Račka Gates-Raduha (04.09.21)

I park in Rogovilc and still in the dark to Račnik Farm. Daylight was slowly coming which meant continuing off-trail. Nothing to add to the route description, only from older posts the big bright spot was that the hunting hut was still standing. Now everything is somehow bulldozed, but there are still wood remains. On the still quite well trodden path there are no obstacles or fallen trees. Above the magnificent gates I climb further towards the ridge. With some orientation there are no problems here except in thick fog. Need to stick to the ridge, where there are no rocks the path is well visible. Some fog greeted me at the exit to the marked path. From the summit I descend the classic way to Rogovilec. On sections where the path was quite precipitous they installed a fixed rope, very praiseworthy. Many will feel safer. There was still enough time, so I drove further to Logarska Valley for a new adventure.

Račka Gates 1.3.2022:
That day I didn't plan any mountains at all but then it turned out like this.
At home suddenly so many babysitters for the grandson appeared that mine told me to take advantage of the day and go enjoy. She knows well that in such nice weather I keep looking towards the Golte if I'm at home.
But for a few days I was drawn elsewhere, but I didn't know the conditions. It was already eight o'clock when I quickly packed my things. Most stuff is always in the car and backpack, just add a banana, apple and something to drink.
Almost exactly at nine I was already parking at Račnik, where a playful young dog greeted me. I ask where I can park so the car isn't in the way and chat a bit with Račnik's son. He wishes me luck and I slowly bite into the slope of their meadow. Because of the late hour I started like a teenager and soon realized I wouldn't get far like that. I slowed my pace so the pulse calmed nicely and so did I. I started enjoying. The weather was wonderful and so were the views.
For the beginning I set the goal Gates, there I'll see where further. Almost to the gates it was dry. From Račnik's hut upwards patches of frozen snow started appearing on the trail. A bit below the Gates I had to put on crampons for crossing the gully by the salt lick. The Gates always make a magnificent impression on me again. The view of the mostly dry continuation lures me further. With short stops during walking I continued over the almost dry arch towards the Promontory below Raduha. After crossing two snowfields I took off the crampons for the dry continuation.
During the ascent chamois kept me company here and there. Below the Promontory I put on crampons again, which stayed on until the summit. In the gully by the promontory the snow was just hard enough for nice kicking. A bit awkward was then crawling along the ridge to the Promontory and back from it. When you don't know if the snow over the bushes or rocks will hold or you'll make a hole and... But it was worth it, as the view from the Promontory outweighs all that.
On the spot for snack a bit higher I took a longer break and looking at the still standing cairns remembered many beautiful and varied experiences with colleagues up here. Some choughs also joined me so I could give them something.
The gentle part of the ridge awaited me, which in winter is the most annoying on one or two sections. There I struggled a bit. Scratching with the ice axe on the rock wasn't missing either. Without major problems I found myself below the last steep part under Mali Rt and just a bit of concentration separated me from the summit, where almost forgotten feelings from conquered peaks flooded me.
Nice weather just wouldn't let me off the summit. The winter descent also offered plenty of pleasure, as I walked where in summer it's impossible due to bushes. The views are completely different too. For descent I didn't need crampons, only the middle part on the marked trail I put on microspikes, lower it was dry again.
Conditions will be wintery for quite some time.
Best regards and safe steps to all from under the beautiful Golte, Janeznasmeh

Račka Gates 1.6.2022
The road to Račnik farm is being renovated so the car must be left below before the bridge. That means 2 extra kilometers.
We climb over the gates' arch and hurry up the slope to the next goal - Pomol. At the Pomol we take more time for snack, rest. Dark fogs carried by SW wind towards Raduha chase us a bit. To Mali Rt we don't stop anymore. From Mali Rt we continue to the summit of Velika Raduha. The summit today has no visitors (except choughs and us). We treat ourselves to some rest. We descend to the shepherd path that leads directly to Planina Arte. We stop for a short break and continue on the marked path towards Rogovilec. We are aware that two strenuous hours of descent await us. On the way down we collect all the ticks that Raduha has. They crawl on arms, pants, shirt, head. Small like black dots, fast, large, slow ones that you notice immediately when they crawl on the body. At Račnik we stop at the spring and thoroughly wash and rinse clothes. It doesn't help; to Rogovilec we are full of them again. At the Bar Igla snack bar we stop, take off clothes and wade knee-deep into the cold Savinja. Again body cleaning, rubbing with towel, changing follows.
When I get home and tell my wife about the ticks, she locates at least five pieces stuck to the skin in a few seconds...

Račka Gates 19/20.7.2022:
Lately I've been lazier to write on the forum, but it was so nice that maybe it will inspire someone.
At half past four in the afternoon we started this adventure from Račnik's yard. Račka Gates were even more beautiful in the late afternoon sun than usual. We arrived at the Pomol below Raduha way before sunset and could thus wait for it in peace. Meanwhile we arranged the sleeping space a bit. There's space just for 2 plus 1. The sunset behind Obir was really wonderful, I'd say fairy-tale like before. Sleep was pleasant too. In the middle of the night I woke up. You know why and then enjoyed an hour looking at the starry sky. In that hour I saw many satellites and some shooting stars. Bats were hunting their prey in silent flight. Below us people in Solčava and Robanov Kot slept peacefully. Then I sank into such sleep too and woke up to a beautiful morning.
Sunrise isn't visible at the Pomol because Raduha is in the way behind. We got to the sun already a bit above the Pomol. Higher we went to the adjacent ridge with an impressive pillar. Along this ridge we then climbed to Mali Rt and further to Raduha.
We descended via the hidden hunting path below Aklj. Tired from the demanding path and hot sun we finished the tour with pleasant chat on the bench in the walnut shade at Račnik.
Best regards and safe steps to all from under the beautiful Golte, Janeznasmeh

On Saturday we finally treated ourselves to the approach from Račka Gates to Raduha. Hard to give objective ratings, but subjectively - I don't know a nicer path of this difficulty level around here yet! Obviously there are so many variants around there that I'll gladly return ...

