Excellent post n3jc. Ppegan....your claim that they obey you won't hold. We met months ago on a hiking path and your vizsla was jumping on me. Otherwise I observe that some really torture dogs in the mountains.

N3jc, good post, I sign under it. Every owner knows what his dog is like and accordingly it should be on a leash or not. Definitely the dog must be on a leash if aggressive, disobedient or non-compliant. I always meet a person or dog so that my two are next to me or are trained to come next to me themselves when they see someone approaching. Both in the mountains and in the valley. Of course the leash is always at hand if needed. In all years of going to the mountains, I have had no problems, not on the paths we walked, not with the people we met (we've met hunters, TNP rangers and even police officers, and no one has bothered me about loose dogs like some of you do here ) and not in mountain huts where we slept. Interesting, isn't it And1, where are we supposed to have met? I surely know my vizsla didn't jump on anyone, since I never allow it or I trained her out of it when she was small. Please write where this incident is supposed to have happened? In the future, just bravely say hi when we meet, instead of writing untruths here

Sometimes we had such discussions at parent-teacher meetings.

N3jc, similar experience where the leash saved the dog's life. Winter on Nanos, sugary snow. Under my weight the crusts were breaking through, but not for the dog, and at one point it slipped...would definitely have ended in the abyss.

Some GRS guy told me they went on a rescue where the dog on leash pulled the owner or, if memory serves, the female owner into the abyss, sadly no help for her anymore. I think that wasn't the only case of such accident, just in the other the owner luckily survived. So again pros and cons of the leash.

The leash is not just for keeping the dog away from people, but also from wild animals it might attack. It can be ever so friendly to people, but different towards animals. And ultimately also from dangers to itself, as predecessors mentioned. Wild animals can attack the dog too. Dog can run into a snake, ..., ... There are plenty such cases and dangers lurking for the dog. Dog is not a mountaineer or hiker but just an animal with instincts. That no authority warns about the leash is of course again a Slovenian specialty or thinking it's not such a big violation. Yeah, in the city police overlook cyclists not having lights on at night, riding on the wrong side of the path, ..., saw with my own eyes a cop not even twitching at such violations. And we know both can be quite dangerous. Dogs are basically not allowed in huts, but of course that's violated. But many caretakers are strict, so @ppegan surely got rejected somewhere. Especially abroad. In Italy they apparently tolerate dogs in dining rooms and lower areas sometimes, never in sleeping quarters. That case (or similar) you mention happened about 10 years ago on Planjava. First, the girl supposedly strayed off the marked path onto pathless terrain, and second had the dog tied to herself. Which is complete nonsense of course. Would comment on @N3jca too, whom I agree with otherwise. But defending the dog isn't always the best idea, as we can get bitten too. Better to release the dog from leash (yeah, that's why not tied), especially if it's a wild animal. There were cases where e.g. a wild boar attacked the dog, owner didn't release it and got bitten himself. Best is to have some defense means for that. Pepper spray, for which I've been spat on here countless times, can be very useful also for dog defense, lately I carry an ultrasonic repeller too. It's friendlier to dogs but not 100% and question if it works on wild animals. On larger ones probably pepper spray is questionable too (there's special for bears, which foresters have e.g.). Then really best to release the dog. Our life is worth more than the dog's.

Polona, in Repov kot that case was about 15 years ago. Possible it's not the only one.

Shame the question by n3jc was overlooked. @Stoick I'm also curious how the little dog crossed that ladder part in these snow conditions and the exposed traverse under Mala Kepa, where there are also some ladders?

@jbs, the little dog needed help twice for about two meters, first on ascent from first notch, second right on descent, probably on traverse under little Kepa.

14.4.2024 Start from Belca. Trail dry up to approx. 150-200 height meters below summit - when it turns right, crosses quite a few snow patches. I continued from there directly towards the cross on dry ground. Return via Gubno and Kurjekov to Dovje and then by road to start. Snow only left on saddle between Kepa and Dovška Mala Kepa, but can bypass it without issues.

Hello. What do you think (or better if someone knows specifically), will the trail from Erjavčev rovt direction be fully dry these days? I admit I've never been to Kepa and don't know the path. Specifically don't know what about that part on the ridge that goes briefly on the north side. Can it be bypassed in case of snow?

Tomco, I went on this trail on 5.5. and regarding snow no issues, probably even more of it has melted since.

Today on Kepa via normal route from Erjavčev rovt and also Gubno on the way back. First time in these parts. Wonderful and varied path. Although usually not among adrenaline tours, Karavanke never disappoint with their landscapes. Maybe a bit short tour just up and down, but that can sometimes be an advantage too. No snow anymore. Also temperature-wise conditions today were really summery. Otherwise quite some visitors today. Road to E. rovt OK, except at two spots need to watch with lower car.

Today on Kepa, wonderful sunny day, on return a bit of rain. Trail is crumbly in some parts.
