Rok, this was an excellent achievement. How many hours of walking (climbing) is this approximately for an average hiker? And the parking rates are interesting - a picture from the Bohinj parking would fit here

For an average hiker it's about 16 hours of walking. I started at 6:20 in the morning, back to the starting point around 22:00.

http://picasaweb.google.si/100jan47/MontazInMontazkiPrecenje?feat=directlink Yesterday I was tempted by this Rok's variant. I forgot the map and glasses and, after numerous turns, ascents and descents, I was so disoriented that I happily slid down from Škrbina front notch via screes, snowfields and soft grass into the valley - of course the wrong one (Viška pl.) Nothing to do about it, back up, lost 1h40' and on the other side night caught me, of course. But those strange Italian markings, in headlamp light, are more visible than during the day. Started at 8h, on Montaz exactly at 12h, at the car at 22:12h. G.p.

I'm interested if anyone knows the conditions on the path pl. Pecol-Montaž (state of fixed protection, any snowfields left on the path) lp

I plan to go to Montaž from Planina Zajezere via ferrata Via Amalia. I'm interested where it would be best to descend then. On the map, I saw that a path goes along the eastern ridge of Montaž and then after some time turns from the ridge down towards the north. I'm interested in how difficult this path is and if there is any description of it. Thanks and LP, Bojan

Bojan, you probably mean the Kugy "path". Not much is left of the secured path. Now it's serious climbing. You can find the description in this year's June PV, in Stritar's 111, Mihelič's Julian Alps, Mašerin's Western Julians, and probably elsewhere. If you want to return to Zajzero, there's no other way than the same path. Easier of course to descend via the normal path to Pecol. Just arrange transport. Good luck!

Aha, thanks Gorazd. So that's the Kugy path. We were heading there last year, but winter overtook us.

Also with son we climbed Montaž yesterday, through Findenegg glacier and back via Pipan. Conditions in upper part of glacier fully wintery, in lower wet rock, so otherwise pleasant climbing turns into a bit more demanding. But still excellent tour...

Today, with a colleague, despite not the best weather forecast, we head to Montaž. From Pecola we go relatively late, but since the tour is short it doesn't bother us. Walking across green pastures where cows graze, giving product for famous Montasio cheese, which crafty Italians supposedly make by centuries-old recipe anywhere, not just under Montaž. When we reach saddle Vrh Strmali, short break follows. To the west and above Clapadorio more and more clearing. When on Velika polica, sun already almost too hot. At bivouac Adriano Suringar second stop, then few steps back and into Findegg glacier. Finally we start to loosen up. Climbing in gully still pleasure for now, with years it will become real feat. Soon on ridge and of course summit. View as always splendid, just this time in thick fog. Almost without stop already descending. Here and there through foggy veils view to Zajzero, one of nicest alpine valleys, opens. Descend via Pipan ladder and here first meet people, actually only one Austrian couple. Relying on thick fog descend to long screes perfect for faster descent. Of course can't match goats grazing nearby, but slowly we too reach lower meadows of vast Pecola pastures and to hut Brazza, where without Gässer can't conclude such nice ascent.

Already salivating for homemade salami and cheese. Hope in September they still operate the dairy . Nice tour you did, Lp!

Hi viharnik, the hut closes on 15 Sept, yeah salami were hanging in the right corner too, but not visible in the photo. But the hut with shop, bar and typical farm food offer took a good chunk of the pie that would otherwise stay at Brazza hut.

Igor, wonderful photo report. I really like around Montaž, I recommend to everyone hikes in this area where the view to Montaž opens.

dunno what's the deal with tearing down that cross. probably Italians didn't put it there without reason. and that it can be carried down.

Maybe it was worn out and is now safer in some museum, up there a copy will replace it.