Some impressions are here.

Raduha - from the Račnik farm and over Račka Gates to the summit, back along the marked path over pl. Arto and past Snežna jama to the Račnik homestead

This is not some prestigious high mountain tour, similar to nearby Krofička from Roban over Črni Hriber and Ute it's not, but anyone who knows this wonderful world of hidden paths, off-trail routes and steep slopes between ridges, forests and scree, will come back here many more times to enjoy the wonders of nature and mountain peace.

A fairly good road leads to Račnik now, the lower part is also asphalted, but there is no parking below the farm and you need to ask the locals beforehand where you can leave the car so it's not in the way of either agricultural tractors or forest machines, as logging is in full swing at this time.

There are no markings or signs from Račnik to Račka Gates and further over the ridges of Tolste peči of course, there are few cairns too, and hunting paths don't always lead "in the mountaineering direction upwards to Raduha", so organize your first approach preferably with someone who has been here before, otherwise your adventurous and exploratory spirit will be tested several times due to the tour's orientation difficulty, and avoid fog too.
It's an off-trail route that's quite hard to follow through the forest, beyond Račka Gates the path is often blocked by rock walls and numerous ridge spurs that need to be crossed and sometimes quite narrowly, crumbly and exposed, and the scree in the other part requires mountaineering experience - on one hand it's helpful, on the other it hinders the ideal route choice and you have to manage (well where the branches are sawn off, it's surely right).
In general, the optimal climbing route over the Tolste peči ridges nowhere exceeds a II, but it's not some very easy scrambling as it might seem to some at first.
Autumn is undoubtedly the most beautiful and most suitable time for such a trip, no more snakes and ticks, a bit more leaves on the ground don't bother that much either, as there are more views because of it.
Morning at the Račnik farm, a comfortable road leads here, but no parking1
Up there, somewhere in the central ridge, the Račka vrata are hidden2
First a bit on forest tracks and paths, then searching for the trail3
The steepness soon warms us up4
Vili was the one today who resolved all the orientation puzzles5
Here once stood the Rački hut ... now two forest roads cross6
Continue ahead and to the right, the consequences of the ice storm a few years ago are still visible7
Across the characteristic rocky scree tongue and to the right next to it upwards ...8
... and suddenly the Račka vrata appear before us9
When you're in front of them, it's hard to capture them in the lens, they measure at least 30m in length and about 20m in height10
Crossing the gate, the arch is narrower and more demanding at the bottom, then it widens and flattens11
View back while crossing the arch12
After descending from the arch, go left and traverse through the forest to that rocky barrier13
Then we climb parallel under the rock wall14
And sooner or later you have to get to the ridge15
Steep and demanding ascent to the promontory16
Some parts are crumbly, otherwise the rock is averagely good17
On the promontory, where there is a metal cylinder with the logbook18
View from the belvedere downwards, where a window is seen in the ridge, and below also Račnikova domačija19
continuation above the belvedere20
follows a passage to the right21
traverse to the right before the second larger rocky obstacle22
also need to cross some smaller windows23
and view through it24
view of the rear part of the ridge25
and in between still a little valley ...26
then the crossing of the hillocks with scrub begins27
under the last ascent the scrub is conveniently trimmed28
View back29
almost already at the exit from the ridge30
when we step on the marked mountain path it is still cca 15 min to the top of Raduha31

and chat with locals and farewell from their Džek who accompanied us most of the path to the top and back39

Račka Gates 29.11.2023:
I had already forgotten what devastation this year's floods made in our valley. So I was a bit surprised when I turned behind Račnik and there was no bridge over the Savinja. August's raging Savinja washed it away.
Then I turned over the neighbor's bridge, past which they are just fixing the road and it's not drivable either.
So around 6 I parked at Rogovilc and set off on the path under the full moon without turning on my headlamp. It dawned just below Račnik, where I could already hear the locals working in the barn.
Soon the peaks above Robanov kot appeared in their full beauty in the morning sun.
While pondering all sorts of things I arrived at the Gates somewhat tired. I hit the right arrival time, as the sun shone right through them making them even more majestic.
I continued along the lower path under Pomol below Raduha and climbed to it on the right side. A bit of fresh snow made climbing up there quite difficult. On Pomol I remembered our overnight there last year, and how Milan and I built that upside-down cairn back in 2016, and it still stands and brings much good up there.
After a clear start to the day, mists began appearing on neighboring peaks, soon joined by mists on my side. So I abandoned the ascent to Mali Rt via the neighboring right ridge and continued to the summit via the main one.
Since there was still some strength in my legs I continued to the top of Raduha and then descended the marked path. Still high above Račnik their dog Džek came towards me, who knows Raduha better than all of us. Besides him I saw lots of chamois, a capercaillie, two ptarmigans and my shadow on the way.
Best regards and safe steps to all from under beautiful Golte Janeznasmeh
