If I may ... It's always like that, some need more time, others less - Mihelič wrote in his Julian Alps guide (long ago) that the descent from Kanin to the bivouac takes 2 hours 15 min. That was some average (when the guide was written). But the essence of the difference in difficulty between Julia and this part of the High Rosojan path is probably really what Igor wrote: the part is unsecured - not even close to a ferrata. So on Julia I saw crowds of hikers going up and down, while to the bivouac usually only a few descend, and some I've seen turning back up and then caught them below on the path to the Gilberti hut (so they descended Julia). Actually, Janez, if anything, why not test, according to the old mountaineering rule, the (presumably harder and new for you) path in the direction from the bivouac up, where you can turn anytime or descend via Julia you know over the summit, and the exit is also a repeat of the descent over Prevala. Good luck!

merkur - I think that's the smartest suggestion. If it goes well, on the summit I'll choose the longer but less demanding variant over Prevala; if something gets stuck, I'll return by the ascent path. If all goes well, I could do this route in under 9 hours, so I could use the cable car up and down.

You can count 4 to 5 hours from Gilberti via Perava (Marussich bivouac) and Vrh Krnice to the Kanin summit, how much you spent for the return over Prevala you know. I wish you a pleasant tour when it comes!

Today from Neveja, past Gilberti hut, over notch to summit, and same way back to Neveja. Excellent snow conditions, skiing also very good.

Gilberti Hut - Bila peč Saddle - Kanin Glacier - Via Julija - H. Kanin - Long Meadows - Prestreljeniška Notch - Prevala - Gilberti. Depending on conditions, full gear is needed.

Igor - is winter gear needed for the path to Žrd?

Žrd is dry, on the approach from Gilberti Hut direction there are some snow patches in gullies, ice axe won't hurt.

Is the mulatiera from Bila peč saddle to Žrd dry? I have a plan for the weekend if the weather is OK.

I think I wrote clearly that on the access path (mulatiera) in gullies there is snow that is hard and packed, so ice axe is recommended for safe crossing.

The same applies to CAI 636 towards Prevala, CAI 637 towards the Robon saddle, and the unmarked trail under Lopo.

A bit off: I'm curious about this Kanin glacier. Everywhere there are data on the Triglav glacier and the glacier under Skuta, but the Kanin one is forgotten. Since the north side of the Kanin range still has lots of ice and snowfields, it seems more should be written about it?

I want to go to Kanin from Krnica, either via the Julia path; do I have any chances regarding the amount of snow, cornices and wall accesses? Thanks and LP, Marta.

Last weekend it was possible to enter the wall normally but a bit higher. A meter of rope will come in handy Via Julia

Does anyone know how the cable car to Gilberti hut runs, and maybe the price
|
|

|
| sla21. 08. 2014 09:05:19 |
I think it runs from 8:00 to 16:00. Return price is 10 or 12 EUR (maybe a EUR more)
