Last week a friend from Šentjur calls me if I'm up for mountains, specifically Raduha via Račka Gates. Despite football I of course said yes right away and so on Saturday four of us, two old and two young, headed up there. In the cold morning, 6°C, the friendly little dog Ajka greets us at Račnik as always. The owner warns us there's quite some fallen trees on the path from last year's windthrow, but probably no problem for us. So we took off from the meadow straight along the forest path where only much higher there are some fallen trees, easy to avoid. Also on the path to Račka Gates there are still some fallen trees, which can be passed without much trouble and without extra charge, as Zdravko joked. At the Gates we took time just for photos, as you can't go without, they are after all the largest natural arch in Slovenia. Climbing over its arch was a first-time experience for the other three and they were thrilled. The view compared to under the arch is incomparable, you can see Sv. Duh above Solčava, Ojstrc in Austria, Storžič, Strelovec, Krofička, Ojstrica, Robanov kot, V.Vrh, V.Rogatec, Menina planina, above us the mighty wall of Raduha. We continued on the lower easier path. Although in my opinion it's not any easier than the upper one if we choose access to Pomol along the ridge. That's what we did and climbed to Pomol on the right easiest variant, which is nicely trodden. We enjoyed watching the chamois on the rock tower nearby. We used the break at Pomol to enjoy the wonderful panorama, as the weather was really nice. Higher we turned right through labyrinths of large boulders, which are again a special experience. At the picnic spot we of course took time for lunch with plenty of joking talk. Continuing at the end of the flat part of the ridge we turned down right into the gully and climbed to the other side to a climbing much more attractive ridge. There was quite some laughter because of the dust we raised while descending through dense thickets. At the hardest part we used belay for the weakest link in the team. There grow quite a few nice gentians and some bilberries will invite for treat in August. The ridge needs to be climbed as much as possible on the left to avoid almost all thickets on it. Of course you need to be quite focused, as the exposure is quite big. Especially the last upper part offers on the left a very attractive and very exposed rock ledge for really nice shots with lots of adrenaline. During the break on Mali Rt a group joined us that came up from Grohot. We descended the hunting path past the salt lick and the abyss hidden dangerously under fallen spruces. When during a stop near the central gully we watched the prominent spire at the start of the upper ridge and admired the mighty Račka Gates on the other side, we realized how much beauty we experienced that day. Also the traverse on the upper hunting path, where caution still can't slack, and descent on nice green carpets of soft dwarf pine to the marked path offered us plenty of enjoyment to conclude this nice tour. Of course we didn't miss the obligatory cooling in the stream above Račnik. Companions, thanks for the wonderful company up there. Best regards and safe steps to all from under the beautiful Golte, Janez
