Planned removal of Aljaž Tower from Triglav

In recent times, ideas or even concrete intentions about removing Aljaž Tower from the top of Triglav are appearing again. These ideas have grown in the very top of PZS. They cite as reason that the tower is in such poor condition that it doesn't belong up there, so they would remove it and renovate it, and place it in the newly emerging mountaineering museum in Mojstrana, and on Triglav place a copy. A report about this was on TV SLO in Slovenska kronika on 7.7.2009, and that only a day after the 164th anniversary of Jakob Aljaž's birth. I publicly ask: What has PZS done for the renovation of Aljaž Tower in these 114 years? Of course I also expect public opinions from mountaineers and climbers. For many years it was completely covered with various stickers including from some PDs, twisted and worn, until a small group of Friends of Triglav decided to end this shame on the 110th anniversary. They cleaned Aljaž Tower, took care of renovating damaged parts, even the flags and repainted it in the original color, in which it proudly stands up there today. At this point I would point out that the Republic of Slovenia with DECREE declared Aljaž Tower on Triglav a cultural monument of national importance Article 4 For the monument, the protection regime applies, which stipulates: – protection of cultural, landscape, artistic and historical values and purpose in their entirety, in their originality and integrity, – prohibition of alterations to metal elements of the tower and its relocation, – prohibition of attaching memorial plaques to the tower and its immediate surroundings, – subordination of every use and all interventions in the tower and its space to the preservation and maintenance of protected monumental properties, – enabling the presentation of the whole and individual protected elements and free public access to the extent that does not endanger the monument's protection. The protected area is intended for: – permanent preservation of cultural, landscape, artistic and historical values, – increasing the testimonial value of the cultural monument, – presentation of the monument's cultural values, – educational-demonstration work, – scientific-research work. the full decree is published here: http://www.uradni-list.si/1/objava.jsp?urlid=199981&stevilka=3862 Friends of Triglav publicly announce that we will not allow a violation of the valid decree by PZS.

Devil's band!!! Well, they could carry it down, no problem, by the way we can lower it by a couple dozen meters (TNT for that), and on top erase Triglav from the Slovenian coat of arms. Anyway, if Aljaž Tower is already a cultural monument of national importance, in my opinion we have nothing to fear, because in that case they can't touch it, they can only renovate it.

This one they would relocate to the new museum in Mojstrana, and on Triglav place a copy that would be identical to the original. I don't know if this one is really in such poor condition or if it would just be advertising for the museum that they will open next year in August?

Triglavski But is there anything to this news or did you just throw a bone to gnaw on. If someone thinks like that they have completely missed the mark!! I think there are too many opponents of such thinking

Probably there is something to it that it would mainly be advertising for the museum, as stankoju wrote. I am definitely against relocation!

Yeah that's it...idiots...at the beginning Aljaž set this up as a symbol of Slovenianhood, to show the krauts that it's ours, now the morons (PZS) who want to be role models want to take the tower to Mojstrana...if you ask me it's again just so that someone makes good money...damn scoundrels!!!Bravo serakjo we need to make a petition...we won't give it...just like Aljaž didn't give it to the Germans!!!

The old "rusted" one on top has enormous symbolic value and no tin copy, no matter how polished—even if made of pure gold—would mean nothing more on top of Triglav than a miserable piece of scrap metal

Yes, it's true that Aljaž Tower is a pan-Slovene monument. Our symbol and our pride. But everything in life passes. Even iron isn't forever. Every car in some period becomes just a pile of scrap. So let's think of the bright side of this monument. I don't know how many houses of our poets and writers have already been restored so we can see them and future generations can too. Why shouldn't we allow descendants to see Aljaž Tower too? But it's true they should make a copy of the current one with current look and new material.

The tower is in excellent condition and like that it will outlive us all, those for and those against, and future generations too. Whoever wants to see it should make the effort to Triglav. Otherwise whoever doubts the post can also look here: http://www.gore-ljudje.net/novosti/46459/#19700101010000

Has anyone thought that the copy could go to the museum? Anyway restoration doesn't go forever and eventually (if not already) stops being original and becomes copy of itself (philosophically xD ). Especially, I don't know how much this tower is still symbol of Slovenianness, because it became more magnet for vandalism, than originally intended, and if every PD sticks its sticker up there and some individual thinks how to leave his hair on the "monument". Also: Aljaž Tower should be its page in history, what if they open new one and put monuments on other mountains too? Could someone today put somewhere else and call his scarecrow a monument? I think not :P I'm done...

I first touched it one gray and foggy day back in 1977. And it has stayed forever in me although due to various circumstances I didn't return as often as I myself would have wanted. Even then, more than thirty years ago, when we were one country and everything was "ours", there was no doubt - the tower was a symbol of Slovenia and the Slovenes. It is today too and I think its place is up there exactly where its builder placed it - not anywhere, but at the highest point of Slovenia. The idea to move it seems perverse to me. It needs restoration (but only using original methods and materials) so some other mountain lover over the next thirty years can remember it like this, real, and not just from pictures. Aljaž Tower in a museum is the same as a chamois in a zoo - a sad memory of lost beauty, freedom if you want, and lost dignity. And definitely protect it by all means from fools who disfigure and destroy it every year.

I think it's high time to move Ekar himself to the mountaineering museum in Mojstrana. Let the Aljaž Tower stay where it is.

I discovered the debate too late and wrote something about it already on the PZS forum, which I attach here too, namely: Ph, well, I have to chime in. To the museum let a copy of the tower go, so foreigners and those locals who can't reach the top can see what originally adorns our Father, beside the exhibit of course extensive written and photographic explanation for better understanding to all who will view our pride. To those who have such sinful thoughts about moving the tower and installing a copy: make an effort that the original is properly maintained. You know, metal with proper protection (and of course ongoing maintenance) will last at least the next 100 years. That's something and probably in future generations of proud Slovenes, in that I am convinced, some sturdy lovers of our mountains and monuments will be found again who will make an effort to keep this "our pride" for another 100 years etc. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Every time I reach the top, I touch this gray old man and every time, regardless of weather conditions, a pleasant warmth runs through me at the touch, which probably wouldn't be so if I knew that a copy of "our pride" stands there, and perhaps for that reason I wouldn't decide anymore to gnaw my knees on those worn-out "steps".
