Persistent fog in central Slovenia took us to the Primorska region for the second day. There was plenty of sun here, but the weather still showed its winter teeth. It started already on the highway, where the thermometer showed a temperature swing from +7°C to -6°C in just a few kilometers. Unbelievable . We parked in Matavun by the main road, luckily right next to the mountain signs. Luckily, because there's also a sign about the impassability of the Reka gorge. That was part of the planned circular route and I had no choice but to redefine everything a bit differently. Accordingly, we headed to Vremščica via SPP1 past Divača airport, then a long way along the railway and later up the bare slopes to the ridge. It was blowing so hard there that it was tossing us around at times, despite the forecast of weak bora. That forecast didn't hold much, as they were even closing the Vipava highway during the day . On Vremščica, surprisingly, only a light breeze. We descended towards Dolnji Ležeči and later turned towards Famlje. There was also a warning about the closure of the Reka gorge, so the only logical continuation was across the only bridge nearby. That led us towards Škofije and later back to Matavun. The weather-wise very interesting loop was thus completed and followed only by the drive into the foggy grayness. More in the photo story … Coordinates of the starting point (Matavun): 45.6629731N, 13.9907336E

Bagi, too bad. I was in the Reka gorge (Famlje - Matavun) on Saturday and the path was completely normally passable. Except for one smaller log across the path right near Peptov mlin, there wasn't a single obstacle on the path. Honestly, I didn't see any warning (at least from the direction of Famlje village)(fortunately). It is true that on one section I climbed about 50m above the riverbed for approx. 700m length (sign "easier path").

Anže thanks for the info . Obviously this warning is one of those similar ones whose validity has expired. Not the first time and not the last.

Hello everyone! The warning about the closure of the Matavun - Vremščica path, which runs through the Reka river gorge, is current. The reason for the path closure is the unauthorized crossing over the railway above Famlje. In process is the rerouting of the path to a new route, which will no longer cross the double-track railway line Divača - Pivka at an unauthorized place. The path itself on the section Matavun - Famlje through the Reka river gorge is not closed and is normally passable. Also the entire route of the mentioned path is in good condition, but crossing the railway is not possible and thus a circular tour cannot be done.

But is the crossing actually physically blocked?

No, actually there is no sign prohibiting the level crossing over the railway there, nor any barrier. There are still quite a few such crossings on the Primorska tracks and the same applies to all ... in case of carelessness they are deadly dangerous. Even on digital maps, the mountain path still runs there, although they can be easily changed, or an impassability mark added (path condition in photo - January 2026). No point wasting words on printed versions. But the sign in Motovun is misleading and completely inappropriate for possible visitors to the Reka gorge. The mentioned railway crossing is in fact a good kilometer and a half away from the circular variant over this gorge. Poorly thought out by those responsible for placing warning signs.

The marked path Matavun - Vremščica, part of which runs through the Reka river gorge, starts in Matavun and ends at Vremščica. The path crosses the railway where there is no crossing and therefore crossing is prohibited and deadly dangerous. On the route of the mentioned marked path, however, there is no junction to any other marked path by which a circular path could be done. Of course, a circular path can be done along the road, or some path of course, if we find our way on the terrain. The signs about the closure of the mentioned path are standard and placed at both starting points of the path, and also on both poles, where we can then return to the starting point by road or the same path back where we started walking. Likewise, the signs about the path closure are placed completely correctly and according to the regulations of KPP PZS. Of course, despite the prohibition of walking on the closed path, the responsible PD cannot prevent anyone, but in any case it is protected in case of accident.

When planning hikes, it's good to also check maPZS for any possible path closures to avoid unpleasant surprises on the spot.
