Morning start from Vranček along the described path to Planina Korošica. From there across the meadow on the path to Hajnževo sedlo, then along the border ridge left and steeply towards the goal. Need to be a bit careful right below the summit when the ridge flattens, as it's very narrow, especially when wet, danger of slipping. Descent from the summit along the western ridge to the saddle, then down to Planina Korošica, from there back west again, first a few minutes uphill to the turnoff for Ljubelj. We choose the hunting path along which we reach the Matthausen monument, from there just a few minutes walk along the main road to the starting point.

Ascent along the access road to Planina Korošica was gentle, occasionally disrupted by debris on the road. Below the pasture we took the path right and then left following traces of predecessors who had already achieved our goal. We didn't go for the ascent to Hajnževo sedlo itself, but continued ascending through the forest towards the ridge above the saddle along a firm track. Along the ridge (summer eastern path) we continued on foot to the summit plateau, where the path turns towards Košutica peak and thus ended our ascent. Descent in the direction of the ascent. Snow is hard throughout the tour (need snowshoes, crampons, ice axe), in places windblown to hard base, in some sections a few cm of wind-packed snow. LP Andrej

I park at the road hut and continue along the road to Planina Korošica. I wanted to go via the hunting path but I parked a bend too early. From the planina I continue to Hajnževo sedlo. From the saddle first some steepness, then the path goes onto the ridge, over which I climb to Košutica. At the summit I have company of one mountaineer and his dog. I return the other side and further along the hunting path back to the valley. Since I had the car a bit lower I descended via forest paths to it. Today it was hot even in the mountains, the wind also calmed down somewhere

Due to not very promising weather Košutica proved to be the optimal tour in the given conditions. As expected, most of the path was shielded from fog by the southern ridge of Košuta, which later surrendered itself. I go up via the avalanche chute and right to the woodcutters' trail, descent via the hunting path . To Korošica fog wandered here and there, roots occasionally took firm hold of my steps. Above Hajnževo sedlo I finally got to greet the sun briefly, which warmed me nicely. Later fog also covered Ljubeljska Baba, so I saw only the full moon of the sun. It also started to cool and blow from the west here, otherwise more from the south, only the last hundred vertical meters of the peak. In Austria they already had foggy cover too, like in winter. Yes, winter is approaching with fast steps, especially already in the heights of our mountains.

Due to afternoon thunderstorms I headed to nearby Ljubelj and from Mauthausn towards Korošica. At first easy walking enjoying the green nature, later the left Scarpa Vega boot suddenly starts gaping. Well, the old ones are already venerable 15 years, I say to myself. A bit below the planina snow appears, from spruces it's already dripping well at noon. I make a loop to Korošica, there turn left to the border ridge. I attach crampons to the gaper and continue ascent along the ridge trench to the rock barrier. Up to here it went fine with some sinking into bushes, further steeper slopes covered with wind-blown patches of thicker snow. It broke through mostly to scree and rocks, which made steps quite unstable in crampons. Higher to the summit also some smooth ledge sections, so I aborted the ascent. Any slip on the otherwise wider ridge would end in side deep precipices, ice axe I didn't even take out as it would be just for show. I descend to lower saddle and continue to Rjava peč. There I sit on a dry border stone and have a bite. For descent I avoid the grassy shortcut (at end scarce with snow-slippery), so along the marked cart track back to Korošica, then with gaping boot I waddle along the access road down to the road hut. The path was exceptionally beautiful in windless below and above 1800m some cooler vertigo, snow started above 1800m, weather very changeable with lots of color and light contrasts, a feast for eyes and soul! So I'll remember this special late-May snow or already winter for long. Regards Rok!

Hi viharnik! I was just thinking of going to Košutica this weekend but of course didn't because of the weather. How much snow fell and do you think it will melt by next weekend? Thanks for the reply!

Winter fairy tales like Viharnik conjured for us on Košutica are no more. Probably at least until October not. On Saturday I park on the Austrian side of Ljubelj then along the old Ljubelj road towards Koča na Ljubelju. From the junction where the path to Košutica branches off it's less than five minutes to it. From there into the forest towards the ridge. The path was muddy and one had to be careful. Secures were a bit for tasting and not hard (ladder and some cables). Then I reach Grunt to the border and to the junction below the foot of the final ascent. This is technically undemanding, but quite conditioning. Effort rewarded with nice view especially to the Austrian side of Košuta and across to central Karavanke with Begunjščica, Stol, Ovčji vrh,... View not ideal but still saw quite a bit. On summit some Austrians were there, who ask me to photo them as group which turned into real photo session (bitte still with my camera, and with mine,... ). I descend same path back to junction, from there also to Lokovnikov grintovec. I miss the path to Dovjakovo sedlo, well when I return a bit I find it. From Dovjakovo sedlo the path due to bushes to summit quite nasty. On summit nothing, but view still nice. I hear thunder (from which later nothing came) so I quickly munch then again bushwhacking back to saddle from there back to junction under Košutica. While returning I study a bit if there's another way to Koča na Ljubelju. I go on some unmarked path but it brings me again to ridge and same secures as ascending. Path from secures down already almost dry, but when I reached forest on Austrian side still quite some mud. In the hut on Ljubelj I eat good stew and drink beer then back to car and home.

Yesterday we were on Košutica. Road from Vranček to Planina Korošica quite steep, thick scree in some places on it. Path enlivened by occasional views and flower admiring. From planina by western path to summit. Path u.m., on summit which fog engulfed soon after our arrival only us three. On very summit and along trail quite a few fragrant Kamnik mushrooms. On return to planina we stumble on interesting scene-RTS Slovenia (Marjana Grčman and team) filming piece for Summer Scene.(at end reporter sits under cow and milks like real mountain girl) On way back on screes can observe chamois. (ask fellow hiker to contribute some photo)
