Hiking boots

Years ago they changed soles like crazy, too fast wear.
Recently Riko at the sawmill told me they only put on Meindl gojzarje for heavy and dangerous work in the woods, which last hell and half, LOWA only for showing off velik nasmeh
First Meindl Gore-Tex from 1986, still intact in one piece1

But twenty years ago the Kamnik woodcutter Cene, who was already 96 then, told me that with such gojzarji you dare go to the foresters' dance in high heels, but for the bushes the most durable are iron-shod wooden clogs, like those used for centuries there. Cene was a legend, died at 104 when in sneakers he chased a young shepherdess and slipped on cow dung. Broke his hip, then classic, pneumonia got him ... Even on his deathbed he yelled that he would never wear anything but clogs again. And if you've noticed, since then doctors in hospitals often wear clogs too. Cene was really a legend, even if he didn't know viharnik

To someone deciding on their first hiking boots I wouldn't immediately advise which brand to buy. Many come for a brand because of such advice, leave with uncomfortable boots they sell after one use. Even "old" experts who say it must be Vibram because otherwise they slip, or must be waterproof because they once got wet in the rain, makes no sense.
I'd advise everyone to think where they'll hike with them, then try as many different types and models as possible and listen a bit if they run into a good salesman, to what he says. That way one learns best what suits them and what doesn't and thus most likely buys the right boots for themselves. More on segmentation of hiking boots, suitability for different uses depending on boot type in the post hiking boots.

Martin, this one is way off. Especially that about the salesman.

Why? I mean, if he runs into a good one, though I agree that someone without much experience can hardly distinguish if the salesman advises or just sells what he wants to sell.

Hi,

I need help.
I'm buying new winter hiking boots; I really need advice from someone with a bit more knowledge on this.

I need boots for trekking around Annapurna (about 20 days).
but I wouldn't want to buy boots I couldn't use later because too stiff or whatever. Later I plan to use them normally in Slovenian mountains and surroundings.

Hi,

Trango Alp hold up nicely in combination with semi-automatic crampons (like winter gojzar) and also perform well on dry terrain without problem.

If you'll use gojzar only for summer ascents (dry) then cheaper models come into consideration too...

Hi Gaucho, if you're buying boots for trekking around Annapurna, I recommend a lighter version of the boot, as most of the trekking is done on dry ground. Exception is just some pass that might be snowy. The boot should be comfortable, since you'll wear it practically all day, only afternoon or evening change to something lighter (sneakers, tevice, crocs,,,). These two models you're showing are already a bit higher end. I practice with two pairs of boots: one heavier, compact for winter ascents, others lighter for summer approaches.
Trekking boot should be stiff enough, but not too much. I like it to cover the whole ankle, so I can reduce injury risk. With lighter boots pay attention to the sole, that it's good quality, seams strong-double, that we can properly protect the leather, that it offers at least some protection from moisture. Don't forget extra, spare laces.
I did trekking below Everest and over some passes in lighter Alpinina hiking boots into which I added a thinner cork insole, which provided extra thermal protection, and I felt fewer stones on the path. If anything else interests you, just ask, if not, send message to ZS.

Hi Gaucho,
I don't know Salewa boots that well, so I can't comment on them. As for the Trango Alp boot, let me warn you it already has quite a stiff sole. I don't know the conditions on this trekking, but from the pics I looked at and what en-goldy wrote, maybe Trango Trek, which is softer, would suffice, and Iglu has it on sale now, so you're 100€ better off compared to Trango Alp. I emphasize that I don't know this Annapurna tour and don't know the conditions you're hiking in.
Also, Trango Trek is meant for universal crampons and not semi-automatic like Trango Alp.
In this price range, La Sportiva also has the Trango Guide model, which is probably worth attention, but I don't know it myself.

Best.

I'm interested where in Slovenia I could buy Meindl-brand mountaineering boots? Also interested in experiences with Meindl Air Revolution 3.5 Lady boots? And where in Slovenia do they sell Bridgedale Coolmax socks?

Thanks

Meindl are extremely good boots, but for slightly wider feet.

Yeah, as far as I've heard, they're not what they used to be. For an average hiker, they're still fine.

@remolog

You can get them also in Srna store on Bloška polica. Even with defect, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know what the prices are or which models are available, since I haven't been there for a long time. No experiences except with some low leather ones.
