Vrh Ljubeljščice (Triangel)

With Iztok we went today on skis via Zelenica to Triangle. The ski slope is groomed only partially in the middle section, because a large avalanche released from the slope of Begunjščica and left a huge amount of debris there, which groomers are now arranging. From the hut to the top of Triangle there's a nice track for walkers, so go boldly. P.S. But head to Ljubelj early, because on return it was already full of cars by late morning. LP Andrej

Today Franci and I went to Zelenica and then towards Suho ruševje, but we abandoned the plan because there were places with windblown or newly fallen snow up to 30 cm (or even more). Instead we went to the hut at the source of Završnica and then did a loop towards Šija saddle, admired Srednji vrh and back to Zelenica summit. From there we went up the road to Triangle summit. It was foggy in the morning at the top, poor visibility. Descent to Zelenica on fresh powder was really enjoyable, then down the nicely groomed ski slope to Ljubelj. LP Andrej

Tomorrow I'd go to Triangel from Ljubelj, wondering if there's any snow up there. Nice weekend!

Yesterday at 10 start at Ljubelj. I walked with snowshoes on my own track; it was really enjoyable. The snow that fell in the last days is completely dry, powder. Not for skiing, they carried skis on their backs to the valley. The sun welcomed me at the top.

Excellent touring descent. Zelenica ski slope not operating.

This ridge summit isn't really a ski touring run, since most of the time you're on the ski slope. But it's an excellent quick workout when you don't have enough time or it's too dangerous for avalanches in the mountains.

When conditions are good and safe, Suho rušje is paradise for ski touring.

Afternoon trip to "Triangel" or Zg. Plot, as I was informed, passed in slightly foggy weather while ski area managers groomed the slopes for tomorrow's skiing. Conditions for skiing very good, excellent recreational tour, especially for afternoon. In the upper part there was still some unskied powder today, but tomorrow definitely not anymore. No track for walkers to the top yet, but surely tomorrow there will be. Snow depth above the ski area visibly increasing, snow poorly bonded to old base, which Franci and I checked during ascent, additionally on descent by the forest. LP Andrej

You're lucky it's not you who got buried by the avalanche today. Unfortunately there are still too many people who think avalanche is a joke. Even here on hribi.net Sad... I have no words to express my disappointment over people's ignorance and stupidity.

Yesterday quite a few of us were at Zelenica and I didn't see any skier descending into the valley outside the ski area. I think most mountaineers or ski tourers are aware of the dangers lurking for all of us in the mountains. The fact that you check snowpack stability and depth I take only as good. In my opinion, neither here nor on other forums is there anyone who underestimates avalanche risk. We all know that avalanche possibility practically always exists, but it's also true that conditions change day by day, so one needs to be especially alert. LP Andrej

If anyone already knows exactly where this tragedy happened, please describe it.

The tragedy happened on the road (built years ago as a transport-rescue path), leading from the middle station of the cable car towards Zelenica, in the gully just before the chairlift crosses it. An avalanche released on the slope below the Spodnji Plot wall (Triangle) and took the border, who was walking up the road, into the beech forest below it.

Yesterday I was horrified by this news, since I also walk this path often in winter. Usually, in nice weather, this path (wide road, groomed snow) has lots of people, not mainly ski tourers on the ascent, but especially those for whom this path is just right half-day recreation, suitable also for families with small kids.

I think the responsible ski area owners will have to better secure the ski area along the entire route under Begunjščica in the future. Already in previous years the Austrian ski avalanche commission mentioned that Zelenica ski area is too exposed to avalanches and according to their criteria would probably need to be closed. In these areas it would be sensible, if nothing else, to mine avalanche debris on Triangle and Begunjščica when snow cover is high.

Artificial avalanche triggering on Zelenica started already in the first half of the 60s right after the opening of the lower chairlift section. The first triggerings were carried out with an 82 mm mortar. Due to the danger (bad ammo and risk of shots over Begunjščica ridge), after good experiences from abroad they started using a recoilless gun cal. 82 mm and the results were much better. In some cases also by mining snow cornices directly on the ridge. These activities were carried out by snow avalanche miners of GRS Tržič in cooperation with rescuers and cable car operators. Shooting was carried out under the auspices of the then TO (territorial defense), most of whose members were GRS Tržič members. After the 1977 accident, a Commission for Avalanches at Tržič municipality was established, which worked successfully for years. Law changes and transfer of responsibility to cable car operators in the late 90s led to the commission's abolition and the end of artificial avalanche triggering on Zelenica. You can read about it in A. Kralj's article in the GRS Tržič 70th anniversary proceedings titled Some snapshots from preventive work on Zelenica. http://www.grs-trzic.si/images/stories/Dokumenti/zbornik%20grs%20trzic%2070%20let.pdf p. 59

Peter, what is the possibility for re-establishing the commission? Is there any talk about re-establishing it or is there again a problem with legislation and responsibility? Regards Andrej

Despite multiple initiatives and demands from Tržič rescuers, the commission has not been re-established. Whether the reason is new legislation or something else, unfortunately I don't know.

Does anyone know which person sent the snowcat to groom that well-known path to all (or many of us), even though it was supposedly "closed".. They say the warning sign was only put up after the accident. The deceased snowboarder is supposedly, according to various official reporters giving "expert" statements, among irresponsible touring, freeride skiers who provoked the accident off the groomed slopes..etc, without avalanche transceiver and other necessary gear. What gear did the snowcat operator have who groomed it and thus enabled access to Zelenica in that direction and (especially!!), who of the responsible sent him either to his own death, or to sow it for others?? Will the family allow this case, which cannot be compared to the other (Vogel, Krvavec) this year's ones, to be swept under the rug so easily?

of course, others are always to blame for everything... which minister is responsible for these matters?

I was in that area about three times, twice in winter, always up with the chairlift, and also by helicopter. And I'm wondering why they haven't or if it would be possible to install avalanche protection barriers, like they have a lot abroad in such avalanche-prone places, say above roads, villages and such.
