Košuta ridge still in snow except some grassy slopes. Take gaiters and ice axe!

Yesterday we spent a beautiful Sunday on Kofce and Veliki vrh. Besides friendly and good service, the meadows higher behind the hut are worth mentioning as they are literally covered in crocuses. Spring has come to Kofce but as Viharnik mentioned the path to V. vrh still requires much caution. If we do not choose the higher path along the edge, it is necessary to cross the grassy slope. Caution is also not superfluous on sections of the path without snow as they are very soggy. When walking, the ground sinks and slips off the path. So be careful and much enjoyment on the path to all who are heading there in the coming days. nasmeh

On Sunday I want to go to Veliki vrh. Was anyone up there last week? What are the conditions? Still snow?

On south side of Vel.Vrh no snow anymore but can hit narrow patches between slope ribs.

On Veliki vrh Wednesday 20.5.2009 from Kofce. Some snow only on saddle no problems. Snow on north at summit otherwise scree on much of ridge. Along ridge to Kladivo down to Škrbina then to Pungrat alpine pasture. Avalanche took some path here need to find crossing to pasture. Good luck!

As far as I could see from the road, the whole Košuta is bare of snow.

No snow neither on the north nor on the south side. The climbing route from Korošica is also bare.

The hut on Kofce is known far and wide, so I can't write anything scientific. Maybe about snow depth. In places where snow is drifted, the snow cover is up to half a meter thick, elsewhere much less. I'll try to add some today's pics.

The morning view from the highway to the cloudy and misty Julijce, where we were headed, was not promising at all. So we quickly changed the plan and turned off the highway at the Ljubelj exit. Now the targets are Kofce and Veliki vrh in Košuta. The road to Matizovec is bare, the path to Kofce is fully snowy. Thanks to the fairly high temperature, the path was just thawed enough, not icy. We soon arrived at Dom na Kofcah. We were just discussing whether to make a short stop or continue to Veliki vrh when we spotted one returning down to the hut. We waited for him and asked about the conditions. He told us he didn't reach even half the way because it sinks strongly on the path, almost to the waist in places. Well, we are not big masochists, so we believed him and didn't even try to go further. Instead, we enjoyed at the hut, finally after a long time in complete calm without wind and in the warm sun. The thermometer at the hut showed 13 degrees in the shade. It was a bit short, but still nice.

Nice sunny morning accompanied us on Sunday 28. 3. 2010 on the drive to Ljubelj, as we were headed to Kofce. At Matizovec there were already quite a few cars parked. We quickly changed shoes, prepared and set off. Although Nives was only on her first tour this year, she performed well. After a good hour of walking we were at the hut. There were several visitors in front of the hut and inside it. Nevertheless, we were able to sit on the nicely cleaned benches in front of the hut and surrender to the warm sun rays. Some headed further towards Veliki vrh, but not many. I went towards the cross and further to Kofce gora. Since I didn't intend to go to any peak, I turned after about 30 minutes and returned to the hut. The snow, south-facing due to the strong sun, sank considerably. After a good snack we said goodbye to the friendly warden and happily headed down to the valley. I hope there will be many such nice days this year too. velik nasmeh

View through the window in the Ljubljana basin yesterday morning didn't promise much. But at Tržič it was already completely different and "the weather cleared". With dad we parked in Podljubelj and walked to Matizovec. The road is plowed to the farm. Nice track made to Kofce. There were quite a few touring skiers. No one went to Veliki vrh (someone boldly skied from the side ridge in the lower part), the ridge looks like on Ando's photo! Great day, spiced up by a joyful puppy that was throwing itself into the deep snow in front of the hut.

Has anyone been to Kofce recently? I'm interested if the road to Matizovec is passable or how far you can drive by car?

Yesterday on Kofce, ski touring ascent to the cross. For now, you can skin up to the starting point at Matizovec, or even lower despite the recent thaw.

On Saturday the road to Matizovec was plowed, but without 4x4 you couldn't get to the farm. A couple of hikers and touring skiers made a track to the hut under Kofce gora, further on Andrej and I engaged our "own plow". The snow cover on the trail is variably deep, right below the hut it is windpacked to the ice base. It was windy at the hut, higher up the wind calmed. Gorgeous sunny weather, thick layer of clouds in the valley. When we returned, the road to the farm was already almost bare, as the salt had done its job.
