Struška

Today I was on Struška. Via Pusti Rovt to Kočna saddle and further via Svečica pasture to the summit. Returned along the ridge itself to Kočna saddle. From pasture to summit about half a meter snow in gullies, but already quite nice bare patches in between. On descent along ridge sank several times up to my butt. Towards end of wide ridge section grabbed bushes a bit until hit old footprints where someone climbed.

Excellent morning hike.

Yesterday there was a nice sunny day on Struška. Horses graze on Planina Seča, cows on Belska Planina. At the latter, you can get homemade sour milk in the shepherd's hut.
A few more impressions from yesterday. Lp

And an afternoon jump to Struška. At Križovci sleds into the bushes, to Planina Svečica and to the summit. Conditions pleasant, warm, inversion, no wind, wonderful sunny sunset, back the same way and from Križovci still fantasy with sleds almost to Pristava. Tomorrow is a new day already. Lp!

Yesterday I climbed from Planina pod Golico to Struška. Up to Pustega rovta, where I joined the usual path from Križovca, I didn't meet any hikers, from there on there were many walkers and ski tourers (about 60).
And also, if anyone wonders where the old shepherd's hut is, I'll say they demolished it. A friendly local told me they will build a new one this year with some rooms for hikers.

Today 1.6.09- pleasant old path along the ridge dry, only the gully below the summit of Struška (Veliki vrh) is still snowy. You can easily avoid the snow, on descent it allows nice "glissading". A new hut is being built on the pasture. Everything is blooming in order, only crocuses, of which there were plenty last year, I didn't notice. Narcissus are still in season here (some still closed). Livestock not yet driven up, so now is the right time to visit blooming Struška.

Even the apparently dry Struška can be a very demanding tour in winter time.
I drive along the road to the Križevca junction, which is almost dry. I start the ascent to Struška a bit differently this time and cross it eastwards all the way to Medji dol. On the way I pray to Sri Katjajani (Daughter of Himalayas) for Humar's protection. There I join the hunting path that leads to Seča and further to the blowholes. Up to here ideal with snowshoes. Further in the long basin I see endless plantations of dwarf pines, no end!. Still I decide to cross this very demanding plateau. Everything covered with powder that gives no support and sinks deep, up to the pines. Good that I already checked the ideal crossing direction from above. Walking slow, laborious. Once stuck up to my waist including snowshoes in a hole. Stretched out and rolled to the edge. In between I take a break and save strength, eat. Later the sun softens the snow a bit, so it goes a shade better. For just twenty meters I needed about 10 min. Good that I don't have any snowshoer behind me this time, because I couldn't help him then. I myself barely got out.
Struška now walked in all directions-Over Kočna, on the new logging road good path, my directions despite tracks I don't recommend.Lp-Roknasmehjezikmežikanje

20 May 2010.
With my dear little sister we decided to go
with the dog company to Belska Planina, a bit to check the flowers. Then up to Struška.
Avrikelj is already blooming a little, pansies and gentians are
still very few. Need to wait another 14 days or so. To the main summit of Struška we didn't make it either.
We took the longer path, behind the hut, across meadows and then along the edge. Nice view. But it was too cold, and the wind was blowing hard. Still quite a lot of snow. So our little group decided to head back to the valley. In the shepherd hut Svečica we chatted a bit, then we
headed back to the car. Oh yeah, and the tips on the brush aren't there yet, čav!

