Weather forecast for yesterday wasn't the most people-friendly, but the devil still won't let go, so in the morning we drive towards Vršič. Sheet-metal jams due to the Vitranc Cup in Kranjska Gora we luckily avoid just in time, but at the parking lot by the Russian Cross it's depressingly raining. With the flanks of the imagined supposedly untouched powder field below the Kriška wall we'll meet some other time, that's the decision. After consideration we leave the cars at Tonka hut, as far as it's barely possible to drive on the snowy road. In not too dense fog and occasional snowfall we go on skis along the road to Vršič, where there's about 80 cm of snow. Right at the saddle on the road plowed just days ago, now in snow, there's an old German van with summer tires covered with plastic. Through the windows I see it's full of boards and mountaineering gear. From the saddle (in front of Tičarica) onwards with poor visibility and occasional snowfall we push towards Nad Šitom heads down, mostly through sparse forest for precaution. Somewhere at 1836m we've had enough, we prepare skis when... from an indistinct couloir above us four guys ski out of the fog. We cheerfully greet each other, they ski on down the slope through snowflakes and fog. Hmm, no untouched white . Visibility is annoyingly poor, snowflakes, some wind and fog aren't ideal companions for ski touring. But plenty of powder field left for our predecessors, the skiing is indescribably beautiful and enjoyable. At the Vršič pass, which appears too soon, we decide that's not enough for today, we put on skins and head to Vršič (peak, 1738m). Snow on the path is windblown in places, icy, but the ascent isn't long, so we go. At the top we notice a snowboarder with snowshoes on his backpack, obviously coming from the mobile four-wheeled dwelling at the pass. For a while he looks at and photographs the north slope, unnoticed he descends on his board and disappears from sight. It doesn't interest us much, which is no wonder as just then the view opens down towards Poštarska hut, somewhere above Rušica even patches of blue sky appear, and the sun occasionally caresses this winter's modestly snow-covered walls. Signs of a weather turnaround of course spark a wave of enthusiasm, so we eagerly dive into the (this time) untouched powder field through the forest in the area of the old Vršič road. Before Tonka hut the snow is thoroughly crusted, which doesn't bother us at all. The day is saved, impressions unforgettable anyway. As always! At Tonka it's warm and friendly.
