Thanks Igor! It seemed to me that there was still quite a bit of snow up there despite the thaw and south exposure. We'll have to wait for them to bring a plow up there, if they're even plowing now. They used to plow around May 20th. For this front the forecasters predicted cooling, but nature turned it differently, so there won't be much ski touring anymore. Here in Ljubljana at 2:30 a.m. it poured like out of a bucket, then again half an hour later. Through the windows some kind of ice or weak hail was flying.

Yesterday the road was clear exactly to the first hairpin above the pasture, where, as usual, there's a fairly large avalanche. The road is never plowed, but usually opens end of June.

Thanks to you too Husky. I know they don't intentionally plow like on Vršič, but before opening, whenever that is, they push away any drifts on the road to make it fully passable. Will have to choose some lower mountains in the future. Best regards and good night.

From Belopeška (Klanška, Mangartska lakes) there are several paths in different directions. If you're interested in Plazje and further to Mangart saddle, then it's clear to the entrance of the gully.

In principle, when the weather is stable in the mountains, it's nice. From this "nice" there are still many factors that ensure a safe tour. If it's cold, snow settles very slowly, transforms and stabilizes on the old base. Winds also make lots of wind slabs on paths, even on seemingly safe summer mountain roads. Sometimes new snow especially on leeward south slopes with sun covers icy surfaces. Sometimes winds themselves in clear can trigger wind snow from walls. Because of these factors we must be perfectly winter equipped and skilled in winter walking, considering movement rules and checking snow and base. Only then do we do the ascent, especially if no trodden path ahead. Usually paths of longer tours are made mostly with skis and less with snowshoes. Regarding conditions on Mangart Saddle Igor will know more, if not on night shift.

@mountain lover, since you wrote somewhere that you only have shoes and gaiters no other gear, can't tell you much cause it won't help you. For ascent to Mangart Saddle you need either skis or snowshoes, as well as crampons and ice axe, whether you'll actually need the latter depends on conditions. But first you should know the summer path well, however in winter sometimes other passages, depending on conditions. Best late spring when snow is settled. Track sometimes there, sometimes not. For avalanches most dangerous above tree line, i.e. from Mesnovka or "big gully" onwards, also behind last tunnel lots of avalanches, so then walk higher above tunnel past ruins. But when longer period of stable winter weather then ideal for ascent to Mangart summit.

Has it ever happened that the tunnel was completely iced over? Does anyone maybe have a picture of what it looked like?

Did the administrators "remove" yesterday's post by "ljubitelj gora (and someone else)", or did he do it himself, I don't know. But I certainly know that ljubitelj gora got a real answer from Igor and viharnik. It doesn't seem fair to me that he comments with a joke on honest answers. So his question was also silly and joking. Who would still believe such a one and bother for him!?

@Velesa I asked ONLY about conditions, how is it with avalanches in winter time on the way to the saddle... but I forgot to read the first page

Velesa ... Well, they deleted mine.. I don't mind, just they could have left the part where I advised ljubitelj gora to check the weather forecast and avalanche danger... and even then it can happen that someone gets carried down to the valley... maybe the word "ferari" was really inappropriate but ljubitelj gora used that word himself in some combination.

Up to the first tunnel at about 1400 m. Data from 09.04., but I think, given the amount of snow - avalanche debris on the road and quite low temperatures last week, the situation remains unchanged.

Thanks! Even if so, probably not much higher up is clear

Higher up there is still quite a lot of clear road, but I think it's definitely too early for biking.