Today family ascent to the "flowering" Struška. We really wanted to experience this so "sung botanical garden" in spring once. We assumed the summit would see quite a few visitors today, so we tried to avoid the crowds as much as possible. At the last junction, unlike most others, instead of towards Križovec we turned right and parked at the start of another marked but less crowded hiking path leading to Pusti Rovt. From there along the usual path to Kočna saddle. When we crossed the pasture fence further on, at the path fork again unlike most we went straight up the ridge instead of the marked path to Belska Planina – Svečica. Unmarked trail leads all the time right along the state border. Before the last ascent, when the trail kind of disappears, first take a good look at the slope densely overgrown with brush to later find passages more easily. At two spots there was really no other way but to "break through" a narrow band of dense brush, otherwise it went smoothly to the top. All the time on the way and at the summit itself a fairly strong wind accompanied us, which was even welcome so the heat didn't "kill" us. At the top quite a few visitors, but as ordered all set off to the valley within about ten minutes after our arrival, so we alone enjoyed the views for another hour. If the air had been clearer, it would have been a perfect ten. The kids liked it so much that after about an hour of lounging we barely got them off the top. We descended towards Belska Planina and on to the starting point. All along the path we had something to see: the green-yellow contrast prevails, which the spring green meadows get from cowslips, Zois violets, kidney vetch, golden saxifrage and blooming dandelions, among them "endless quantities" of spring and Clusius gentians. We really haven't seen so many of the latter anywhere as here. We warmly recommend visiting Struška at this time.

Today I headed to Struška... really nice and a real botanical garden. The spruce tips towards the summit are just right for picking. In two to three days they'll be overripe. So pickers hurry...

Yes, even in summer it's nice there. Need to get up a bit earlier to catch the sun already at Belska Planina. Peace, you're alone, yet life is all around you. How soothingly the cow bells ring. Music for the soul.
You can go behind, past the shepherd hut, across meadows to the top of Struška, return straight down the shorter path. Nice wherever you go. Flowers everywhere, even the heather blooms. Very suitable for small children. In the hut the friendly caretakers will serve you too.

In the afternoon I drive to Križovec and head to Belska Planina. Short time on the road then on the footpath. The path is really pleasant, gently ascending all the time without major steep parts. It seemed to me I was at the hut on the planina too quickly. I sit a bit in the warm sun in front of the hut. Visibility was good so I decide for Struška too. At the top a light breeze and nice views. Have a nice time, and safe travels.

Belska Planina -

Let me share this nice day with you, sun, snow, and a bit of wind to make it even more wintry.
We thought of Struška, but behind the shepherd hut the snow is just frozen enough that it sinks nicely, not for dogs. Could go straight up, but some other time.
It was nice, we all enjoyed, even though we only got to the hut, well a bit further, čav - ŽIMM...

Majdag, thanks for sharing the beauties you brought from our wonderful planina down to the valley!
I too like visiting Struška and Belska Planina very much. The reasons are clear to anyone who's been up there at least once in life.
Wonderful pictures! Today it was exceptionally nice up there, right?
Best regards h!

Beautiful sunny day on Struška, stolen from the morning rain. Views so good you can only sit and slowly absorb them, for stock, for all foggy mornings and inversions coming with winter. And dream. And see them as if on the palm of your hand. Peaks you've been to, and those you've been heading to for years, but something always gets in the way. On border trails among darkest brush some powdery snow lingers, on pastures some gentian still.

There was fog on Struska today too, enough that I could export it to places that don't have it.
I park at the crossroads near snow remnants, continue over Pusti Rovt where there's only a few cm of snow, higher up to pl. Svečice the blanket thickens to 20cm. Towards the summit some slopes are blown clean, between the bushes snow stayed protected from wind, where it was the most, around 30cm. Higher up south wind came, which intensified the already low sub-freezing temperature, so at the top I swapped soft shell for PrimaLoft jacket. Ahead of me the alpine hut manager had pulled a track early in the direction of west ridge (easier path-avoid bushes, ridge-fog), which is also nicer access than direct path through wide valley. A bit below summit I finish the trodden path, as the caretaker turned back earlier. According to caretaker Mitja the night above was completely clear with stars in sky, fog in valley below, so he decided almost at 2am to go to Struska summit. After return from cold summit upon polite invitation I warm up in warm hut and drink a shot of homemade. Hut for now from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon offers shelter, tea and other drinks, next year maybe even overnight in upper floor of common room when equipped. Today's walk despite fog was really nice and interesting with walk on snow whiteness, which always gives some cleansing balm to soul depths.nasmeh
