I went last year to the logging yard. That means about 100 meters from Belca towards Kranjska Gora turn right to the north. Nice but gravel, half-forested road through the tunnel brings you to 1000 m above sea level (logging yard). With the car you can reach the Austrian border 15 minutes before the Jeprca place, where there is also the Austrian bivouac. From the yard to the top of Kepa good 3 hours walk, from Jeprca one hour less. The path is somewhat more demanding in the last part.

As was said, the road is not the best but you can get to the top without problems, where there is a parking lot. From there to the top of Kepa it's about 1.5 hours of moderate, not too demanding walking.

Nice greetings. On Friday or Sunday I'd like to go to Kepa, I'm interested if there's still some patch of snow holding somewhere on the path and if the road above Belca is passable/barrier open? Thanks in advance

Today I looked at it from Jerebikovec and it didn't look like there was still snow up there. As for the road, I recommend taking a bike with you, which will help if the barrier is closed. You know barriers are there for a reason.

I'm interested in what the current path to Kepa is like and if there are any peculiarities.

On Saturday my wife and I went to Kepa, left the car at the barrier - it's open - but with a warning that it will be closed on return. The path is OK all the way to the top. Markings would be good when you reach the road the third time, to clearly show the direction right along the road to the saddle. On return went along the road which is excellently maintained and knee-friendly. Met only one pair of hikers from the saddle onwards and at the top full of Austrians.

My husband and I also went to Kepa yesterday, have to admit it's very poorly marked. We went up along the road from the barrier onwards, which is quite a long way, then from the bivouac to Kepa, which is a very nice and scenic path, shame only that the weather played tricks on us: hail, rain, wind, hail... But at the top beautiful view in all directions. We'll return.

Maybe a bit awkwardly marked at the start, but later quite OK - cross the stream and go along the path on the left slope to the bivouac in a good hour. Nice to repeat the trip - if anyone knows the path over Kurjeke would recommend. lp. Franci

Today I headed to panoramic Kepa, barely any snow. Started at Erjavčev rov, over Brvog, past Plevelnica along ridge over Mala Kepa to top. Path I took one of most comfortable overall, if we except path by Dolgih Njiv to Košutnikov turn and some paths in Tolmin area. No leg lifting every step like army. Lower calm, higher windy and increasingly cold! Met some chamois that wanted to our side with plenty of grass, but after every pass-by fled to Austrian precipices. Top some of ours, majority Austrian columns with easy access. Lower back spotted huge roe deer. Motionless sat on large stump. First thought someone left skin-trophy. On searching for camera it finally moved, about 120 kg. At hunting hut ate mackerel and kefir, then to valley. Total 5 hours, forecasters really goofed this time!

I haven't been to Kepa recently, but the path is dry, with no snow patches. I don't know the condition of the fixed protections, but I'm almost sure the path is completely safe.

On Sunday I was on Kepa; like in many places in the Karavanke there was fog here too, so no views at all. To Sedlič (11 km) you can go by car, the road is fine. Further to the top I needed 1 hour and 20 min. The path is ok, just be careful not to dislodge rocks.

Unlike panoramik's trip, the views on the last October Saturday were excellent like everywhere else. From Olševa in the east to distant Antelaa and Marmolada in the southwest for me. North side cold wind, a few steps away on our sunny side short-sleeve conditions.

For two years I've been looking for an answer: if someone perhaps knows the name of the peak or mountain on the right side of the third picture, where a cross also stands. If someone knows, please reply. LP Andrej

Andrej, I don't know the name, but I asked the Austrians what it is there and they told me it's the forepeak of Austrian Kepa, as it probably already lies on their territory.

Yesterday evening I took the time to browse the net hoping to find the answer but... No idea, on some Austrian site I even found that it's Mittagskogel, but that doesn't hold because it's the peak with a metal cross; something is also mentioned about Koroška Kepa and little Kepa (i.e. Mittagskogel). I've been up there twice, but my hard disk crashed in between and all pics were lost; I don't even remember if the summit has a logbook (I think yes, so it has a name). I'll contact two colleagues and if I find out, I'll let you know. LP.

That cross is actually Kepa (forepeak), which you reached by the path that matta walked. I think it's quite clear that it's the same mountain.

Probably it's really just a smaller peak in the Kepa ridge. Despite the presence of the cross (which in this case is supposed to represent the summit of an independent mountain) this is definitely not an independent mountain I found no special name on any map or website. Koroška little Kepa is on the western ridge, Dovška little Kepa on the eastern. For me it's the northern forepeak of Kepa.

Somewhere I read that the topographic criterion for naming a peak is its relative height. Relative height means the rise of the peak above its surroundings. A "real" peak is considered one with at least 50 meters of relative height. The debated peak definitely doesn't have such relative height relative to the Kepa ridge. Nevertheless, there are many peaks with relative height less than 50m that are still named. Anyway, if anyone knows and tells us the name of this peak or subpeak, we'll be happy
