Komna

On 11.2.2015 I headed on a two-day trip to Komna in search of snowshoe pleasures. I started walking from Hotel Zlatorog in Ukanc, where the bus dropped me off. Rising morning mists tempted me to Lake Bohinj, where I spent nearly an hour admiring the awakening morning. So I arrived at Komna too late for a longer trip and went only to Planina Govnjač. Path to Komna well compacted and nicely smoothed by numerous skiers. Snow from slopes above path mostly slid down, but avalanche cracks heard in the ridge of Upper Bohinj Mountains already in morning. Further to Planina Govnjač still untouched white (or sun erased previous tracks). Extremely warm weather and cloudless clarity softened snow well, but with snowshoes sank mostly no more than 10 cm.

Snow about a meter deep, so mostly bush tops visible and not such wide white expanses as last year. http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?slo=1&gorovjeid=1&id=5829&stran=1

After pleasant stay at Dom na Komni, where friendly keepers took good care of me, next day continued to Bogatinsko sedlo.

What are the conditions like towards Bogatinsko sedlo and further to Lanževica and loop back through Lepa Komna. Is anything trodden.

I planned to Lanževica, but only reached Bogatinsko sedlo. Detailed report follows. Larger group of skiers went ahead to Lanževica. From Koča pod Bogatinom fresh snowshoe track over Lepa Komna. Towards Bogatinsko sedlo trampled another 0.5 hours beyond Koča pod Bogatinom. Without snowshoes sinking 0.5 m and more.
Also towards the Seven Lakes and Kojnsko sedlo no tracks yet. I believe skiers have pulled tracks these days to help snowshoers too. Snow conditions now probably completely different, couple days no sun melting snow, and new snowfall forecast.

Today partially circular tour Savica - Komna - Bogatinsko sedlo - Mahavšček - Govnjač pasture - Komna - Savica. Conditions excellent, trail nice, no snow anywhere. Not many visitors, due to great views, easy orientation and simplicity I highly recommend this trail.

Hello Mr. Novak. Can you just tell me how much time you needed for the whole tour? Is the path fully marked to Govnjač as well?

Thanks for the information.

Mountaineering greetings, Peter

I think about 9 hours walking, but not fast. From Savica to Mahavšček 4.5 hours, descent to Komna 2.5 hours and from Komna 1.5 hours. Path marked (marks not as frequent as e.g. to Triglav), but fine as it's well trodden. To Govnjač two options - shortcut or around.

Conditions yesterday: Serpentine upper part quite icy/smoothed, same last part under Dom na Komni. So microspikes really ease the way.
From Hut to Bogatinsko sedlo dry, Mali Bogatin just patches. Towards Krnsko jezero more snow that sinks, but lower quickly almost gone.
Per caretaker well trodden to Rjava skala and Koča pri Sedmerih, latter recommend spikes due to slipperiness.
Very warm day, midday at saddle comfy short sleeves.
