourselves to coffee, beer and carrots, then returned to the waterfall. On the way we met cheerful group from PD Iskra and chatted a bit. After waterfall we climbed steep path first to church of St. Mary on the Rock, then to Comici monument and higher to the saddle. Signs then guided us to viewpoint above Kroglje, from there another good half hour and we were back at Socerb. Castle opens at noon (weekends), so we could step onto its walls. And since we were there, we stopped a bit below the castle and looked at the Holy Cave, the only underground church around here. From outside only, as it's locked, guided tour supposedly Sunday at 14:00. So, picturesque day, path too. 14 km isn't bad either.

Hello Lidija! I also enjoy wandering in and around Glinščica. But I'd have one question. On your picture 16 above Trieste you can see a mighty white building. Do you maybe know what
it is.
Thanks and many more hiking pleasures.

vetrc, hope this helps nasmeh
Leave Primorska motorway at Kozina exit and at junction continue towards Krvavi potok, soon crossing state border. Continue through Pesek / Pese village. Soon on left see sign for Val Rosandra / Glinščica, turn sharp left and continue to San Lorenzo / Jezero village, where you can park at one of the parking lots. Suggest parking just after village on left, where a few meters away is viewpoint with wonderful view of Trieste bay. Walk road to branch for Bruno Biondi ferrata; about 5 min walk.

We decided to pop into Italy after work, more precisely towards Glinščica river valley above Trieste, to stretch a bit and enjoy climbing ferratas. First Čez Nos for warm-up, then to Bruno Biondi. Really pleasant climbing, even nicer because sun gently caressed us while climbing velik nasmeh. View towards Trieste and sea is of course the best. Couple of yesterday's pics:
