Yesterday my better half and I went on a nice Sunday trip to Ratitovec. We chose the route via Poden (Povden). There was some snow on the path, but it's well trodden and crampons aren't needed. On the descent, you need to be careful, as due to southern snow there's risk of slip and fall on your rear . In that case crampons or "spikes" or careful steps are recommended. Janez

Has anyone gone to Ratitovec from Soriska Planina recently? If so, please describe conditions. Thanks

I like Ratitovec a lot too. Went from Danje and from Zelezniki (Poden and Razor) but not yet from Soriska. Path from Danje is pleasant, easy, winds long so you can see a lot (summer flowers). Lots of old forts from world war. Interesting, but I prefer paths where I give more of myself. Esther

Doesn't affect path beauty , but anyway: forts are from period between world wars and never served purpose - protect border set by Rapallo Treaty between Italy and Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Path hiked Sunday 20.1., no track made, so broke through in places, but trail visible due to many ski tourers and snowshoers. Snow from ca. 30 to 70 cm. According to forecasts conditions will change. LP

Dear Rakar. In my path description I didn't mean to give impression path isn't beautiful. Rapallo Treaty, by which Kingdom SHS lost much territory in exchange for recognition, was big disappointment for Slovenes. Without Rudolf Maister and some individuals, things wouldn't be as today. Thanks for chat. Esther

No, of course not, Esther. We misunderstood each other. My remark was self-justification, because instead of the path and its conditions (which is surely the forum's primary purpose) I added some historical facts. I wrote because many link those forts to events in WWII. Esther, it was a pleasure, I wish you many pleasant paths to Ratitovec!

Thanks for the nice response. This historical intermezzo, I hope it harms no one. Lots of nice experiences in the mountains to you too! Esther

Interesting info on the state of attractions along the path to Ratitovec - I thought those forts were from the 1st World War.

As written, placing these remains in the wrong historical context is nothing unusual. I don't want to be smart; with a little web searching about the 'Rapallo border' and associated remains you can find a lot... But it is really an interesting comparison of the quality of construction (and consequent preservation) of WWI military objects (say on the Isonzo front) and those on the 'Rapallo border'; the latter are mostly in much worse condition, although several years newer. As always, buildings say a lot here about the mastery of their builders. Now I'm really wrapping up. Regards

What about the mine on Ratitovec. What did they mine, when did they close it and is some tour of this mine possible (with a guide or otherwise). Katja

On Ratitovec they mined iron ore. Because this ore had the shape of a bean they called it bobovec. In one piece of bobovec there was 50 to 60% iron, which ranked bobovec among quality ores. The mine was open for 40 years namely from 1820 to 1860. Greetings from Železniki

On Saturday I'd like to head to R. from Soriska pl. I've never hiked this trail either. Asking if in these conditions it's possible with snowshoes and without to climb Ratitovec, and if the right direction can be missed on the path!? Thanks for info and LP. Tone

I already hiked this path this year when there was much less snow. Since you haven't hiked this path yet, wait for the track because many marks are on the ground on rocks now covered with snow. My opinion is you can miss it in these conditions.

I did this path on dry ground and warmly recommend it. I agree you can get lost in snow if you don't know the path. I'd also like to do this path in winter conditions, so I'm interested if anyone knows if the track is already made or if it can be expected on Sunday? LpLj

On Friday 8.2. we headed to Ratitovec via Razor, it was gorgeous. Path is snowy but well trodden towards top snow was a bit crusty underfoot and slippery. Crampons recommended at least for descent not mandatory. LP
