Yes, Iztok, let's say it like this: if I write anything again, I'll imagine I'm writing for those who take what is written in good faith and, of course, with that bit of caution and distance needed when accepting (I admit, also when giving!) forum advice. Pictures (in support of the text) might contribute to the impression of those same readers that I am not writing entirely off the top of my head. Lp

Rakar, don't worry. Everyone must first sort out for themselves what they are capable of and which tours they will tackle and acquire appropriate information about the tour. Your intent wasn't that now that you've described the tour everyone would rush up the gully, but to give information to those capable of doing the tour with appropriate equipment. What surprises me most is that people in winter time ask whether they need crampons and ice axe in the mountains. That is part of the equipment which we must have with us, then on the tour itself we assess whether to use it or not. Better that it's in the backpack than that we find ourselves in trouble. Otherwise, some people anyway just like to criticize, as shown on another forum with similar topic, which unfortunately lost credibility because of that.

Rakar, don't get upset! The good-intentioned readers of this forum understood the content of your post perfectly well, unfortunately there is always someone looking for a "hair in the egg". I will gladly read and take into account some of your opinions in the future too.

I agree with you, Kriška! I too will happily read such posts! Those who criticize them, let them have their own joy! Best regards and happy holidays

From my previous words it's probably clear that I've been defending my position as gently as possible, mainly so that the debate wouldn't stray too far from the title frames. Since it has to some extent anyway, I'll try to bring it back, because a few nice days are still ahead. Today's was such and therefore quite suitable also for walks under Tosc - of course you could go further. Well, since I have good connections I got a fresh photo in my hands, showing the grassy clearing above the Zgornji Tosc pasture, where a path branches off the marked "highway" and heads uphill towards the Tosc ridge (easiest approach). It's nice to see that conditions are even better than 14 days ago - almost ideal for this time of year. Still, you need to be appropriately cautious. Regardless of it being the south side, the grassy base is hard frozen even in the middle of a sunny day, patches and larger snow areas in the upper and especially summit part are wind-packed and icy. By the way, some herds of winter-emaciated chamois are wandering around there. A quiet and observant visitor can spot a shimmering ptarmigan in the coniferous green and unwittingly flush a flock of white ptarmigans on the bare slopes higher up. Well, you won't meet many people! Safe steps, nice views and joy in your eyes I wish you!

Yesterday we climbed Tosc via the eastern gully. Snow in the gully nicely settled, already quite trodden. Two short jumps still not melted. LP Ivan

Today I was on Tosc and I have to say that the situation from the easiest access is identical to Rakar's picture, until you look at it up close. Without crampons you can't go up, because it's quite frozen.

Even if there wasn't a paragraph above my photo containing words and phrases " ... be careful ... hard frozen ... larger areas of snow ... windblown ... icy ... " the "presence" of crampons and ice axe on a high mountain tour in winter is self-evident. Actually writing about this again is superfluous, I'm posting again only because I remembered that once the old mountain cats impressed on us enthusiasts how walking with crampons on steep hard frozen grasses combined with some patch of snow and ice is excellent if not the best possible training ... I never quite figured out if they meant it completely seriously but I followed and it worked - among other things I learned pretty well to sharpen teeth on crampons. On Tosc now there are just right conditions for the aforementioned activity. Here we found yet another reason for a visit. One lucky and healthy!

I'm interested if anyone has hiked to tosc in the last few days - what are the conditions?

27.1.2007 I was at Mrežcah from where quite a few people could be seen on top of Tosca. Most likely winter gear needed if not for anything else just for safety. If I had gone up that day I would have had very nice weather. Regards

After a good three hours of hiking or sinking in soft snow we arrived at the eastern gully which leads to Tošc. Snow wasn't transformed but sufficiently frozen so we continued the ascent but only to the top of the gully. There we descended due to strong wind gusts and went back.

This weekend we'd go from Pokljuka to Tosc. Is the path dry?

There's still some snow, especially below Draški vrh there are some patches. Ascent to Tosc doesn't cause issues as far as snow goes.
