So did we get an answer? Regardless of how it's written the question is clear. Some of you have time. Really. In short has anyone been to Tosc from Rudno polje in the last few days? How's the snow?

An ice axe is a mandatory part of mountain equipment in the high mountains, even though summer is approaching. We can always be surprised by a steep snowfield. Life is only one and cannot be compared to carrying an ice axe.

@Marty hi, I was up there today. You cross another snowfield, but it's not problematic. Winter gear is not needed for visiting Tosca Regards.

Today on Tosc. While there was a crowd on all paths around Studorski preval, we were completely alone on the pathless approach to Tosc. Priceless.

To be honest, conditions in gullies are difficult and delicate. There's virtually no gully where you could go without complications, ice jumps are even where you don't even know they could be. E.g. photos 5 and 6. If conditions were really "good", you wouldn't even notice that one.

In winter conditions are always delicate, no matter how ideal they look. Fully agree, with more snow that jump wouldn't be there. But there could be lots of wind-blown snow at the exit, suddenly slope 60° or more... bit of a problem. Could be for trudging, could slide, despite low rating. On the other hand gully could be fully icy, hardly feel the axe to the top. In short, easy to imagine several real scenarios of harder conditions. But easier and better always possible too

No no. Obviously everyone has different perception of what "good conditions" are. My view is pretty clear. Good conditions are those with minimal chance of trouble in the route. And - hand on heart - no one gets in trouble just because need to trudge a bit (plus talk of trudging need in current conditions context bit theoretical - conditions reported just in routes someone already did, so at least some trampled). If ice jumps in route, esp where not expected normally, then maybe someone will. And no, not been to Tosc. But to Begunjščica yes. And honestly hard to imagine worse conditions. Last time through there, my partner took dog too, which jumped over that steep bit.

Yes, everyone has their own, somewhat subjective opinion, but it's quite right to debate about it. We knew there was a jump there because a colleague was up a day or 2 before. I intentionally posted the picture of the jump from both angles so the conditions are objectively shown, beyond my opinion. Otherwise, my stance, regardless of the tour, be it a winter gully or just Šmarna: anyone heading out on a tour must be able to traverse it in conditions harder than the best imagined ones. Because surprises are always possible. I know sadly many people don't think that way. Well, some not at all, that's why so many rescues. On Begunjščica I think there's really less snow (or there was before New Year's snowfall), but I wasn't there and hard to comment.
