Yesterday I headed towards Stone Hunter through the Mrzle vode valley and over the Prašnik saddle. The Mrzle vode valley is one of the most beautiful alpine valleys, solitary, unjustly neglected and rarely visited in winter.

The annoying wind in the high mountains allowed me another nice little ascent. This time I go to the Prašnik saddle below Stone Hunter from the second most beautiful alpine valley Zajzere. I park at the Prati Ojcinger inn, calm, not too cold, freshly whitewashed, solitary and surprisingly scenic. Longer description at: www.turni-klub-gora.si

When I read Igor's description of the solitary and unjustly neglected valley, the desire to visit it immediately arose in me. David and I drove to Trbiž, turned towards Rajblje and after a couple of kilometers there's a sign for the village Riofreddo. Soon we reached the parking lot by the yellow chapel and from there it continues on skis or on foot of course. Yesterday there were only four cars parked in total. Then the continuation is very logical and unmistakable. When you reach the fork, you really find yourself in the embrace of the mountains and that part I liked the most. When you turn right, the path winds through the forest. When we arrived at the clearing below Lastovice, we turned back. The friendly couple from Škofja Loka, who were climbing more or less with us, did the same. In the morning it was -8 degrees, on the clearing you felt the pleasant power of the sun. No wind. A really nice day, discovery of new places and new peoplenasmeh.

After two days in the Karavanke, where there is snow only as a sample, it pulled me back to the pilgrimage path. At the parking lot below there was a warning that the path is icy, because it had snowed and the snow had compacted there was no slipping at all, but crampons wanted to build up, but I prevented that with precautions. Past Višarska planina it was really solitary today, at the "Lucova" chapel I turn left and along the packed track into Krnica with my hat on. There I hear some talking or rather "rattling". Luckily they turned left, I went directly under the entry "gully" and on foot with skis in hand to the top. I ring for luck, then carry the skis down to the saddle, because there is no snow on the top and I ski down the "gully" which is narrow at the bottom for the ski length (170 cm). I continue through Krnica and via my variant to the road leading to Zajzero, one could say, skiing on powder. Take the dogs back up and along the road to the mountain hut, where after a long time we again pleasantly chatted with Mr. Mešnik, without the concluding "short one" it didn't go this time either. The ski slope in Žabnica was almost empty, about 5 cm of new snow on the old base looked like skiing off-piste.

In Zajzeri there was almost 40 cm of new snow in the morning with a slight crust. My buddy and I headed to the road marked 616. We were overjoyed at the track of a "samohodka" as we quickly realized that even as pros we would struggle to break trail in such deep snow to the saddle. Still, at one point we left the comfy track and pulled a spur on "my variant" through the woods, since that would ease the skiing back. Higher we hit the road again, the track leads further and we follow it to Prašnik saddle. Sun, new snow reaching a good 60 cm at saddle height, what more could you want. From the saddle we turn to the marked path to Pellarini hut, but we pull the track only to the abandoned shack, then a bit higher to a sunny clearing with one of the best views on Viševa and Montaževa walls. We sat there a bit, then skied to the shack and further along the wooded ridge, but due to the flatness we barely make progress because the snow, which is already crusty in spots, is simply too much. So we turn to the east side, where the snow is dry and we ski perfectly to the road. After a few 100 m of road we turn down into the forest, where the snow was a real southern nightmare. Well, on the road and finishing on the XC track we were quite happy. Nice tour overall in a great setting. Where the sun shone today, there will surely be crust tomorrow. I recommend it, as the tour is safe in these conditions.
Anyway, regarding avalanche danger, something also here: http://www.grzs.si/?MenuID=1&NewsID=1048

No tracks from Prašnik saddle; from Višarje it is dangerous for avalanches, especially before entering Krnica at Klobuk and in Krnica itself.

This variant from Zajzera to Prašnik saddle must be nice already if "some" go up so often, we think. And today we two are going to check it out too. This time the only "tangible orientation" are Igor's descriptions here, but we'll manage, we say. To the start there is no problem, the XC track by which it starts is impossible to miss... then...zmeden Very soon a ski track branches off, and we don't know if it's the right one... And so as not to "wander" unnecessarily, we take the simplest and most reliable option – we call "Zlodej Info center" as they named it on the neighboring forum nasmeh. Igor is on the way to Sella Nevea during our call, and decides to change plans and join us. So we continue on that track, later we successfully find the beech with the blue mark and turn into the woods. The ascent on the good track is comfortable, soon we reach the road and then the saddle. It seems strange to us that Igor is not behind us yet. We really had quite a lead, but we were also walking slowly and were sure he would catch up with us... The view from the saddle is not exactly top-notch, and when we notice another very good track that obviously leads higher, and we are just deciding whether to go a bit further, the phone rings... Igor asks where we are... well, that was a good one, as it turns out in the end that he is already waiting for us a few hundred meters above the saddle eek (the expert of course did not go the last part of the path on the road like us, but took a shortcut that brought him up there higher than the saddle)... of course we hurry after him, the reunion after a few months is of course joyful, then we continue another 15 minutes or so to a nice sunny clearing with a wonderful view towards the Viševa group... Follows rest, chat, a little refreshment, a little martini drinking, the sun doesn't have much power, but luckily no wind either, while around Viš it's smoking, the wind was blowing so hard up there higher.... The skiing is nothing to praise much, but given that our touring-ski "staž" is quite short, we were gathering experience on how to ski mostly on "crust" and "bushwhack" mežikanje. But bottom line a very nicely spent day in extremely pleasant company.

After yesterday's windy skiing on Kanin and wonderful views, today we decide we need to go higher again and choose the long-planned Kamniti lovec. In the valley we gear up, one with board, the other with alpine skis and boots... yeah, yeah that's willpower, my shoulders still feel it, hehe. A bit before Višarje we leave the board and skis and head to Kamniti lovec, where we had the "women's" advantage again and made the trackvelik nasmeh. Weather sunny, warm except on the wind... views a real winter fairytale. Back on the ski slope, the day was really wonderfulnasmeh

Start in Žabnica, along the pilgrim path past Višarska planina and at the chapel left ahead to Kamniti Hunter summit. Path is bare, yes, but rare patches of new snow are no obstacle, caution recommended for slipping as snow is melting and rocks are wet. Yesterday I did a nice loop. Pilgrim path to the Stone Hunter, down the other side toward the Prašnik saddle. At the top some scared me saying the path is tough and you need full via ferrata gear, but it wasn't like that. Then on that trail to the junction for Višarje and back to the starting point but on the other side. To the top there were some visitors, even from Paris, back solitary and nice - really many pretty trees you meet. In the chapel they were preparing for a wedding and the floor was strewn with red and white primroses. Romantic!!! nasmeh
