Veliki vrh (Košuta)

On Sunday, August 1, I visited Veliki vrh. Weather excellent, visibility very good, as you could see all the way to the High and Low Tauern, Julian and Kamnik-Savinja Alps and to the hills of Inner Carniola. I started from Matizovec farm via Kofce pasture and onwards to Veliki vrh. For the ascent I spent approx. one hour and forty-five minutes, descent half an hour less. In the morning not many people, but when returning tons, especially at the hut.

This morning we climbed past Planina Korošica to Hajnževo sedlo and continued on the demanding and well-protected path to Veliki vrh on Košuta. The path start was steep in places, lots of water everywhere. Planina Korošica nicely arranged, early lots of visitors. Most climbed to Košutica where we continued later too. Strong wind at saddle. No crowd towards Veliki vrh. Nice weather, great views to Triglav and Snežnik. Path to Košutica unmarked but traceable. Difficult parts secured with loose cables. From Košutica continued to Ljubelj hut along border ridge. Path nice and well maintained. Long nice trip. LPnasmeh

Nice tour that's also close to my heart. That ladder is completely new at Rjava peč, because before it was quite slippery in the mud.

Today conquered two peaks, first Veliki Vrh, a bit later Veliko Kladivo.. Weather fantastic, warm, no wind, conditions excellent, snow firm, hard and frozen. On summit quite some people.

Matizovec - Hut below Kofce - Veliki vrh - Kofce gora. Snowy ridge from Kofce gora downwards is quite narrow. Gorgeous, warm day.nasmeh

What about the snow, trodden or sinking in?

I'll just ask under this topic. Has anyone been recently towards Kladivo and then down to Šija valley?

Has anyone driven from Jelendol towards Kofce in these days - is it too icy for the car? And then on foot to the pasture? According to the weather forecast, we need to take advantage of it for some family trip...

Hi, I also have a question about the road, namely to the Matizovec farm. Is the road dry to there or do you need to leave the car lower down? Tomorrow we plan to head to Great Peak... Thanks in advance for the answer & best regardsnasmeh

TincaPRR, the road to Matizovec is normally drivable and dry. But be there earlier, as you know, holiday and nice weather, so the easily and quickly accessible pasture Kofce below Great Peak, as well as the peak itself, can get terribly crowded...otherwise enjoy, we were there a couple days ago.

Now I can answer myself about the road to Mrzli studenec below Kofce - there's still a little snow and ice on the road, but high temps and cars have softened it so much you can drive without issues. Don't know about morning when it's still cold though.

Yesterday I decided with Bobi to visit the hut at Kofce and the wonderful weather and huge number of hikers convinced me to extend to V. peak. It was really a great day, sea of fog in the valley, strong thaw in high mountains. cool
For starting point I chose Jelendol. Otherwise I'd drive higher but couldn't (icy road). With 4x4 no problem!

Yesterday we were on Great Peak and specifically from Matizovca to Kofc the path is mostly icy and crampons are highly recommended. From Kofce past Križ, then at the junction turn towards Kladivo and along the ridge to Kofce peak. The path is obvious, need to cross considerable wind-blown, now wind-crust snow. There is a big slip risk. From the peak continue left under the ridge to Toplar. The path is mostly snowy, icy and muddy, so to Toplar cross snow patches though slightly slippery. From Toplar to VV the path is first still muddy, covered with ice or snow, the last 100 m lots of snow. The weather was wonderful, only from Toplar to the top the wind picked up. We descended the usual path to Kofce, from there shortcuts not the marked path due to ice to Matizovec. And faster down.

Maybe someone knows what the situation is now after a week of rain? How much snow is left?

Really, doesn't anyone know how to think with their head anymore? Precipitation stopped only yesterday, the whole week they have been talking about the snow line between 1000 and 1500 m, the weather service's snow conditions page probably the last concern
http://www.arso.gov.si/vreme/napovedi%20in%20podatki/snegraz.html

So, quite some new snow has fallen, but for March that's pretty logical, right?

As far as I saw in Kamnik Alps snow is around 1600m, higher up as much as I could see huge amounts of new snow. Avalanche danger in my opinion high.

@keber1: now, when the clouds cleared up, you can see that Cjanovci vrh is white. So snow fell at 1800m. Can't see Košute so better if someone tells current conditions mežikanje
