On Saturday I'd go with my girlfriend to Velk'vrh (not sure yet if from Matizovca or from Šija). Does anyone know what the conditions towards the summit are like?

The path is completely dry.

We were on Veliki Vrh on Sunday. Fantastic first winter ascent of the season. Thanks Košuta.

seal07, how is the orientation on the path in these conditions? I mean if you don't know the path by heart...

If you don't know the path by heart, it's better to take along someone who knows it and who has been to the summit in winter conditions! Best regards.nasmeh

Guest asking about orientation: have you not even been to Veliki vrh yet, or are you worried about orientation in snowy conditions? From my experience there's a trodden track in winter from Matizovca to Kofce (but check first how cleared the road to Matizovca is). From Kofce to Veliki vrh you just follow the trampled path. So in my opinion winter orientation is easier, especially on such a popular peak like Veliki vrh. Of course you need to know winter hiking hazards and have proper gear, and know to turn back if the path is icy, visibility poor etc... good luck!

From the hut at Kofce you have Veliki vrh right ahead to the summit. If you've already visited it and know where the peak is, no orientation issues. Very good if someone before you makes the gaz and saves you some strength.zmedenvelik nasmeh

Do you think you really have to drive to Matizovca? If someone walks half an hour longer, it won't hurt anyone! jezen

Guest asking me about orientation in post 5. Winter ascents are something completely different than in summer pleasant conditions. Classic marked trails are out, instead ascend where it's safest. That means good knowledge of winter mountaineering. I won't go into details now because it requires mastering quite a few skills. There's plenty of literature on the topic, best is to join an alpinist section. I'm currently a junior trainee and don't know much yet.
I hadn't been to Veliki vrh before. We were first that day so no gaz yet. Low cloudiness visibility about 15 meters, drifting snow with moderate wind. Slopes had about 30 cm fresh powder. We assessed no major avalanche risk so we climbed up the trail as far as it was visible. Otherwise we'd have gone along the ridge. But the trail 200 m below summit vanished under windpacked snow and we seriously considered turning back. After thinking and with ice axes ready we continued along the ridge to the top. On descent late we met 4 enthusiasts pushing up our gaz to the summit, hope they had lamps with them mežikanje

On sunny weekends the path is well trodden even in winter. It's good to have ice axe and crampons with you as the peak is often icy.velik nasmeh

Crampons and ice axe belong to mandatory gear in the backpack for winter tours, whether you need them or not. Otherwise some smart alecks always get found somewhere without anything... zavijanje z očmi

Has anyone been to Veliki vrh these days? What are the conditions, is it suitable for a 9-year-old child?

9-year-old child should stay home and watch how the last leaves fall from the trees.

Veliki vrh in dry and nice weather is a suitable goal for a 9-year-old. I think also in favorable winter conditions (unfrozen track), if used to hills and has reliable escort. For current conditions call Dom na Kofcah:

This is how it was on 3.11.2007: http://www.longbow.si / wp-gallery2.php?g2_itemId=1324
Remaining snow softens during the day, so you need to be careful on the descent, because it sinks in.

Don't worry about 4 eager beavers. We visit Veliki Vrh at full moon, also on nice nights, with a light and properly equipped. And we make a track so it's a track, not the whole criss-cross trodden path.

Today I went to Košutnikov turn and there wasn't really much snow, so I think there's not much towards Veliki Vrh either.
