Nice! I'd like to go with him again sometime. Haven't seen him for a long time. Regards

Great tour, just as a well-meaning remark.... Not on a single picture is Veliki Oltar, but Mali Oltar.

I know that's why I wrote Oltar without Great or Small. This is the ridge from Oltar.

So there's still enough snow here that ice axe is needed? I'd go on Thursday, if someone joins.

just to MMP or would you extend to something more?

Sure, something else. But I don't know these areas.

Bojan, ice axe is mandatory. I've been going to MMP mostly via Kotle in recent years, but already June or July. Nice tour. The little stream right below the bivouac under Špik never failed. Good luck!

I was on this tour today, but quit above three larches. Never such nasty scree or path. All ball bearings. I greatly respect it, but hardly understand people enjoying such scree walk. Just below three larches found old piton and abseiled. Descent still extremely nasty - ice axe stuck in scree helped a lot. On Široka peč small rockfall - mountain rumbled minutes. But path, esp under Široka peč, pleasantly cool all the time. But these spots no more, no fun in it.

Too bad you didn't try my variant. I'll go up probably Sunday.

And where does your variant go?

As said, more direct via Kotle, past bivouac under Špik. But nasty scree only in gully under summit, now still snow there. Same for approach from Velika Dnina.

True, this variant is better but unfortunately you beat yourself quite a bit with scree, which is not pleasant these days

If you had glanced 6cm higher, you would have read that I mention the path via Kotle, also briefly on previous page. If you can get Mihelič Sidarta guide "Julijske Alpe northern approaches", it details the path. If you want, I can copy from book to your mail, but I two-finger type, he he.

No problem, sailor. But I have to warn you, it's a tough hike where pathless terrain, scree, talus and snow patches show no mercy. And one more thing: after every trip from the Julians I drop by Danica in (at) Dovje, ha ha.

Forgot to mention another intermediate variant (less cross scree, more bushwhacking), but it requires much more trail sense: just before the larches there's a marked turnoff to the right, then diagonally towards Ponca. In between some time on nice gullies and then you can soon reach the meadows.

Bojan, just one word: Martuljek. Like I see no sense in running on hills, you see no sense in Martuljek. But I tell you, there are no more "crazy" ends around here... Enjoy your banging into the hill, we'll be on hanging slabs, crumbling ledges, wobbly horns and dizzy views...
