The fog cleared and the sky opened up already before Kranj. We drive to Pokljuka to the barracks. Path continues above Konjščica pasture, past Jezerce and Studorski pass and along the ridge to VDV. Descent towards the saddle at Konti between VDV and MDV. From there we descended on unmarked path directly to Jezerce and back to start. Almost nothing to add. Weather warm, summery, short sleeves, unusually many visitors on all peaks. Yeah, it hardly gets better....

On 17.11. from the end of the road on Pokljuka I headed to Great Draški Peak. The hike in wonderful autumn weather was pure enjoyment. The path took me quickly via lonely Konjščica pasture higher to the trail to Studorski pass, which was partially snowy and icy, but could be avoided if wanted. Path from Studorski pass to summit well visible and followable, despite low bushes. Upon reaching the ridge to the summit, nice views to Julian peaks opened, especially spectacular on Triglav. After longer sunbathing on summit, descent via eastern path joining marked trail from Srenjski pass to Studorski pass. Then just descent to start. For the whole unmarked path, can say it's well visible and practically no snow. Wonderful day in Julians. Shame to miss it.

We park at Rudno polje, where there's tons of cars. Many go to Viševnik, we avoid it via Kačji rob to Srenjski pass. Follows one of the nicest traverses under both Draški peaks to Studorski pass, since our goal is Tosc, a bit of a detour. Quite a few hikers on this traverse. I think we'd rather turn to VDV from east, but Nina insists to continue. Descent to Vodnik hut, then realize we're late and still quite some walk to summit. Return to Stud. pass and from south side through bushes to summit. With dog much harder approach!! Only at 3pm on summit, and quite some people. Descent east side to saddle under both Draški, then just to Jezerce, sun slowly fading. At dusk back at car and end of fantastic day..

Another nice day. Vast majority went to Viševnik, some towards Konjščica. To Jezerc nice walking, then partially sinking, even over knees. VDV ridge completely wind-scoured, first strenuous through scrub, on mostly dry, partly icy rocks have to climb. On summit even stamp outside, little box obviously blown some 50m lower on south slope. Descent better straight down slope to Studorski pass - ski tourers don't mind, but dangerous ridge descent really not inviting. Otherwise super day, wind not much. Last wind more or less scoured all peaks and paths quite a bit. No avalanche danger.

Today I drive again to Rudno polje. Some go towards Viševnik, I have Great Draški Peak in mind. Path to Jezerci nicely trodden, some places icy and bare, bit of everything. At Jezerci real proper winter. Put "Ketnce" in backpack and strap on crampons, then continue to Studorski pass. Little below Studorski pass summit, turn right up slope on well tracked path to Great Draški Peak. Snow doesn't sink if walking the trail, if go bit your own way sinks properly, I tried. Steps in last steep bit more for big ones, had to step in between oncenasmeh Little below summit two ski tourers ski past me. When I huff to top, no one up there, enjoy mountain silence alone. After long rest slowly head to valley. At Rudno polje quite colder than on Great Draški Peak. Nice day was nasmeh

I wrote what I did, though not only VDV.

Start 8.15 Rudno Polje. First to VDV to check conditions on Ablanca and/or traverse to Srenjski pass. Well, traverse seemed too snowy where it shouldn't, so MDV off. At VDV 10.25, then quick down cos northerly pulling, lower down almost no wind. Nice watching climbers to Kredarica. Around here no people anywhere, not Tosc, not VDV, MDV. On VDV roof steps allow quick ascent comfortable descent. In gully break and bit play stopping with ice axe, at Studorski pass see first people, then up to Ablanca at 11.30. Two spots tricky - one down where scratch on rock, other that traverse. Hats off to those skiing down Ablanca, I saw only Konjščica and air. nasmeh Back at Jezerci 12.00, snack and decide for Srenjski pass. Still don't know why not to MDV, something told me turn right though conditions ideal. Path from Sr. pass to Viševnik (actually almost whole path) doable with crampons and ice axe only, if you ask me, saw guy without anything. Well each knows for himself. Still snack at Viševnik, downhill help lady with snowshoes poles, then swap crampons ice axe helmet for microspikes and fly down. Perfectly made. At car 14.00.
Pics from phone.

