Višarje and Kamniti Hunter

Print
jprim28. 10. 2019 20:43:31
Stone Hunter and Visarje have been planned for several years. In Saturday's gorgeous weather the wish comes true.
Sure, early rising and long drive followed, but one forgets it when stepping onto the top of Stone Hunter. Along the path my thoughts wandered to the late Igor Zlodej, as it was our last private talk about this path to Stone Hunter.
Crowded on Visarje, lots of kids from Austria.
Regards!

On Visarje also excellent conditions for walkers, to Stone Hunter without snowshoes probably not possible:

Pilgrimage path is incredibly bare in the initial part for this time of year, further on pure ice rink velik nasmeh. It doesn't let up even in the afternoon hours. Small icy patches to Visarje are more than welcome.

From Visarje to Stone Hunter full winter gear is necessary. Didn't need snowshoes. Feature of the tour was also distinct thawing and accordingly not the best conditions in the upper ascent part. Upper snow layer softened, below partly frozen slabs, partly windblown snow. Tracks iced over, so some trail breaking couldn't be avoided. Summit gully requires more caution. If it really snows properly this week, conditions could be completely different.

Pilgrimage path is dry for a good kilometer, then a beautiful slide.1
Suitable for everyone who set out without crampons :)2

The steep ascent to the upper cirque required full winter equipment7
Although it doesn't look steep the slope is considerable, follow the trampled path8
These two watched our trail-breaking for a while, then chose the nearer gully9
This is the right one, mix of concrete and rotten snow. Summit on the right, ice axe and crampons obligatory10

Already descending. The temperature was constantly an incredible 8°C.16
The weather is deteriorating, but the views remain.17
The snow was soft, heavy and there were hardly any skiers.18
Mountain pasture in summer, refreshment point in winter.19
We were loaded like two mules, but everything came in handy except the potatoes.20

That's how it's meant, it's the price of one-way gondola ticket to Visarje (since the price list is at the start of pilgrimage path, that's why "only down", but could be "only up" too). Many go up on foot and ride down, or vice versa.

Long in mind, finally we made Stone Hunter and Visarje. And even in wonderful sunny weather. 27 hikers, we split into two groups. The easier first one took gondola to Visarje, so plenty of time for sightseeing, walk and enjoying every step - why not this variant too? Second group walked the whole path to Visarje and on to Stone Hunter. Total 1,200m ascent and same descent. First 900m rise nicely, partly on cart track, partly forest path. From junction to Visarje, the path is wonderful, varied, full of unforgettable views. Partly soft path among larches, partly scree and final climbing part, well secured. And suddenly we conquered a new two-thousander, for a large part of our hikers first time, special experience. Views to western Julians really super. Saw Viš and Montaž. Other side Poldašnja špica, Visarje, Ojstrnik and Dobrač. Then our beauties Mangart and Jalovec....Great day succeeded.

Great. You enjoyed it nicely.
Which path to the top did you take? I myself didn't spot any climbing part there, just some small cables for safer steps.
Regards!

Pilgrims' path to Višarje is excellently cairned and secured, there's quite a bit of snow nasmeh. In the morning it's worth hurrying a bit with the departure due to crowds of hikers and mountaineers arriving with the first sun. Small crampons are recommended for easier progress.

Further to Stone Hunter the path is less cairned but still holds the walker well. Didn't need snowshoes, but had to use big crampons and ice axe for exposed sections. Snow there is firm, tracks poorly visible, steepness serious. Similar in summit section of path and approach couloir to top. Tracks drifted over in places.

On return snow was becoming wet, mainly due to higher air temperatures. Crampons gripped excellently thanks to long points and snow not softened deep. On pilgrims' path met incredible processions of people from tourists to hikers and mountaineers eek. Parking full of course.

In conclusion ... conditions excellent now, just need to be a bit earlier nasmeh.
We leave the car at the icy parking lot at the start of the pilgrimage path.1
There is surprisingly a lot of snow already in the lower part.2
Newer sign of the pilgrimage path. There are also quite a few new information boards.3
Our direction today … Cima del Cacciatore, or rather Kamniti lovec in our language.4
We walk in the shade for a long time. The sun catches us only above Višarska planina.5
Soon we turn left onto the cross path towards the ski slope.6
On the other side of the chapel there is the signpost for Kamniti lovec7
The game trail here is much less trodden than the pilgrims' one, but still good for walking8
Kamniti lovec. We walk to it all the time in shade and cool9
Up to here it went with small crampons, further on we put on the big ones10
The snow is hard and compact, the incline substantial11
We are already over the threshold. In the cirque below the summit ridge a cold wind chases us12
The tracks are drifted over, only old ski tracks hold. Elsewhere it goes up to the butt13
Passage towards the summit. In summer there are fixed ropes here, this time compacted snow with poor steps awaits us.14
Exit from the summit gully amid persistent shadows. As a reward we also get calm :)15
Group shot on Kamniti lovec, an excellent viewpoint far and wide.16
View towards Viš, Montaž and Naboj.17
View of Poldašnja špica and Krniška glava.18
View of the adjacent summit of the two Kamniti lovec peaks.19
After pleasant basking in the sun, it's time for descent.20
With ample caution we rework the gully, below are already crowds of hikers.21
Descending in the direction of ascent. Shade retreats from the sun only slowly.22
The snow is also changing due to heat. Top layer becomes soft, base still good.23
We're back at the excellently groomed ski area. Few people, probably ticket limit in effect.24
Here we take a shortcut. Thanks to crampons the slope poses no problem.25
Pilgrim path, widely trodden and excellently secured. Suitable for everyone.26
We conclude...27

Hello. If I start for the Stone Hunter in Ovčja vas and descend to Zajzera, how far is it then from the end of the path in Zajzera to the car in Ovčja vas? Are both paths marked? And I'd also like to ask, what should I watch out for...? I've already read here about the path, but I still can't picture it... Thanks for info.

About 3 km, less than an hour's walk, the marked path runs parallel to the road.

From Zajzera even if not marked, there's a road here. Don't forget the map! Happy trails nasmeh
