Jalovec

Today I went from Tamar over Kotovo sedlo to Jalovec. From Kotovo sedlo to summit quite dense fog, so the fixed protections were wet. Fog up to about 2600m, summit nice sunny weather.
Descended via Jalovško škrbino to Tamar.
Regards Rok.

Not possible by car, you have to leave it in Planica

Today I was by car in Tamar. Before the barrier it says the road is open from 18:00 to 6:00 and from 12:00 to 14:00. At the exit between 12:00 and 14:00 you should pay parking fee.
Today no parking fees were collected.

Fantastic, last year I did the same route, this year I'll do it again, probably this weekend. Personally I think maybe from Kotovo sedlo to the summit there are too few protections for the less experienced.nasmeh

I'm wondering if anyone has been to Jalovec these days?
What are the conditions like. Do you have to leave the car already in Planica??
Thanks and best regards.

I'm also interested how it's possible these days to head to Jalovec via the glacier. If anyone has any info please post it - thanks in advancenasmeh

Why complicate it so much? Complete gear with you and go... And of course; ONLY FOR EXPERIENCED!!

Hi, on Sunday we went through the glacier. Normal, with all winter gear! Of course only to Planica by car - to Tamar nicely groomed xc tracks (please go to Tamar on the pedestrians' path!) To the glacier entrance well packed no crampons needed, from the cave under the bivouac shelter when it steepens a bit crampons on and axe in hand, above all helmet tight! It was drafty through and small rock and ice missiles flying. Otherwise super conditions, snow compact, bit icy here and there but safe passage. At exit sun greets you and wind-scoured cornice in arc - wonderful - straight on it like riding it. Careful steps! Those who went to the top said from the ledge up also some rocks and ice so extra care there.
Some skiers and boarders did a few nice lines through the glacier! In short nice but freezing cold day uphill! Otherwise as my predecessor said: With will, with pleasure and full gear - let's gas!
nice day Spela

Thanks for useful info, but were you at Jalovec summit?
And maybe some pic for better idea

We weren't at the top but there were quite a few and as said they warned about the ice and rock combo - greater caution needed. For sure now it's a completely different picture of the conditions - especially after this thaw!
Well, no pics unfortunately, but it's true that two lads approached us to photograph us and asked if they could send them to us by mail later, but no pics anywhere.... Anyway, lads from the ice cave (one with skis, other with board - names remain unknown), if reading this please send us the pics. Super thanks velik nasmeh
Otherwise just foot under the path and prudent!
nice day spela

Hi; on Sunday my mate and I headed for Jalovec. We left the car at Planica; and set off. Already at the pitstop (read tea) at the Tamar hut they warned us that the previous evening a big avalanche came down from the saddle and conditions were not exactly good. But since it was a nice sunny day, we decided to try anyway. Already after about half an hour's walk from the hut avalanches started from both 'left and right', besides the snow started sinking nicely - given that there were no tracks ahead of us... Well, soon after we reached the foot below the saddle and persisted to about halfway, where it was sinking even 'over the knee'; and finally turned back amid constant avalanches (ice axe and crampons help nothing),... On the way back we met a couple of 'skiers and boarders', who soon also turned (skied down) into the valley... Despite the unconquered goal the trip was really super, Jalovec will have to wait a bit more. 'It won't go anywhere'nasmeh cheers

Well done lads! Finally someone who knows how to turn back in time and realizes that the mountain always waits: it's right there and one day allows us to step on its summit. And despite that, you were satisfied with the achieved. Good luck!

I'm wondering how much snow is still there towards Jalovec and which approach you recommend.
Thanks; LP

Snow varies a lot depending on which direction you want; if for example from Loška Koritnica over Škrbina behind Grad there's still a huge amount, if from Trenta less, sometimes the nasty last pitch under Goličica wall, over V. Ozebnika then at Jezercih, also from Tamar there's still a huge amount in Ozebnika, over Kotovo sedlo then in individual gullies. I recommend that you stay home, unless you go somewhere else up. Nothing can be recommended. Jalovec even when dry is not exactly innocent.

Triglavski, I join your wise advice. Also I, viharnik, would avoid the current situation in the mountains with snow, because snow doesn't give support, it's quite slippery, so you don't know where to step. Use of crampons is quite limited, ice axe on steep sections sometimes is not enough... Sun will soon do its thing, then off to the skyscrapers of Slovenian peaks! LP-Rok.nasmeh

Thanks for the replies, that's what interested me, if there's still a lot of snow. I know snow is slippery now, that's why I was interested how much is still on the path. We'll go to something lower...... LP

To the hut under Špička I would go via Planina Zapotok. How well is the path marked?zmeden

This would be quite a detour, almost twice as long and the ascent time would increase even more. I doubt you know the passages from Zapotok pasture to the path leading from Kanjski preval over Sredenca to Konjski Preval and when you get there you're still quite low under Špička. Very unusual variant for ascent. Well some go a bit around and not directly up. To Zapotok it's well marked, further to Kanjski preval also, the rest you have to know because the marks disappear, and the descent from Konjski preval is sometimes tricky.

To pl. Zapotok and further to Kanjski preval I know, there I went to Bavški Grintavec. From Kanjski preval to under Špička I don't know. Such variant is because of circular tour. From under Špička to Jalovec, descent to Vršič and hitchhike back to the car. To me the tour seems interesting, maybe better in reverse direction.
