Today 19.02.2008 nice weather and not too cold. From Bašelj village to Košuta hospital and on to Kališče. Towards the top I fitted crampons, as the path was icy and dangerous. At Kališče completely alone. When going to Bašeljsko sedlo a young guy overtook me - driving in fifth gear. Went to Storžič.
Let me say, crampons are essential especially downhill as ice under leaves in places and invisible. When you realize it, you're already on your ass—in the best case. So boldly crampons on boots and to the valley.

Anyway, I don't know why so much dilemma (on the forum) crampons or not, winter gear is just a necessary evil in the mountains in winter, whether we need it or not! Clear?

Maybe because of many Sunday hikers and slips, since every winter despite warnings in the media and various forums too many accidents happen in the mountains. Maybe because of these and similar, warnings are never superfluous.

Yes gear must be, I had even with crampons yesterday (19.2) some problems on ascent to Storžič. Old cap, at approx what time were you at Bašeljsko sedlo?

Today cold, but nice. Warmed up on short tour to Kališče despite cold forecast for alpine region. Morning suddenly in car at Preddvor -8°C vs Ljubljana 0°C. Roads icy, hence such goal. Path to Kališče quite visited, nicely trodden. By snow depth snow line here 1400-1500m, where vs lower 10-20cm, about 1m+. Above old solid base bears man, on it 20cm powder. Path to Bašeljsko sedlo old track but now snow-covered. Further single track. Top morning -11°C. For visitors descent now after snow much better than before but still icy spots. Recommend 4-point insteps. Lots of guests, in hut accordion already playing merrily. Best-Rok.

Today was really a nice day for such destinations like Kališče, had to break trail a bit, and snow was piling up like crazy Tomaž and I got up there around 16:00. Since there was a shovel under the terrace and we knew the caretaker comes up in the evening as the hut is open on weekends, we also cleared the stairs and terrace in front of the entrance. So we at least made his job a little easier

Sometimes it's funny when you drive to the sun but it starts with rain and snow. So it was in Mače today and the damn wet kept persisting and persisting... It stopped only a bit above the pasture where everything changed. It cleared up and suddenly it was even warm. But that's just in passing, mood at least mine hasn't depended on weather for long. Path is tracked, not icy, although small crampons down low aren't superfluous for comfort, and of course crowded as befits Kališče with Kljuke. Ideal choice for all who don't snowshoe, don't skin and don't like sinking in. Yeah snowshoeing is obvious and since couldn't rent them this week: all pre-booked.

I called really many times, also on Saturday
and Sunday. Also on the landline as Ben suggests. Also email. I imagined
they take the mobile down to the valley during the week.
But doesn't matter. Simply interested in
conditions from the Hut onward to Storžič.
Would like to avoid breaking trail, which locals

We were on November 1. Warm in front of and in the hut. Friendly caretaker, good jota. You can get it without meat and really one without cooked meat. Full praise. Will come again.