From parking on Pokljuka head towards Triglav, as predecessors wrote almost no snow to jezera, but caution as ice appears on path. At Jezerci put on crampons to not stop at Studorski pass as almost always windy there. Decision right, continue left to Ablanca accompanied by strong northerly gusts. Access bit awkward as path only partly snow covered. Then to Gr. Draški peak, path also partly snow covered, snow quite hard frozen. Don't stay long on summit as strong wind. Descent to saddle between Gr. and Mali Draški peak. From saddle not along summer path to Srenjski pass but lower towards Jezerci i.e. under Mali Draški base. This part demanding, snow frozen. Below MDV base turn left to Srenjski pass and on to Viševnik. This part easier as crampons grip well in frozen snow. Path Viševnik to Pokljuka normally "passable with winter gear".

Today three of us headed to Great Draški Peak. Weather ideal (read finally no wind this winter), snow conditions sadly not so great. Almost the whole way 30cm powder, locally more, drains strength a lot, especially since only one ahead to Studorski pass. From there virgin white. Decided for ridge ascent. First part quite uncomfortable and thanks fearless strong male expedition member I didn't quit. Once past first steep part it went. Went to summit no problems, no ice, mostly snow, bit bare rock. Return on usual winter path into virgin white - down easier than up. Now tracked both ways. Unforgettable day.

Me too today on Great Draški Peak. Since first today I cut tracks to Studorski pass. Then three (vespa and company) tempted me to tag along to summit. On ridge in steep part sank deep so every bush branch useful. Rest pure enjoyment.

At the summit one day after you.. thanks for the track made, though lost in places due to blown snow. Summit itself quite scoured and frozen; crampons needed. Otherwise day for enjoying, nothing else mežikanje

Hello!
Over the weekend I'm thinking of checking this area, namely: Ablanca, Great Draški Peak and Viševnik. Start Rudno polje or end of road on Pokljuka.
What are the conditions like on the road and later for the ascent?
Thanks..

Yesterday it wasn't trodden yet. Probably by the weekend it will be, but watch out for avalanches, because temperatures are rising, which on the other hand also means the snow will transform quickly. Write then.

#Flora1, are there many exposed slopes?
like
Flora123. 02. 2012 19:31:26
Many is relative. Enough that there's one. Well, say from the slopes of Mali Draški vrh it always avalanches. The sun is quite strong now and I would wait. I'm more cautious from this point of view and the mountains have been around for millennia, the individual maybe 100 years. You're responsible for yourself and this post isn't mandatory zadrega. Maybe targets like Tromeja, Dovška Baba, Višarje, Komna hut. Good luck and let me know where you went. nasmeh
Let someone else write what they advise so you'll have more choices.

Today the gods didn't allow us to admire the peak of our Daddy and some neighbor too, even though we got up so early. On Pokljuka we already met mushroom pickers in the morning returning with baskets, whether there was anything in them we don't know. In the morning cool we climbed via Jezerca and welcome shade of Viševnik to the saddle between MDV and VDV and lo and behold, Daddy already had a hat onjezenNot that he was cold, we were already quite hot on the saddle. I took time to rest on one of the beautiful meadows on the saddle, meanwhile my dear one tackled the steepness of VDV. I hadn't rested well yet and he was already back. Up top the view wasn't any better either. But mountain flowers beautified our day today. Almost on every larger rock there were flowers in all colors our eyes can see. We returned via Studorski preval back to Rudno polje. Bodies slightly tired, batteries full.
No pics unfortunately due to technical issues.zavijanje z očmi

On Monday to VDV, continuation to Velo polje and the drying lake. Dramatic weather conditions, mists and fogs appeared, chamois called. No snow to the top of VDV, otherwise check conditions in photos I posted on the link.

Joste, beautiful spiritually perceptive description and experience of the mountain landscape and animals before the decisive turnaround of the mountain landscape into winter. I too was overcome by exactly the same feelings in Fužinske planine, that immeasurable grandeur, ancientness of the landscape, eternity, at the same time strong silence and serenity of nature preparing for winter sleep. Nature and animals act completely in harmony and sense that winter is very close. Really beautifully experienced description with mountains, tussocks of dry grasses, lake, mountains, fog.
