PZS prepared appropriate warnings in good time for mountain visits in winter conditions. I'd add that besides crampons and ice axe, a helmet is highly recommended too, which can effectively protect the head even on falls and slips. In recent days in the high mountains it has been windy, frozen and icy, the snowfall already hitting the Julian Alps will cover the icy slopes, so extra attention is advised. Wind drifting snow into cornices will be dangerous for avalanches, as snow slabs will form which are especially dangerous as slab snow triggers at the slightest load. Unfortunately the weather these holidays is not favorable for high mountain visits.

Real expert advice, worth considering. There will be many nice days in the new year for mountain visits.

The situation in the high mountains is very dangerous! Now, with snow covering the icy surfaces even more, walking on slopes is like walking on a minefield. You don't know where you step and what's below, if it will hold or not. Plus, new snow will make walking with crampons quite exposed (boots, crampons), when we slip and they catch on ice, we're head over heels right away. There'll also be lots of cornice falls, winds triggering avalanches. Personally, if I had to go to the mountains, I wouldn't dare walk with snowshoes or crampons. I'd pick very gentle slopes. Hope Triglavski has already told most sensible mountaineers about the real, tough conditions in the mountains.

and85, can you send me some more info about the trip, if you're serious, by email or phone? Otherwise, I'm aware it'll be pretty tough conditions and thanks for the real weather info, I take it as seriously as possible.

just hope there's a party huh? and f*** slip risk... Sometimes I also bash my head against the wall. Sometimes you just gotta give up, or turn back. Making right decisions can be the line between reason and wanting to do something at all costs. That's the difference between a real mountaineer, hiker, alpinist and stubbornness that wants to go to the hills no matter what. Even the greatest give up. I wanted to go to Jalovec tomorrow (and full moon too!). Two things stopped me: illness and conditions... If you're going, go carefully, but even max caution sometimes doesn't help. Conditions can worsen in 5 minutes, so proper gear is essential (not meaning crampons and ice axe). Safe New Year 2010 to all forumers from me too, hope we meet at some party sometime... And go smart in the mountains!

At 17h in Krma, a bit before the basin, 10 cars parked, so New Year's Eve on Kredarica will happen. Road drivable to end of Krma, a bit before basin torrent dug up the road. But it was raining at +2 degrees. Merry celebration to all and lots of mountain pleasures in the New Year, and may it throw us some snow. . And stay healthy and injury-free. GOOD LUCK!

By now the group has probably reached the highest New Year's hut, if they're taking turns breaking cornices on the way. Now I'm sharpening boards for the rocket battery to nail it on theirs, fireworks that'll be something! With 87yo neighbor at home, passing time with home wine and sweets here in Pržanj. Yoo hoo!!!

Every school costs something, this one isn't even that expensive, if we think about what could have happened to them.

Nothing to add to Igor. Some of us checked the road passability yesterday, for anything more it didn't even cross my mind. There were also stickers on parked vehicles besides vignettes, indicating that some were from "foha", as it was once called.

I hope that among those six who were rescued from the path to Kredarica there wasn't any forum member who could have read enough warnings and advice about this path.
