Pecol-Pipan-Špik nad policami-Pipan-Leva-Špik Hude police

We used the top weather for the hills above Pecol. The path is nicely marked and maintained. There were no crowds at Pipan. I advise against the glacier because rocks are flying nonstop (report from a couple who missed the turnoff for Pipan). The path to the ladder is relatively easy; I think the hardest part is right after the first ladder. The rest is OK.

Leva is a wonderful path; if you're not vertiginous, it offers lots of enjoyment. Walking on ledges that just don't end. I'd warn about the section we missed towards the saddle, but a hiker higher up warned us that we had strayed, luckily just 15-20m. The marking is quite poorly visible (about 30 min before the “saddle”). After the saddle, a short ascent on cables and the hardest part is over. Maybe a sensible reverse loop.

Descent on an unmarked path to Pecol.

Net hiking time for just over 6 hours, total 8.

Both paths are newly equipped. Be careful of rocks dislodged by hikers and ibex. They fly all the time. Also on the descent from Špik Hude police, I recommend a helmet.

Today on Montaz via Pipan ladder and via Levi to Špik Hude police. Up to Pipan ladder there is a small snowfield, which with caution doesn't pose too many problems. Snow is not frozen. On Levi you can avoid all snowfields without problem.

A few years ago I visited the beautiful Pecol pasture twice, once more via the then-old Pipan ladder to Montaz. Potato holidays, 31.10.2024, weather just right for visiting the mountains, I surprise my son and midnight start from Celje to Pecol pasture. His eyes lit up when he saw the mighty range. On the ridge we meet chamois, marmots probably already in hibernation though heard around. Trail well secured, crossing two snowfields no problem, new Pipan ladder much more fixed than the previous one. At the top real summer temperatures, views divine. As often, here too I meet two nice conversationalists and descend back to the valley with them. Almost speechless we lingered a bit longer at the pasture, promised her/it that we would return in the summer. It left, just like with me long ago, also now with my son, a big imprint. Beautifully spent day, full of unforgettable impressions!

Findenegg Glacier at night has quite its own charm. There was snow only for a couple of steps left; the rest was bare. After sunrise still via Levi to Špik tough ledges and down to the valley before the heat. nasmeh

Today, up through Findenegg gully, down via Pipan. If you want in shade to the ridge, practically to the top, you gotta be at Disteis by 8am. At the summit we met three Poles, plus two below ladder and that's all visitors today in this heat.

Montasio 15.8.2025

I would like to share my excitement from my first visit to Montasio.

Until now, it always somehow fell out of plans due to the distance. My philosophy was that it's "a waste" to drive 2 hours for a relatively short tour, namely barely 1,300 meters of elevation is hard to count as something grand. For Montasio, this does NOT apply! I think that few mountains can give you so much in "just" that much elevation. (To avoid misunderstanding, the marked via Amalia is by no means an option for the first ascent. But the desire remains, when the time ripens nasmeh )

To start, the environment of Sella Nevea / Na Žlebeh and the Pecol pastures is straight out of a fairy tale. I'm enchanted. The views from Disteis saddle I won't forget anytime soon either. If anything will instill awe for the mountains in you, it's the view from above into the vertical wilderness of the Clapadorie gorge.

For the way up, of course, the path through Findenegg's couloir was planned, down via the normal route over the ladder.

Just the traverse to the Suringar bivouac is no joke. Some ledges are relatively exposed and the crumbly terrain in such exposure requires complete concentration. The views below and into the distance are breathtaking all the time. What mountains! I was a bit worried for my better half, how it would go through Findenegg's couloir, but at the beginning she went like a chamois. However, she got stuck a bit higher in a couple of places, which by this logic I conclude are more II than I. That short narrow chimney and some detail further towards the ridge. But these details are short and not overhanging, so I could help her in a very safe way by extending a hand from above. We were prepared that there might be such a situation and there was no stress on either side. Personally, the couloir is a fantasy for me, a real authentic mountaineering experience. It's marked excellently and there's no doubt you'd stray somewhere. The views upon exiting the couloir wow, we also notice an interesting little ridge that needs to be traversed to the summit, which probably isn't for everyone.

Regarding flying rocks in the couloir, yes, there were situations, but we weren't sure if from predecessors or from ibex – probably both. But just as well, rocks were flying later on the normal route, which with such a quantity of visitors you simply have to take into account. Two fellow hikers on the path were saying they got hit by a rock on the normal route.

There was a huge number of visitors, the vast majority from Slovenia. The descent via the normal route also thrilled us. I don't know what the previous ZPP was like, but this renovated one is quite twisted, basically it's a real via ferrata. In some places we were quite glad we had the SVK for this descent. Some traffic jams on the ladder, but for 15.8. expected. The shortcut down the scree is of course splendid.

Countless ibex, all the time along the path and everywhere around. Just that was an unforgettable experience. We also observed the famous fight of two adult ibex. Heard a lot of marmots, my partner managed to see one, I hope for more luck next time.nasmeh

For the way back, I perhaps thought we could go over Levo, but with the heat that hit during the descent and the long drive waiting for us, we decided for next time. We'll do it some autumn, starting from the other side.

Unforgettable day and a whole bunch of new goals marked around there. 👍

The moon was giving just enough light to the pasture, so I could go without a headlamp. I continued the trail to the top of the scree slope, where I left my skis and hiked up Pipanova to the summit. The ridge plateau was nicely wind-scoured into the shape of a steep roof, where I spent the most time for a safe crossing. There were some footprints of predecessors but they turned back on this section before the top. The descent was fantastic, when I put on my skis at the bottom and cruised all the way to the main road. In between, you have to take off your skis three times if you're not used to skiing on asphalt nasmeh

I fully agree regarding Pipanova. The only good thing about the new one is that part up there to avoid the section with the always loaded scree, which endangered those on the ladder. Otherwise, congratulations on the ascent.
