Does anyone know how much snow there is on Great Peak?

They'll tell you most accurately at Dom na Kofcah, tel. 041/234-638. I've waited until now with the reply, in case Great Peak should show from behind the clouds, to tell you approx, but Košuta is not visible from my window today due to clouds.

On the Karavanke peaks, this morning from the valley during a short clearing, it was possible to observe newly fallen snow; caution will not be superfluous.

On Sunday we did the tour through the north face of Great Peak, snow about 10 cm, no ice. South slopes are dry

Until New Year I plan the following tour: Dom Kofce-Pl. Šija-Kladivo-Great Peak-Kofce. Of course I'm interested if this path is used in winter, if a track is usually made, what the conditions are now, and how it compares to the path: Matizovec-Kofce-Great Peak, which I walked last winter (0.5m snow).

Like this. From Kofce to G.P. due to snow (ca 1m) above bushes at crossing over clearing there is avalanche danger in these conditions. There they already searched for injured. I suggest postponing the tour for a while. Also along the ridge full length there are usually slabs!!!

Yesterday I spent the whole day on sunny Kofce. Conditions for ascent were ideal despite frost. Nice road leads to last steeper ascent to height 940m (last parking left). From there straight over hayfields to forest path. Below completely windless, above on ridge JZ breeze blowing. Path to Kofce gora was trodden, further slightly windblown. Snow on track holds steps, off them not, because still partly windpacked and dry. Still put on crampons on ridge, though some went without. On clearing of Great Peak measured for fun snow depth - 290cm. Somewhere on ridge snow blown to half meter. View from top from Snežnik to High Alps. From top three skiers and some snowboarder with huge board descended. I ask if he'll go down with that? He says: Yes... why not. Later watched him zigzag in long turns, stopped only in basin below summit. I think then, resting on backside, he was laughing heartily. At Kofce with Planšari met and greeted former minister Virant with companion. After pleasant stay in warm wooden Planšari hut and refreshments (green chamois, tea, jota) before dusk down to valley. HAPPY 2009! Rok.

Again start late afternoon. To Matizovec by car, then to Kofce, skis on shoulder, then to ridge and along it again with skis to the summit itself. Since late, and maestrale, jugo and other winds already chasing us, this time without longer break. Skiing: powder, bit hard base, very little crust, then some standard wallowing through forest, then PRŠIIIIČ that I haven't experienced yet. In short, fantastic again, winter for the annals. Today on Veliki Vrh quite a lot of visitors, Croats came by bus and slept at Kofce. Conditions good for both touring skiers and hikers. The wind calmed down so today it didn't blow too strongly. With car you can get early to Matizovec, then lower no.

Today excellent hike to Košuta summit with friend Matjaž. Start from end of asphalt on path to Matizelj, path ok, trodden all the way to summit, snow just right, didn't sink much, so crampons not needed, of course they were along. Weather excellent, views too, on descent met 5 ski tourers going to summit. Just before Kofce met good friend Benot with wife, of course beer too. Excellent tour. Recommend.

Then crampons to summit not needed. The path isn't icy at all.

No, not needed or at least on Sunday no need for them. Definitely should be in backpack, and ice axe too. Regards.

Has anyone been wandering around there in the last few days? Interested mainly if the slope above Kofce is very icy? LP A

After a long time found time again for our beautiful mountains. Since "better half" didn't maintain fitness over winter, chose Veliki vrh. Despite fairly early hour, we left car by road, far below Matizovcem. Path to Kofce passed quickly. From Kofce onwards lack of winter activity showed. Still reached summit in set time. Summit full of visitors. Knowing to give space to others, headed back to Kofce. At Kofce lots of people. Despite sunshine and nice weather after strengthening beer and friendly service headed to car. Had great time.

Our mountains - beautiful mountains. Of course true. Especially if weather nice too. Like today. And without crowds. Just before approaching summit, 40 soldiers descending (interesting sight), so I was up there quite alone (or with furry friend). Hot, so didn't stay long. Nice. Flower scents intoxicating. Conditions: in "valley" before summit - still some snow, which of course crossable without winter gear, otherwise path dry and undamaged. LP Heinz !
